Well, it's overly conspiratorial, but if it made for a bad story, it wouldn't be told quite as much. Personally though, I wouldn't want to go down the overly-based-on-real-life path. That's politics, and wouldn't make for a good roleplay.
But a dystopia is still plenty of fun.
Picture a society drenched in banality, where people pay drown in meaningless information about trends and fads and celebrities. Even governments struggle to process all the excess information, and try to clamp down and increase survellance efforts. Radicals opposed to it slip underneath it and try to stop it by force, only making it stronger instead. Freedoms are removed in almost every aspect.
And no one even notices, too busy watching Pawn Star Shore Dynasty.
We're neck-deep in the dystopia when the RP starts. It's a slice of life story, in the middle of locked-down world that makes no sense whatsoever, neither to the people who live in it, the people who run it, or the people who write it.
I guess that could be fun. To me, at least. Maybe not as original as you were hoping though.
