He isn't really enlightened. Just sort of. To the point he can pop around and spread words of nonsense and wisdom. It wouldn't dramatically steer the direction of the story. :) I put his race as an enlightened being more because that is what he considers himself and because he is unlikely to fit into any category as he is technically alien.
Why is it unbalanced? Maybe hundreds was a high estimation, but he moves around very quickly in battle so he would use lots of portals.
He has no enhanced physique, so he wouldn't be taking on armies or anything.
His ability to move between dimensions is rooted in his character because he is a nomad from a magical world. He is on Earth
to help protect humanity, but that means helping it help itself. Rather than opening pan dimensional portals for everyone which would affect the storyline negatively, his purpose is to support other characters, to guide.. blah dee blah.

I hope that helped.

I read the first book. It must have been three years ago or so ago, but I can't remember much of it.
So the city (will this city be named?) is functional, however still in partly in ruins. Cool.

Light sea green?

Question: you said the city is in ruins or crumbling or whatever. Is it still functional? Are trains still running, people going to their jobs, driving on the motorways, shopping?

Name: Bewitcher
Real Name: Mikkel Abel
Age: 27
Position: Head of Recruitment
Occupation (If Any):

Appearance:

Personality Traits: Mikkel is a calm and collected figure on the surface. He is the type of person who people immediately understand will listen to what they have to say and seriously consider it. He gives out an aura of a person who can be depended on at all costs. However beneath this, Mikkel has a more manipulative streak, and is constantly analysing those around him and thinking what buttons he could push to elicit a desired response. He sees people as puzzles which can be cracked.

Abilities: Emotional manipulation and persuasiveness. Emotional manipulation allows Mikkel to feel the emotions of those around him as the subjects feel them - after many years this very taxing ability has been brought under his control, and he feels emotions as his sixth sense. He is able to psychically change the emotions of his subjects, either altering their emotions individually or blanketing an area under an emotion e.g rage, love, lust.
Persuasiveness is a manifestation of his power of emotional manipulation: it allows for more specific control to be carried out. Through spoken words, Mikkel is able to easily persuade others to carry out his wishes. However this ability isn't as powerful, as it depends on his subjects being susceptible to what he has to say. For instance, a hardened military general is more difficult to persuade to hand over a password than his secretary who has suddenly found herself in love with Mikkel. Conversely, persuasiveness can be build up, and within an hour Mikkel can typically convince most people to do anything if given enough time to chat.

Skills: Skilled with firearms, emotionally durable.

Biography: Mikkel had an idyllic childhood, at least for a little while. His powers of empathy manifested as soon as he was born, and so he was bombarded with the emotions of others since he was a newborn. When he was home, Mikkel cried and screamed until his throat was raw and bloody - it was difficult for a child to be exposed to the emotions of his stressed, overworked father and his mother who would be beaten by him several times a month. By the time Mikkel was a toddler, the household had changed entirely: a blanket of calmness and childish happiness had covered his home, and his family had become the picture of happiness. Using his ability on his family for years did have drawbacks: his parents became strangely addicted to their son's presence, and ran home from work every day to be near him. When he reached elementary school, Mikkel's persuasiveness and emotional manipulation made him worshipped and adored by his classmates. Those he did not like, Mikkel simply persuaded the teacher to punish them.

But somehow, someone noticed. It might have been one of the neighbours who found themselves affected by Mikkel's powers, it could have been a shop clerk, or one of his classmates parents. But one night Mikkel was stolen away in a black van and the house was torched. Neither parent survived. The year was 2006, and the war had only just begun. Mikkel was barely even a teenager, but it made no difference to his captors. For years he was locked away in a secret facility and his mouth was clamped shut so he couldn't persuade anyone to let him leave. He was forced to perform in twisted experiments and participate in life or death scenarios, but most of the time he was locked away, confined to his four walls and blank white room.

In 2011, Mikkel was set free by the mutant society. The facility he was imprisoned in was overwhelmed and he was taken to the Pit, where he spent the next year recovering physically and mentally. He was so grateful to his fellow mutants that he vowed never to use his abilities against them. For the years following, Mikkel became actively involved in furthering his education after his years locked away in the cell, learning from the emotional strength of his fellow mutants, and practising his combat in the simulation room until he was allowed to go on missions. After a few more years as an agent, and following a bloody beginning to the war, Mikkel was promoted to the Head of Recruitment and became responsible for all possible and new recruits amongst other responsibilities. Despite this, Mikkel refuses to stay in the Pit whilst his fellow mutants are fighting, and regularly embarks on missions wherever his talents are useful.

Fantastic. Thanks for the interest - I'll wait for more people to respond. If anyone has any ideas for the civilisation of Elpis and its inhabitants or plot ideas, feel free to contribute. Any questions, ask!
The year is 2072, and Earth is choking with ash and radioactive fumes. The end of the world has finally arrived. Now it is clear - all of the wars of the previous centuries have been leading to this war, the true Last War. After the second world war, we had believed that peace would return to the world. But humanity's thirst for war is not so easily satiated - in the following decades, governments and established entities throughout America and Europe would resume their mission for control over the resources of foreign lands. Tensions have risen and fallen throughout these decades, but largely the West has remained in control. However economic forces at work beyond the West's control ensured that power would shift, and new superpowers would emerge in the world. The major players were China and Russia. Beginning in the 2010's, cyber wars played out between nations, however China and Russia were overwhelmed by the monopoly of Western nations capable of attacking them. Throughout the 2020's, 'Project Divisive' was launched. Eastern Nations began by pouring massive investments into oil-rich but corrupt African nations, before colonising them altogether. Countries such as Egypt, Libya, South Sudan, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda became known as 'ERANs' (Extremely Rich African Nations). The ERANs, coupled with the economic monopoly of a growing Eastern bloc was only the beginning of a dividing of the world in two: east and west. The 2040's and 2050's would see the beginning of the small wars - those which mainly began online, devastating entire nations economically for days and weeks, but would lead to the assassinations of eastern and western leaders: the British Prime Minister Anne Campbell, South Korean Prime Minister Jeong Gook Do, Nigerian President Akeju Akin. These wars would blaze out of control, leading to nuclear threats and eventually attacks. It became clear that either the West or East had to back down, and neither the old superpowers nor the new wanted to give in. As the world burned, contingency plans took effect. Government ships took thousands out into space, towards Elpis, the last hope for humanity. It is a world they will soon find to be inhabited, but the trip would take more than twenty years to reach the planet. Some passengers have had the option to freeze themselves so that the trip may go by in a heartbeat, however most ships have rotas on this equipment usage. The vast majority have steeped themselves in virtual worlds or augmented virtual worlds, so that it would seem they are living happily back on Earth rather than extremely small cell-like rooms on great metal ships. But as these wanderers hide their head in the sand, floating towards Elpis with uneasy alliances with their enemies, how will they ensure they ensure a lasting peace? And what will their arrival on Elpis mean for the current inhabitants of Elpis? Technological progress of Earth: - Spaceflight has advanced to allow for antimatter propulsion since 2067. - Infinite energy has been created through nuclear fusion: use of nuclear fusion energy became widespread by 2062. - Many nations have implemented genetic engineering of their children since 2040, allowing for biologically extremely intelligent individuals. These individuals were often sanctioned economically and politically to what they could do and how much money they could make, for fear they would take a large share of resources and even dominate countries politically. - Ageing can be slowed by 80% as of 2060, allowing humans to theoretically live several centuries. The usage of anti ageing medication is widespread throughout the ships due to its cost effectiveness and ease to synthesise, allowing the vast majority to only age by four or five years in the decades it will take to reach Elpis. - Creation of self-assembling buildings using nanotechnology was possible since 2065. Efforts to apply this technology to ships has not proved successful due to the more complex designs needed, and those with expertise to do so died back on Earth. - Nanotech clothing is the main form of clothing onboard ships, often known as the 'second skin'. This clothing is formed from billions of nanobots which arrange themselves to give the look and texture of clothing, and to a less advanced civilisation is indistinguishable from magic. This has eradicated the need for clothing and clothes washing facilities on board ships. Nanobots can adapt to their environment, allowing the clothing to become hard as steel when under firearm attack, or become cushion-like when the user falls. These have been most useful as protection against meteorites and cosmic rays during space travel.
I don't even have Scotch, I just felt it was appropriate to write. I'm presently subsisting on a helluva lot of coffee and weed. I love living alone. David Bowie up full volume, dancing around the room like a crazy person. Man, I'm too alike my character for this.

Woah, it's 18 years old in Scotland. What's a 'hard lemonade'? Voddy and lemon? That's adorable. :D
