Name:
Y Ddraig Goch [Ancient Welsh] || The Red Dragon [Ancient English] || Draig [Modern Codename]
Appearance:
It's body head to toe is a deep red, not far off the flag it has adorned for centuries. It's scales are thick and coat every inch of it's body with massive talons adorning the end of each leg. It's mouth is filled with rows of pointed teeth and giant horns rise from it's head like a crown. The back of it's neck is covered in long, pointed spines that lead down to two gigantic wings.
While at first glance it appears Draig is a quadruped, it is actually equally comfortable on two legs as it is four. It utilises four when it wants to move quickly around the ground and to dodge incoming attacks. Standing up on it's hind legs is a very offensive posture and a sign that things are about to get very violent, very quickly.
Size:
On All Fours: [164' | 50m] || Stood Up: [328' | 100m] || Wingspan: [738' | 225m]
First Appearance:
While it's first appearance in the world has been lost to history, in the modern day it currently slumbers beneath the mountain of Snowdonia with Outpost 8 hidden with it. With the increased monster activity Draig is starting to stir from it's slumber and expected to awake soon.
Abilities:
• Born of the Core || It's true nature and birth is unknown but scientists believe that Draig used to sleep close to, if not inside the core of the Earth. They have traced an underground cave system several hundred beneath where the dragon sleeps. They propose that after seismic activity the entrace to the cave system was blocked resulting in Draig sleeping where he is now. Considering this proposal, Draig doesn't actual appear to give off body heat beyond that of a human.
Draig is completely immune to even the highest temperatures but what truly sets it apart is it's breath ability. Able to channel a natural chemical reaction within it's body it can unleash a beam of searing heat. Brief bursts of flame burn at over 1000 degrees celsius but a fully charged beam will burn hotter than even the core of the Earth, melting whatever it touches with ease.
• Flight || If you have a creature with giant wings you would expect it to be able to fly and in Draig's case the scientists expect it to be capable of some level of flight. There are doubts about it's agility or speed when compared to some of the other known monsters, however that is down to it being generally bulkier than most other flight capable creatures.
Draig is capable of flight but given it's bulky nature it is slower than most of the other known flyers. That doesn't mean it is a slouch and is capable of getting close to the sound barrier. If it flies too close to the floor it's bulk can cause a draft superior to that of a major hurricane.
• Hardened Bone Structure || Analysis of Draig's claws and teeth have returned data that suggest it's teeth and claws have a denisty surpassing anything else known to mankind. Any and all attempts to extract samples have failed as no tool is capable of chipping away at either the teeth or claws. All scientists agree that they wouldn't want to be on the end of either. They believe that not just the teeth and claws are this dense but that it's entire bone structure is.
The pressure exerted in the core has hardened the claws and entire bone structure of Draig to levels deemed impossible. The point of each claw is capable of cutting through almost anything it comes in contact with. It's bone density is exceedingly strong and only a truly catastrophic attack would result in any sort of skeletal injury. It's bite is capable of exerting great pressure that can lock onto a foe much like certain breeds of dog.
• Scales || On initial assessments from distance it appeared as if Draig had a smooth, muscular body. However upon closer inspection scientists discovered that its body is coated in small, but very thick scales. Attempts to remove them failed but several scans reveal abnormalities beneath. It is suggested that there may in fact be further scales beneath the outer layer.
Draig’s scales are smaller than many of the other creatures that have been discovered. Their smaller size however does not take away from their durability as they are as dense as the creatures claws. What makes Draig’s scales special is the ability for Draig to shed them. This is particularly useful when attacks utilising acid and poison land as he can shed the affected scales before any damage occurs. In total Draig has two layers of scales before it’s hide is exposed, however these scales regenerate over a few days.
Weaknesses:
• Bodies of Water || Scientists have struggled to find a true weakness for Draig but one has the theory that it would struggle in water.
While a jet of water will do nothing to the creature, in large bodies of water Draig is completely out of it's comfort zone. With only a basic capability to swim, Draig would find itself severely outmatched against anything with even a remote capability to swim.
• Electricity || During tests run during its slumber, Scientists could see noticeable reactions when electric currents were applied to the sleeping giant. They propose that it is highly susceptible to electricity.
While a lightning bolt may provide some level of discomfort for Draig, electric attacks by other creatures which far surpass the power of a lightning bolt ignore its armoured scales and can cause heavy damage.
• Benevolent || The scientists have nothing to go on with regards to Draig’s attitude against humanity. Trawling through the myths and legends they believe that it is far from an enemy of humanity. Until it awakes however, the answer is unknown.
The true nature of Draig is also one of its weakness. It acts as a guardian to humanity and will willingly throw itself in the way of an attack should it feel a risk to humanity is present. If an enemy has any level of intelligence, it could use this to distract the dragon.
Personality:
With the temperatures that Draig can create, you could be forgiven for thinking its a hot head. In reality the creature is often calm and collected, showing signs of patience and intelligence. There are exceptions to this. Wanton destruction of humanity can push Draig towards the edge and can cause it to enter a rage.
Above all else Draig is a protector of humanity. It would throw itself in the way of attacks to protect humans and has done so centuries ago.
History:
It is unclear beyond several old drawings and books as to the history of Draig. One thing is certain and that is centuries ago it was involved in a fight against another Dragon. Simply referred to as The White Dragon in modern English, it is believed that both Dragons appeared one day. The one to destroy humanity, the other to save it. Draig as the saviour was fortunate enough to stop The White Dragon. No remains have been found of The White Dragon so it’s hypothesised that it could be in a similar hibernating state to Draig.
Other:
Currently hibernating beneath Outpost 8 in Snowdonia National Park, Wales.
