Mariska’s mother took her and her twin, Arjan, to America, following a job offer. Mariska was two at the time; her father stayed behind with the intention of joining them at a later date. Less than a year later, the virus emerged, spreading in to Europe quicker than the Americas.
Mariska and her family found themselves in the settlement of Shawnee Hills, where Elke raised the twins in as much safety as she could, for twenty-three years. Unfortunately, Elke got sick; Mariska did as much research as she could and was led to believe that there was a medical outpost beyond the walls of Shawnee Hills that could aid her mother. Mariska made plans to undertake the treacherous journey out but was discovered by Arjan. Mariska begged him not to follow her or tell their mother to which he agreed, but convinced Mariska to at least have one final good night’s sleep before leaving. When Mariska awoke, she found a note from Arjan saying that he had gone in her stead; having to look after Elke, Mariska could not follow.
Nearly three months later, Elke has succumbed to her illness and still Arjan is no where to be seen. Mariska makes the decision to travel outside of Shawnee Hills to find him.
Arjan van der Hout - Twin Brother - younger twin and best friend, recently gone missing beyond the city walls.
Elke van der Hout - Mother - fell sick, prompting Arjan to leave and find a cure. His recent passing inciting Mariska to search for Arjan.
Bram van der Hout - Father - unknown to Mariska; he stayed behind in the Netherlands when Elke took the children to America. After the virus took hold, the family lost contact with him.

Mariska never knew life before the virus, but lusts for a world where freedom is the norm. She is fascinated by any information she can find of the world from ‘before’. Mariska has no memories of Bram, so she does not mourn him, but has mourned the idea of a father. She is fiercely protective of her younger brother, and his leaving (coupled with her mother’s death) has had a profound effect on her, making her more prone to risk taking than she was before.

Mariska’s Dutch is very rusty, given then she has rarely had need to use it. However, Elke wanted both her children to know and respect their heritage, so she taught them this (now likely dead and defunct) language.

Humanoid, but not human. A face that lies somewhere between a wolf and a lizard, eyes and sclera pitch black (but if you dare to get close enough, you will see that they colours of the eyes shifts and rolls like storm clouds above the sea). Huge, sharp teeth, a tongue that should be to long for the maw, yet somehow still fits when not lolling out in hunger; when the mouth is opened, it appears like Azgamoth's insides are aflame, the fiery glow flickering out between teeth. Four horns, stained red with blood, curve towards the sky like a macabre mockery of a crown. Canid ears, pointed, lying at right angles from the skull. Heavy, muscular frame. Rough, leathery skin, the colour of ash. The chest appears to be open, skin torn and exposing ribs and muscles along with the pulsating glow of internal fires (if you still dared after closing in once to do so again, you'd swear you could see two hearts beating behind the bared ribcage). Each arm ends in three fingered hands tipped with vicious looking claws, matched by the claws on the huge, paw like feet. Four tattered stumps of what might have once been impressive, feathery wings are situated on the back, either side of exposed, spiny back bone. The spines lead down to a hefty tail. Nathan was in love with a woman; she did not reciprocate. Nathan respected her wishes and moved away in an attempt to move on and forget, but he did not. Azgamoth, then 'Kara', found Nathan already in a dissent into his own personal hell. Azgamoth surreptitiously encouraged this, before convincing Nathan of a joing suicide. Azgamoth provided the pills, Nathan the booze. As Nathan slipped away, Azgamoth siezed the chance in the final few moments before death to jump ship. Kara's body died that day, as did Nathan's soul. Azgamoth lived on.
Merrek wasn't born in to slavery. He was the only child born to Garret and Luella Eilynbras, freemen of the city. Merrek knows little of his mother as she 'disappeared' before he was two; Merrek never thought to ask his father if Luella did a vanishing act on them, or if it was a euphemism for death. Garret worked as a locksmith, working hard to provide for his son; he was a good man who adored Merrek and wanted to ensure he had a good, free future ahead of him. As Merrek gre, he would occasionally got with his father and help him work to increase their income. Unfortunately, when Merrek was ten, Garret succumbed to an illness; or so Merrek thought at the time. Due to his work as a locksmith, Garret often found himself involved in petty crime. One day he refused to work on a bigger case as he dare not risk getting caught for fear of what might happen to Merrek; by way of teaching Garret a lesson, he was jumped in the streets. Garret was able to make it home to Merrek, where they spent a few hours together before the former died of internal injuries. With the death of his father and no other known family, a 'kindly' neighbour took him in. Unfrotunately, the neighbour had no real interest in raising or caring for Merrek, but instead saw it as an opportunity to make coin by selling him in to slavery. It was only a few months before the neighbour found a suitable buyer with a suitable price; a brothel owner who knew the value of young boys. Being gay in the city was not something to be openly spoken about, so androgynous boys, dressed as girls, made the perfect 'clients' for those with less than savoury tastes. Merrek had been with his new master for three years when Arrel, a boy of eight, was 'recruited' after his mother sold him to pay for opioids. For whatever reason, Merrek and Arrel formed a fast friendship, with the former looking out for and protecting the other where ever he could. Arrel soon began to refer to themselves solely as their female name (all the male prostitutes would use a feminine name in line with how they dressed and represented themselves, regardless of how starkly obvious their true sex was), Magdalena, or 'Lena' for short. During his time, Merrek developed a fondess for sneaking out and stealing alcohol from local pubs and taverns. Sometimes he got caught, and a swift beating would follow. However, it was only in these scuffles that Merrek felt he had any control over his life and it was not long before he would actively seek them out, gaining a reputation for being a brawler. During all this time, Merrek remained loyal and watchful of Lena. There was one regular client to the brothel, a Master Syldren, who specialised in the training and trading of slaves who worked on farms, who had rather particular tastes when it came to the bedroom. Syldren was a sadist, who took great pleasure in beating the whores he paid to be with. Merrek and Syldren came to an agreement that Merrek would take any amount of beating without resistance, if Syldren kept away from the others (in particular Lena). It was Syldren who broke Merrek's nose, leaving it permenantly crooked since. When Merrek was twenty-two he was walking through the halls to his next 'client' when he heard Lena crying in pain. Merrek went to investigate and found Syldren with Lena, her shoulder dislocated and massive welts to her body. Merrek saw read and kinda just lost his shit at Syldren; attacking the man and beating him half to death before being pulled off him kicking and screaming and covered in blood. For this, Merrek was quickly sold to the gladiatorial arena; it wasn't intended to be a new career, but a death sentence. Masters unhappy with their slaves, rather than killing them outright, would make a small profit by selling them to the arena as 'bait'; the humans that were 'first blood' in the fights, who had no skill and existed simply to be an opening act of violence and death to whip up the grounds. Merrek was not meant to survive, but he had been fighting for years in the back alleys, and now it was fight or die. Merrek miraculously survived his first baiting, then his second, then his third. It quickly became apparent that this man was worth keeping around. It didn't take long for a buyer to come around, willing to train Merrek and have him fight in the arena in earnest, as a gladiator. Merrek's innate skill and charm with the crowds quickly won him a following and within a few years he found himself a fan favourite, and a prize item in any collection. Merrek was finally sold to Master Viseryn, who collected valuable and unusual gladiators, seeing just how much further potential this man had. Merrek isn't a born gladiator; he has not had the years of weapons training that many others have had. But he fights dirty, he fights hard and he will fight to never have to return to where he came from.
Garret Eilynbras - Father - Locksmith, deceased. Loved Merrek very much and did everything in his power to protect him and bring him up well.
Magdalena 'Lena' Milisendis - Best Friend, Ex 'Colleague' - Lena is a whore who Merrek befriended; protecting Lena is how Merrek found himself sold into the arena. Merrek loves Lena and she him, but it is entirely platonic (even if they have fucked on occasion). Lena was moved to a different brothel after the incident between Merrek and Syldren to protect her (the Madame did look out for her girls).
Master Syldren - Ex Client - Frequent visitor with sadistic tendancies. Cause of Merrek's broken nose. Merrek isn't actually sure what happened to Syldren after the beating; he suspects he is still alive, but the attack was vicious enough to have leave lifelong injuries.
Master Viseryn - Current Master - Merrek doesn't trust any of the Masters, but as they go Viseryn seems candid enough (at least to his gladiators; Merrek always questions what the Masters do behind closed doors). Merrek is currently one of Viseryn's two favourite fighters.

Looking in the Mirror ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Merrek stands at 5’8” making him far from the most imposing of fighters in the arena, with the build of a blacksmith than that of the many hulking brutes he contends with. Merrek has dark, umber hair, that he keeps cropped short at the sides and to his shoulders in a strip down the middle; when fighting he wears the longer hair tied in a ponytail, but when not it is often left loose. Merrek prefers to wear his hair this way (along with the stubble across his jaw) in an effort to detract from his once boyish features that made him so popular in his previous role. Merrek’s eyes are a dark, stormy grey and more expressive than he would like. Merrek’s nose has clearly been broken at some point and not correctly set, making it a little crooked; Merrek likes to say it was from an early fight, but in reality in was an unsolicited and unwelcome ‘request’ from a previous client. Merrek also has a fine, pale line crossing from the centre of his forehead, across his left eye and finishing on his cheek bone; this scar, Merrek is happy to say, was from the arena.
Name Those Demons ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Merrek does remarkably well at pretending he is less broken than he is, partly because he long since gave up giving a damn about his own life. Merrek might be alive, but he knows his life is owned by others, paid in for in gold and blood. He hates the fact he is a slave, but he has resigned himself to his fates; as far as Merrek is concerned, fighting for his life day in and day out, is still an improvement to where he came from.
Merrek is prone to violence, as would be expected of anyone in his position, but Lena always told him, he was not violent because he was a gladiator, he was a gladiator because he was violent. Merrek begrudgingly agrees with this, though he would never admit it.
Merrek is particularly touchy about his past. He would rather be remembered as the fan favourite fighter who died choking on his own blood than the whore in the back alley. Not much is able to get under Merrek's skin, but his history is one of them. The other is Lena; he loves her intensely (though platonically) and would die to protect her.

Cosmin does not recall a lot about his life since the whole 'dying' incident. He hasn't forgotten everything, but he is fuzzy on most of it. Hell, he doesn't even know how he died, but if the folklore is to believed he either led a life of sin (entirely plausible) or suffered a violent end. Perhaps it is better that he does not remember much.
Cosmin does remember pulling himself for the grave twelve years ago. It was a lot of hard work. He was pretty confused about the whole situation, but was fortunate enough to run into another supernatural being (a werewolf, funnily enough; Savina) before the hunger pangs set in and he found himself tearing people apart for food. Savina and Cosmin became good friends, with the former taking the later in and guiding him through the hidden underworld that he had previously been unaware of. Eventually the two formed a romantic bond, and lived this way for five years.
Unfortunately, due to someone (them? A friend? Cosmin still does not know) tipping off the location of Savina and other members of her pack to the local werewolf hunters. Cosmin returned to their home to find Savina had simply vanished. Cosmin never saw her again, but was made painfully aware of just how secretive the supernatural needed to keep their existence; although most of them hugely overpowered a single, or even a small group, of humans, it did not mean that they were bulletproof.
In the following year, Cosmin met Sorcha, an aos sith, when acquiring blood from a local hospital. They would often talk when Cosmin arrived and it was not long before Sorcha was tagging along with the strigoi, regardless of his wishes. Sorcha imposed herself into Cosmin's life. Sorcha had not been in the human world for very long, having only recently found how to pass over from the Seelie court. Sorcha enjoyed the human world so much, she found herself running away from home; she should not be here and the aos sith have been trying to find and return her for years. In order to maintain a link with the human world, Sorcha must partake of human flesh every six months; the rest of the year she is able to eat mortal food. Cosmin and Sorcha have made it a habit of 'celebrating' her biannual blood fest, as they call it.
As well as needing to hide from mortals so as to keep themselves safe, supernaturals need to avoid the obsessive humans who take a shine to the realms of the supernatural. Cosmin found this out the hard way after developing what he believed to be a platonic (and not particularly close) relationship with a human, Lexi, who was already aware of supernaturals (they were introduced through a friend of a friend at some gathering). Cosmin had been apart from the human world for so long, he thought the insight into it again would be both interesting and healthy. Unfortuantely, Lexi took an extended interest in Cosmin, particularly after she discovered that he was a 'vampire'. Lexi then persued Cosmin in an attempt to become a vampire herself; in short, Cosmin quickly found himself being stalked. It was a hugely unpleasant situation, forcing Cosmin to move to a different part of the city to try and break ties with Lexi. Cosmin took the first place he could find; a flat share with another mortal. This time Cosmin was determined to keep the supernatural things under wraps.
Savina - Girlfriend, deceased (?), Fellow Supernatural - Cosmin still loves Savina, but he has since moved on from her apparent death. Even though the attack was on werewolves (and thus, Cosmin was never in harms way) he has some survivor's guilt over her disappearance.
Sorcha Ruane - Best Friend, Fellow Supernatural - Cosmin and Sorcha have been close friends for seven years. Sorcha helps keep Cosmin fed in ways less brutal than how he might feed alone. There relationship is full of dumb pranks and teasing, with Sorcha usually coming out on top at the end of their hijinks.
Lexi Hall - Stalker, Mortal - A human who was already a part of the supernatural scene when Cosmin befriended her; Cosmin is not entirely sure who introduced Lexi to supernaturals in general or to him, but she was a 'friend of a friend' who he slowly got to know. Over the course of their friendship, Lexi developed an unhealthy attachment to Cosmin's vampirism and desperately wanted to be turned, despite Cosmin repeatedly refusing. Things got really weird and Cosmin basically did a runner.

Not much troubles Cosmin; for the most part he just wants to live a normal life, as normal as it can be when you're an undead being that sups on human flesh and blood. Cosmin is not traumatised by his existence, nor is he hugely curious to find out more about his past (who he was before he died or even how he died). However, Cosmin is apprehensive around mortal humans due to their potential to persecute supernatural beings or to venerate them in bizarre and creepy ways (Cosmin has no desire for another stalker), so he keeps his unlife a secret as best as possible, while still trying to enjoy it.
Cosmin also detests the word 'vampire', for although he is very similar (and even arguably a type of vampire himself), he hates the way that modern media has portrayed them. It means people (supernatural or otherwise) have hugely incorrect assumptions about him. He does not sparkle even if Sorcha chucks glitter on him from time to time.

Garlic does not repel Cosmin or have any effect other than, quite frankly, he thinks it stinks.
Sunlight does not harm Cosmin; however, he is weaker during daylight hours.
Strigoi only need to sleep in their own graves (or at least its soil) for the first seven years. After that, they need only sleep in a graveyard/cemetery once a month. Cosmin has no idea what will happen if he doesn't sleep in a graveyard, but sleep in one he does.

His hair is a deep, navy colour; August's great grandfather had employed the services of a world reknowned doctor who specialised in working with human DNA, to alter the natural hair colour of his and his descendants. It has since become a recognised sign of royalty in Anjou. His eyes are the colour of heather; a colour that is a reminder of nature, at odds with his kingdom's steel and iron technology. August is tall, standing over six foot, and has a muscular build; as well as being prince, he fought on the battlefields, so he is both strong and fit. His body is marred with scars from the war, but most of these are hidden when clothed. He has sharp and regal features. August's right arm was lost during the war and has been replaced with a high quality prosthetic; although it looks and functions much like an arm, it is entirely made of a dark grey metal.
Name Those Demons ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
August has PTSD from his time in the army in the long lived war against the elves. Despite the Kingdom of Anjou now being at a time of peace, August cannot help his feelings of strong dislike (even hatred) for the elves who were so recently his enemies. Perhaps even more difficult for August, is adjusting to a life of a civillian after so many years of being a soldier, having grown up in times of war. August is also self conscious of his prosthetic arm around all but his army comrades, so will almost always conceal it with long sleeves and gloves during public appearances.
To a lesser extent that the horrors of war, August is plagued by his status as crown prince. August feels himself equal around his soldier friends and does not feel that he has to fill the political role of 'prince'. Although August is well versed in diplomacy and plays his political role with seemingly effortless grace, August resents the fact that for the most part he is is not allowed to be his true self, always having to act his role prince.
Born Prince Amis Martel, Rohesia was the third child (and only daughter) to the ruling family of the Kingdom of Sedathe. Unlike her brothers, Rohesia was not raised with the expectations that she, one day, might take over the Kingdom. She was not taught the politics or the ways of war as her brothers were; instead, she was doted upon, loved as a child should be. Her only role in the royal courts was, should the need ever arise, to be a politcal pawn by marriage; but as the third child, with little claim to the throne, her brothers made for far more enticing betrothrals.
Rohesia knew from a young age that she was 'different'; she envied the beautifully dresses worn by the Ladies in the courts, she envied the way they walked and the secrets they spoke of behind glittering fans. Rohesia never felt at place when she stood by her brothers, dressed in fine armour, the very depiction of masculine power. Her parents always put this peculiarity, this unsual gentleness and distate for the masculine, down to her living a much more secluded life than her brothers.
Wilmot Babbin - Nanny - She has been with Rohesia since birth; Wilmot has accepted the princess for who she is (both pre and post curse) for as long as she has known. Wilmot fought the King and Queen to remain with Rohesia after her exile.
The Dark Fae Danumna - Enemy of the Martel Monarchy - Danumna tricked Rohesia in to being cursed as a way of getting back at the royal family.

Rohesia is cursed to look like a beast; although her new form is not human it is female (leading to internal conflict). Her front paws resemble human hands, with opposable thumbs but also long claws; her back paws are more feline. Although her body is large, it is lithe and limber, giving the impression of a destructive shadow. Rohesia's tail is not covered with fur, but is instead covered in an armour plating and tipped with a vicious looking stinger (much like a scorpion). Rohesia has three eyes, each a different colour; one amythyst, one the colour of flames and the other the colour of the ocean. She has four ears, the shape of pointed ovals, that sit either side of two, curling horns like that of a ram.

Rohesia suffers body dysmorphia about her human form. Unfortunately, she also suffers huge amounts of transphobia from those around her. Rohesia's parents hid her away after she was cursed and, although they claim to love her, they wish for their 'son' back, believing her need for femininity to be a product of the curse (or of a different curse). Rohesia's parents do not believe that they have a daughter.

Ryhe is an alien species known as Valdrin, which are humanoid aliens. Their skin is on the blue spectrum and generally have pale coloured hair. Their eyes are a single colour (sclera, iris and pupil), usually dark. They have prehensile tails, which they use for climbing; originally they would use them to help with climbing/balancing in trees, but now they use them for traversing their maze-like cities and towns, which are built in ‘layers’ (like an entire tree-house city). They have long pointed ears and small, dark horns. Their teeth are sharp due to being primarily carnivorous (they are like dogs in that they are situational omnivores). Tattoos and piercings are common. They are a little shorter than humans, with the average height being 5’6” for males and female alike.
Ryhe barely grazes 5’4”, an unremarkable height for her species. Her skin is on the lilac end of blue, her hair a blue so pale it appears silver. Her hair has been cut short, so it rests at her chin. Her eyes are a deep violet. She has indigo coloured markings up both arms, legs and her tail and an ancient rune tattooed on her forehead (ending on the bridge of her nose). Her horns are a similar shade to her eyes.

They are not hugely technologically advanced (think industrial revolution, with some high sci-fi concepts) due to possessing psychic abilities; these are usually minor powers, such as cloaking or being able to make their voice travel. Valdrin with strong/advanced powers are regarded with suspicion as the only way to increase these psychic abilities is through ‘The Greatest Sin’. Valdrin commonly live longer than humans, with the average lifespan being 100 years. Valdrin rarely, if ever, leave their home planet because they see no reason to mingle with other species.
