Modern society believes that it's diversity is found in all of the different traits people in the human race can have. The species went wrong in assuming they were the only one. There is another species that lives within them, simply known as "Avatars". They are fewer in number and as mysterious as they are invisible to the human eye. They are humanoid, yes. Their skeleton is still on the inside, too. In fact, everything is the same except for strange and unique abilities. This species has been around for as long as humans have, living amongst them as relatively mutual neighbors, neither threatening their existence nor being entirely benevolent.
When you can only be identified by your own kind, who else is to believe you are anything but crazy or bored? Your supernatural abilities, when they can rarely be perceived by any human beings, are more likely to get you into trouble than anything else. Indeed, you and your people are trapped in anonymity; You lacking the history and culture of a tight-knit cognitive species. The interactions between the few of you are just small, unpopular dramas on a subtle stage. (yay! title usage!)
The perks of your lineage are the remarkable abilities individuals are gifted. Many of your racial siblings are born wielding keener senses and stronger bodies, or abilities to conjure and control the elements that make up their surroundings, no extent of surprises come from the rare breed. You can easily spot another of your kind in a crowd, always equipped with vibrant, neon colored eyes and skin that seemed to wearing an aura like it was laying over it's every inch. This aura expands around an Avatar who greatly channels their natural prowess. Their eyes grow brighter too. To hide yourself as an Avatar would be as humans and criminals do, with masks and clothes that cover you as well as some self-control.
Is the species dying out? If it can only reproduce with others of it's kind, and they are being heavily outnumbered, are they threatened? What will become of those whom the world does not know exist? Will they join together or tear each other apart? For what means and to what end will they do so?
This will take place is a city, with plenty of alleys and shadows to escape plenty of eyes and ears. We will see where this leads upon the collection of characters. First things first, will it generate interest?
