Hello and welcome to my little game.

This is going to be a classic pokémon journey, with a group of young children setting out from Pallet town to follow their dreams. I will take on the brunt of the work (and authority) as game master, although players are welcome to take control of NPCs and aspects of the game world as it suits their needs. Everyone should be working together toward a steady pace and an interesting adventure, so I'm trusting all players to behave. If anyone happens to end up significantly ahead of everyone else, we'll work to make sure everyone catches up.

Setup:
Another year rolls around, and a new group of 13-year olds are gathering at professor Oak's laboratory in Pallet Town to receive their pokédexes and - for some - their very first pokémon. From there on, they will travel along the routes through the Kanto region, searching for ever stronger pokémon as they pursue their dreams. This is going to be a First Generation pokémon role play, and as such all pokémon beyond the first 151 will be completely absent. I'm not as picky with other elements of later games - if someone is rich and wants to have a pokégear, fine.

As this is a role play, we'll do away with many of the more game-like elements from the games and series. There is no artificial limit to how many pokémon you can carry at once (although trainers often agree to use a limited number of pokémon in a fight) or how many moves your pokémon can learn, and your inventory size is just however much you think your character could realistically carry, for example. Likewise, if you're in a life and death fight against Team Rocket similar types, there's nothing preventing you throwing your entire team and them at once.

On the other hand, to keep a light-hearted feel to the game, we are going to play up the more cartoony aspects of the setting. Getting hit by a Thunderbolt or Flamethrower isn't going to kill or seriously injure anyone, for example, although it may incapacitate. Serious injury and death should be quite rare, and I'm hoping darker themes in general will be kept to a minimum.

Ideally, I would like a party of unique - but believable - characters with strong personalities. To aid in this, I'm requiring everyone to pick a Trainer Class (see the sheet below), which will hopefully help your characterization. Be sure to show some restraint, though - I would like to avoid something like a party consisting of Red's son using his father's pikachu, a psychic prodigy of unheard of power, and a kid who taught her shiny magikarp to speak.

On combat and conflict resolution:
Combat is going to be handled narratively. You'll win a few, lose a few, depending on your approach and whatever's dramatically appropriate - in order to ensure that there's some risk, I'll be the ultimate arbiter of who wins what. The important part is that the fights are tense and interesting to read.

If there's ever an argument that can't be solved through in character discussion, such as who gets to capture a certain pokémon, or who gets to keep a cool item, we'll solve it in true Japanese fashion - rock, paper, scissors. You'll simply each send me a PM with a series of plays - say, ten - which will be compared to one another, in order, with the winner being the first play that isn't a tie.

You're welcome to ask questions and post interest with or without a filled out character sheet.

I'm quite interested, actually. I think I'll try to throw together a poor, street-urchin type character, but I'll have to think about what sort of class that would be.

Well, if you have no specific idea, there's always Youngster. The classes aren't supposed to be straight jackets or force people into narrow archetypes, only to nudge players toward creating strong characters with simple high concepts.

Is this RP character based or mostly relies on progression on how many Pokemon we catch and game mechanics? And what is the minimum number of paragraphs? Did you set this to advanced for a lot of long posts or mostly for 0 grammatical errors? @Maxwell
And also, may I ask, do we get more than 4 moves? It should be reasonable right? And I guess that having a lot of Pokemon with you requires a lot of food supplies if you want to make this realistic but idk.

Mechanical progression is definitely secondary, although I expect all our characters will want a solid team. There's no minimum number of paragraphs - while I enjoy a long, well-written post as much as the next guy, it's much more important that you post at a reasonable rate. I will confess, though, that I haven't been a regular poster on RPGuild since back in 2008-2009, so I don't really know how board culture works anymore, or what the various boards really imply. I put this in the Advanced section because I want a certain level of writing ability in my players - I want players who are capable of creating strong, interesting characters and make them come to life in their writing, and who have the communication and teamwork skills to create a story together without getting in each other's way.

As I wrote in the initial post, there's no artificial limit to the number of moves your pokémon can learn. This game will cleave closer to the conventions of the animé than to the games, and realism isn't terribly important to me. Perishable supplies we'll handle in any way that's convenient - little details like that are secondary to having a fun adventure.

I'm glad you asked - because that gives me a chance to elaborate - and the answer is yes, Aroma Lady is fine. As long as a class doesn't depend on any setting element that's been introduced in later media, such as Aura, Pokémon Ranger superpowers, being a member of a Team and so on, it should be fine.

Aroma Lady sounds like a great choice, actually.

I'd be interested in joining up! I usually don't do group RPs, but this is already making me super nostalgic. I'm torn between a (wannabe) ace trainer and an awkward bug catcher; I think I'll make the decision based off of the other characters in the RP.

I'm interested, as well! I was thinking either a Battle Girl or an Idol (that is, if they're allowed) would be fun to play. :D

I'm kinda interested in this. The only pokemon rp I did died pretty quick but it's an interesting world I never got to explore, since I never had the games when I was little. Wanna go as a bird keeper, I kinda like birds.

Ace trainers, bug catchers, battle girls, idols and bird keepers are all fine. I'll get to work on a proper thread, although I may not have time for it today.

The OOC Thread is open. I cut a corner or two, but I figured we could get started faster this way.

Heya!
If it's not too late, I'd like to join this as well?
I'll probably have a Bug Catcher because damn it I love my creepy crawly brethren and it's 100% the class I'd be if I were in the Pokémon world. Not that I write my characters to be like me at all, though it would be fun to make a slightly exaggerating self-insert that pokes fun/downright degrades me rather than glorify me...But eh. If not, a Fairy Tale Girl (or boy for that matter) would be fun, or perhaps a Psychic? Maybe even a young Gardener? You alright with any of those?

Yes, although there are no fairy type pokémon.

Alrighty, so dark, steel, and fairy don't exist (therefore magnemite is just electric, clefairy is normal, bite is a normal move, etc.), correct?
What of type tables? Is bug still super effective on poison and vice versa? Do we follow game rules or anime rules for psychic vs ghost types? And I'm guessing moves beyond gen 1 are not available either? Which puts some types at real disadvantages as there existed very few offensive bug, poison, dragon, and ghost moves (though considering there's only the gengar and dragonite lines for the last two...eh).
