An archaeological grad student and his dig professor.

Professor
(YOU) The professor is young for a senior archaeologist, married to her work. (She should be relatively young for her achievements - in her 20's. The sciences of history and archaeology are in her blood. Her parents were archaeologists, as were her grandparents. She specializes in Homo Sapiens, not merely the neolithic era. She may go back as far as Homo Antecessor (ca 800-1200ka).

Transitional dig sites are her specialty. Transitional digs are ones where there were elements of two different species of Homo sapiens. This is what she does her PhD level work on. This is what she hopes to get a Nobel Prize in someday.

Edit: And alternative might be the daughter or granddaughter of a professor who accompanies him on digs. But she ought to have some skill that is useful to them.

James Darwin
(ME) Her new grad student, James Darwin, is supposed to be very bright. She hired him partly for the fact that he was both knowledgeable and healthy. Currently she has been working some very rugged environments and she doesn’t need anyone to babysit. He was also fluent in several of the languages of the region her latest digs were in. He has also been to a few possible transitional digs where there were elements of two different species of Homo sapiens.

Now our grad student harbors a secret. He has been around since long before recorded history. He has no idea how long. For him those days are remembered much as a normal human remembers their early childhood. He didn’t make it a point to go around witnessing the great events of history. But he has seen a few. Predictably most are of the sort that were announced well in advance - such as the placing of the Gold Spike that connected the east and west parts of North America by rail. He saw Jesse Owens take the gold at the Olympics but only by luck.

The truth is that James is researching his own past, trying to trace his own origins. He is also not quite human.

Current Dig
The current dig is tracing the migration of Homo Erectus into Europe. James Darwin suspects he was a part of this migration out of Africa, or perhaps led it by thousands of years.

Plot
Not fully developed yet. This will depend a bit on your character. Largely it is a romance with my character drawn to yours, partly out of a sense of humor, but largely out of a matter of self-discovery.

Note: I did have 18+ tagged. But really that is not the emphasis I am looking for. The digs are also sponsored by a university or research grants or museum type system. Part of the time can be spent in the wilderness at a dig. Part can be back "home."
