The Foundation maintains a vast database of information regarding anomalies world wide. The primary Foundation database contains summaries of such anomalies and emergency procedures for their maintenance, containment, and/or termination in the event of a threat to human life and/or national security. Anomalies exist in many forms, some more perceivable then others. These anomalies are either contained at one of the Foundation's myriad of Secure Facilities or contained on-site if relocation is deemed unfeasible.
To keep track of anomalies and the procedures used to handle them, the Foundation database uses a categorization system, allowing for quick access to vital information in case of emergency events. Designated as "Specimen" the anomalies are categorized by their manifestation "type" and threat level "class." Once categorized, the anomalies are given a file designation and identification number.
Anomalies have been divided into three observable forms.
Object - Specimens of the 'Object' type tend to be inanimate and without sentience or observable life in any form or fashion.
Entity - Specimens of the 'Entity' type display some form consciousness and/or qualities of biological physiology.
Phenomenon - The 'Phenomenon' specimen type refers to any location, event, or free-standing anomaly.
Once the threat level of a specimen has been assessed, it will be given one of four classifications.
Beta - Beta class specimen may be effectively and reliably contained with relatively minimal effort. This does not indicate that the containment procedures are unnecessary, as many Beta specimen can be quite dangerous if handled recklessly or in the right context. The primary distinction that defines a Beta specimen is that it poses no threat to human life and well being what so ever when appropriate procedures are in effect.
Alpha - When a specimen displays an unpredictable nature or qualities beyond our scientific knowledge, it is classified as Alpha. Specimen of this class generally require more diligence to keep contained than Beta specimen and tend to be dangerous toward human life if appropriate procedures are not in place.
Omega - The classification 'Omega' is assigned to specimen that display an active, immediate threat toward public safety and/or a vigorous hostility toward human life. These specimen are capable of causing significant destruction and fatalities if not properly contained. Protocols must be extensive and followed precisely to prevent a breach of containment.
Omni - The 'Omni' classification is only given to specimens that are not only a confirmed threat to human life, but also have the potential for the devastation and destruction of the human species and/or space time in the event of a breach of containment. Omni specimens must be neutralized or terminated as soon as possible if possible. If destruction of the specimen continues to be unfeasible due to apparent invulnerability or similar circumstance, a decisive method of containment must be devised and put into place, no matter the cost to Foundation or earthly resources..
