Katsuya pondered Ollie’s inquiry while vigorously chewing on a fluffy piece of pancake; it seemed the question posed by her spec wearing soul sister concerned Kat’s enjoyment of camp thus far and despite the innocent intentions it was a very emotionally loaded question. It was not Ollie’s fault that she could not feel the swell of conflicting feelings brewing inside Kat; on one hand she loathed Jessie, but on the other she was enraptured by her like the simple moth drawn to an open flame. Kat lifted the lukewarm pot of coffee to her lips and begin to pour the liquid down her gullet in a pitiful attempt to buy time to formulate an answer that would not tip Ollie off to the fact that she was totally crus…involved in an intense rivalry with one of her more attractive peers. Ollie did not have to be dragged into the middle of this dialectical confrontation as the poor dear was entirely too innocent; Kat inquisitively glanced up at Ollie from her pot of coffee as to briefly validate her internalized opinion before excitably addressing her friend.
“Despite being a newblood I absolutely love camp as it is so real that it is able to give off the mysterious air associated with the unreal; also the rustic charm is a plus, it is almost like we are in the middle of the woods or something. Anyways, I have found myself becoming enthralled with the local wildlife…she is so pretty…uh the wildlife that is…the wildlife is so pretty like something off the pages of National Geographic. Ha! Oh, Ollie you should have seen this doe…let me tell you we do not have female…deer like that in Pittsburg…matter of factly we do not have much of anything in Pittsburg outside of a perpetual state of gloom and a ton of snow. Some can say Pittsuburg’s number one export should be depression, but I digress as that is enough gabbing on about my dour hometown as I am here at Camp Wonderland basking in the presence of my two favorite people. Heed this timing, happy times are indeed ahead! We should be proactive and such…whatever happened to climbing every mountain and traversing every valley? I bet if we put our minds too it we could even wrestle a fully grown grizzly bear!”
Kat punctuated her last proclamation by loudly slamming the pilfered coffee pot on the table; thankfully it remained unbroken. She took another swig of the brown liquid and considered grabbing more pancakes while the getting was good, but she was too involved in socializing to even dare to think of eating at a time like this. Kat acknowledged Elowen’s greeting with a wide smile as this girl despite seeming as fragile as her surname suggested possessed an indomitable spirt and this even awed someone as unimpressionable as Kat. It seemed that Elowen was in a sense that exquisite piece of china that Kat’s mother would warn her to be careful around lest it disappear forever. Kat addressed Elowen with an uncharacteristic sense of tact and softness.
“Oh, dear Elowen your use of verbiage is ever so inspired; it is like you paint with language itself. If I was a tenth as elegant as you are in this moment I could have tea with jolly ole Queen Elizabeth and still have plenty of whimsy to spare. However, it honestly warms me ever so to see you once again. Registration was like forever ago, but what is forever? Just the passing of time, when you are guaranteed to gaze upon those you like once again or something like that; I was never one for the whole quotation thing just isn’t my scene. As for that something to do I say we laugh a laugh a little louder, long for the danger, and learn to lo…”
Kat paused and for once in the entirety of her up to this point the constant barrage of thoughts, ideas, and so on came to a complete stand still faced with an unsurmountable blockage. She was not going to say the l-word, nope that was just ridiculousness as the l-word did not exist nor it was something one could abruptly fall into…not happening; perhaps the dreaded l-word was on the tip of her tongue, but she still could swallow this divisive statement. Did she want to? Ye..N..Yes…no. However, to avert any further emotional crisis this urge would be suppressed regardless of Kat’s personal indecisiveness on the matter. Recognizing the awkwardness of the growing silence Kat pretended to have decided to take swig of that coffee before she continued speaking.
“…to live a little bit more. Dreadfully sorry, as it seems I got lost in a train of thought as I was just thinking about that doe I happened to catch a glance of earlier. Perhaps we should go for a walk…yeah fresh air never hurt anybody and it is clear plants are our friends since they not only produce food fit for human consumption, but also help provide us with the ever precious oxygen that allows us to breathe that fresh air I mentioned…which is outside. What do you say girls, how about we depart and conquer that wild blue yonder? Or we could just take a stroll? Ease on down the road as they said in the Wiz. I am game for anything and everything. Just say the words.”
