This is why you semi-frequently get a beginning of action of some kind, or some word mush clever statement that builds into character thoughts and works into a scene.

In addition to the above, which is comprehensive enough, I'd suggest looking at actual ongoing roleplays to see the style and syntax. Read a few pages and it should come together, especially after seeing the above.
