For as long as historians could deduce, humanity and Pokémon have lived side by side. Whether it was in times of peace or times of war, Pokémon and humans always seemed to stay side by side through the most horrific of times. However, throughout the years the line between humanity and Pokémon has never blurred. However, that all changed 100 years ago when a mad scientist blurred the lines between the two. During an annual summit to the Pokémon Research Committee. A scientist by the name of Maximilian Strife approached the Pokémon research committee and explained his theory of imperfection. In that theory, he stated that the human form was imperfect since humanity is subjected to diseases, greed, lust, power, etc. To make humanity perfect, he theorized that humanity must be mixed with a being of pure perfection. In his eyes, Pokémon was the purest being of perfection on this planet. He explained that if they backed his project, he could combine human and Pokémon DNA to create a being of pure perfection.

The Pokémon research committee not only dismissed his theory but called him nothing but a whack job. They argued that the lines of Pokémon and humanity should never be blurred or in this case twisted and crossed with one another. In their eyes, his theory was not only unethical but a complete waste of time. He counteracted with the fact that a human Pokémon hybrid could do so much for both human and Pokémon research. The committee unanimously voted down his request and had him thrown out. Word quickly spread of his proposal and his fellow researchers exiled him from any and all of their further research facilities. It seemed this would be the end of his days as a Pokémon researcher. However, one organization saw potential in his work. The organization Helix had sent a spy to the annual summit to find a potential scientist to help with their cause. When they heard about Maximilian’s theory, they jumped at the chance to bring him to their headquarters.

After a night of heavy drinking, Maximilian found himself stumbling back to his home. His career seemed to be over and he did all he could from breaking down and simply ending it all. That night, while in his drunken stupor he was ambushed by hooded figures. He struggled against their grasp for a while before one of them used a blunt object to knock him out. Once he came too, he found himself inside a large padded cell. He sat up only to feel a sharp pain in the back of his head. The door to the cell opened and two hooded figures walked in and ushered him to follow them. Fearing for his life he did what he was told and followed the two into a large dining room where a well-dressed man sat at the table. He ushered Maximilian to sit and as he did, the two hooded figures bowed and left the room. The man at the table introduced himself as Benjamin Cross.

Benjamin explained that the goal of Helix was to create a powerful genetic weapon. They believed a much greater evil lurks beyond the stars. Helix believed that one day this threat will descend down and enslave both humanity and Pokémon. Because the threat has gone unnamed for centuries, Helix called these beings The Phantoms. Once Benjamin read the report for his spy, he knew Maximilian’s research would help in their enviable war with The Phantoms. He offered Maximilian not only funds for his research, but a lab and assistances to aid in his research. Maximilian was dumbfounded that someone was willing to fund his research. He agreed and immediately began working.

For his research to succeed, he needed both human and Pokémon test subjects. Helix and Maximilian knew the test subjects wouldn’t willingly agree to the tests. However, Maximilian knew that moral ethics sometimes have to be sacrificed for the greater good. Helix agreed and began kidnapping people and Pokémon to begin testing. However, the first tests didn’t go according to plan. So many of the humans and Pokémon died during testing, but Maximilian didn’t seem to notice. He would always say: “You have to break a few eggs to make an omelet.” It seemed the further his research went the madder Maximilian became. With every failure, he became more and more unstable. By the time Helix caught on to Maximilian dive into insanity. It was already too late.

One late night in the lab, Maximilian finally accomplished his goal. He found the right combination of Human and Pokémon DNA to create a living, breathing Hybrid he called a Gijinka. He rejoiced and quickly woke up everyone in the headquarters to show off his wonderful creation. Once everyone arrived, he showed off the Gijinka, which was a combination of a kidnaped 12-year-old girl and an Eevee. They marveled at the Gijinka, but what they didn’t know was Maximilian wasn’t done with just creating only a few Gijinkas.

Several months later, Helix members slammed against the barricaded door of the lab to stop Maximilian from going forth with his master plan. He had been secretly working on a machine that would warp and transform all of humanity into Gijinkas. The machine would give each human stands of random Pokémon DNA to make them a perfect being. When the door to the lab finally crashed open, it was too late. Maximilian activated his machine which sent large waves of purple miasma into the atmosphere. However, in his state of insanity, he overlooked key calculations and the miasma only changed a fraction of humanity into Gijinkas and because of missing calculations the machine exploded taking the whole headquarters with it. Since the headquarters was hidden inside a mountain, the explosion looked like the mountain erupted and shot out flames into the sky.

Those affected by the machine were changed into Gijinkas and outcast for society for being monsters. For years the Gijinkas lived in the forests away from human society. They feared the humans would attack them. However, that all changed with the predictions of Helix coming true. Shadow beasts seemed to appear from nowhere and attack both Humanity and Pokémon. It seemed the Phantoms were going to enslave humanity and Pokémon until the Gijinkas joined the fight. They might have feared humanity, but knew the Phantoms posed an even bigger threat. With Humans, Pokémon, and Gijinkas fighting the phantoms, they were able to push back the Phantoms and seemed to make them disappear from whence they came. After that, the Gijinkas that were outcast from human society were accepted back.

To thank the Gijinkas for their assistance in the war between the Phantoms, a festival was created. It was called the Phantasm Festival. There, every Gijinka was honored with medals and statues in their honor. The Festival was held in the very first city the Phantoms attacked: Vermillion City. After that, the festival would proceed as planned, but 50 years ago. It was announced that the festival would move from city to city each year in honor of every Gijinka around the world. This year, the Phantasm Festival finds itself once again in Vermillion City. The preparation for the festival is going as planned, but unbeknownst to everyone. An old foe has awakened from its long hibernation and will once again ravage the planet. However, that’s not the only threat that has crept from the ashes of defeat.
