Is it bad form to post an interest check for a game in more than one forum? I have one in Advanced and I was thinking of having a post in the Casual forum as well. Advanced seems like it is less trafficked and the standards I have in mind could apply to either group.

Totem
Setting
Welcome to Verloren, a fantasy world with vast forests, bustling cities, rural townships, imposing castles, forgotten ruins, looming mountain ranges, and dangerous seas populated by many nations, races, and ethnicities. This is a time of relative peace. While some spy networks and assassins may be consorting in the shadows, there is no open warfare between recognized nations. Citizens and merchants are free to travel across borders as long as they adhere to generally reasonable regulations. A magic based on patterns has brought the world to the cusp of an industrial age as a few rudimentary machines powered by totemic energies have been recently invented.
Magic System
Over the last few centuries, scholars, wisemen, and tinkerers all over the world have discovered that there are certain patterns capable of creating energetic reactions. They call these patterns totems. Certain rudimentary totems are merely two dimensional patterns that can be created with simple lines in dirt or paint on a wall. Other totems are three-dimensional shapes; perhaps knots of copper wire in intricate weaves, or a complex spiral of blown glass with a precise volume. Some totems seem to work with nearly any material. Others only work with one. Still others only work with several materials coming together. Generally, the more complex the pattern and rarer the material, the more powerful the effect, though this is not always true. While some cultures reserve their totems for political, religious, or military use, other cultures share their knowledge with the populace. The magical effects of totems are not usually spectacular or grandiose; often they are practical. Some totems may produce a soft light. Others may ward away mosquitoes. Perhaps the most widely used totemic arrangement in southern Verloren is an intricate hatchwork that produces heat several hundred degrees just above it. Those that have learned this totem most often use it to heat their home or start fires. Some cultures view totems as some sort of anchor or umbilical line connecting the physical world to gods or spirits, and that using the totems is perhaps a form of prayer. Others see it as disrespectful or a display of blasphemous arrogance towards the gods, like a child yanking at the hem of its parent demanding attention. Others view it as an extension of the natural world without any being or consciousness behind it, and that it is to be viewed in the way a lightning rod attracts lightning, the way water and sunlight give life to plants, the way iron rusts when exposed to water and air. Still others suppose that there is no real difference between the different schools of thought. Knowledge of totems has dispersed and spread throughout the world as several ancient Caiteran Empire trade routes have been reconstructed and reopened; the degree of cultural dissemination has risen as a result.
The White Guard
Character Creation
Just about any fantasy humanoid race is playable. I will allow original races, but be sure to keep it grounded in a grittier fantasy setting. Nothing immortal. Nothing that doesn't have a body. Nothing extra-dimensional. Nothing undead. No vampires, sentient golems, demons, angels, elemental spirits... That said, if you tweak an archetype enough so that it fits into this world, I'll consider it. For example: werewolf is a no, but potentially I could be talked into a wolfman.
  • Name
  • Description Include your appearance, apparent age, anything we need to imagine your character.
  • Backstory Be sure to include any keystone moments in your character's history. If you are using an original race, be sure to include your cultural norms and whether or not your character fits into them.
  • Goals/Fears What does you character want both now and in the future? What is your character afraid of? I don’t mean a fear of spiders, though feel free to include those sorts of fears in here too. Fear of dying alone, fear of love or commitment, fear of insignificance, fear of being discovered?
  • Mastery What is your character good at?
  • Equipment Tell me what your character has on their person.
  • Personality How does you character interact with others? What does you character think about itself?
  • Totem A magical item unique to you. I would like a description, a backstory (where you found or learned it), as well as its magical properties. This shouldn’t be viewed as your ticket to OPness, but rather as a way of making your character unique. I will veto outrageous totems. If your character has mastery in totemic magic, you may include more than one, though I may need to pare down your list.
Expectations
Yes, speaking for myself, if you ever want to push the story forward, just do it. I will always be on board.
"Skills?" Poppy said with her head tilted quizzically. "Well, I can dance, I can sew, I can sing--though not that well. If you would like to hear me whistle or anything, I'm sorry, I just can't. Unless I HAD a whistle, I suppose. But I would need a normal, fairy whistle. Human-sized whistles are too big, obviously, so..." Poppy hesitated, as she began to notice the group that had circled around the purple-haired lady. These were fighters. Some big ones. Some medium big ones. And a little wizard. Oh. The purple-haired lady said "Prison-Castle" as if Poppy should have heard of it. Maybe she had once, but had forgotten long ago. Maybe Poppy had even been there before.Perhaps back when it was just a castle. Or just a prison. Or just a wooded area before the masons had even laid their first stone. Judging by the types of people gathering, this was a dangerous place. That changed everything. "Oh oh oh!" A smile blossomed on Poppy's face. "So this is a proper adventure then? Of course it is! Well..." The little fairy slid out her needle from the spool of thread. "I'm good with this too! If anyone gets hurt, I can stitch you up. I know the right herbs and I know a bit of magic too. I can heal you right up." "Also," Poppy continued, her smile darkening, "if it gets real bad, I can fight too. I'm smaller than this lot, but I'm fast. Give me a razor or a shiv my size and I can take out an eye or cut a throat. I know poisons. Just a couple of the right drops on my needle, a little pinprick I can make someone dead in an hour. Or another one that just makes them fall asleep. But if you want me to do that I'll need to find another needle." Poppy's frown broke into a sly smile. "Wouldn't want to use the same needle for healing, eh?" she said, and then started giggling uncontrollably. With mirthful tears shining in her eyes, Poppy caught her breath. "So when are we going?"
I say go ahead. If we stay in the pub I think the other posters won't have an issue catching up.
Poppy was in a silly mood.

For several hours she darted around the kitchen, hiding spices from the cooks, untying apron knots, and nicking tiny handfuls of sugar. She had just made up a game that had her removing the coppers from a man’s purse and whenever he wasn’t paying attention plopping them into his mug of ale. She wanted to see his round, fat face flush when he had finally noticed her handiwork and the coppers rattled against his teeth. Maybe he'd think he won a prize. It was all she could do not to burst out into a giggle fit just thinking of it.

As the man was about to drink the last gulp of frothy ale and discover her secret game, a voice from behind her filled the room as everyone else seemed to grow quiet. Half-listening, she couldn't make it out. Something about ‘Prism-Cattle’? She turned to see a small group gathering around a table, but from her hiding spot Poppy couldn’t see who or what they were looking at. Her wings hummed softly as she rose through the air above the stinky townsmen until she saw her. In the middle of this slowly forming pack of people was a lady with a large sword at her side and hair that was long and…

“Purple!” she squealed. Poppy whizzed over just behind the the sword-lady, trembling with excitement as she admired the waterfall of soft, tumbling lavender that fell down the lady’s shoulders. Her brown eyes shined with delight--and perhaps a little envy--as she reached out with a tiny hand into the violet hair, slowly removing a long, loose strand. “It’s gorgeous!” Poppy cried. Turning the hair in her palms reverently, she wrapped it around her wrist several times into a loosely woven violet bracelet. Thrilled, Poppy's wings thrummed as she darted around the beautiful head of hair to the front until she hovered about eye level with this magnificent creature.

“Excuse me, you’re stunning. I’m Poppy,” she said, twirling in the air, holding out her freshly bangled wrist ostentatiously in front of the lady. “Where did you say you were going? ‘Brittle Vassal’ or ‘Risen Gas-Well’? Anyway, I’m coming with you, just let me have some more of your hair. Please. I’ve never seen purple hair on a lady before. Doesn’t it look nice on me too?”

@clark: We have a healer intending to sign up, but since we'll probably be splitting up a few times two healers can't hurt at all.

Oh good! Does that mean I can join in the IC thread now or do I need to wait?
I think you've got enough players, but just in case someone drops out, I'd like to make a submission.

Name: Poppy
Age: Looks (and acts) like a child of 11 or 12 years old.
Gender: Female
Race: Fairy
Class: Healer with a dash of Rogue

Appearance: Poppy is quite tall for a fairy--nearly six and one quarter inches--and is perhaps a little too proud of that fact. Her hair is wild and strawberry blonde, flower petals and tiny feathers braided within the tangles. She has rich, brown eyes that sparkle with mischief. In the moonlight her pale skin nearly shimmers. She wears a dress that is crafted from a variety of natural materials including iridescent flower petals and vibrant green blades of weaved grass that wrap around her waist. Though Poppy adores shoes, she often misplaces them and as a result is nearly always barefoot.

Personality: In many ways, Poppy is like most fairies: infinitely curious, mischievous, and a little forgetful. When you've been around as long as she has, you learn to not hold onto memories too tightly because there's simply not enough room in such a little head. She lives almost entirely in the present moment, rarely thinking about what happened before and never about what is to come. Though at times boredom can lead her to be distracted, she is capable of an almost absurd focus if something interests her. Poppy is fascinated by new things, people, accents, customs, mechanisms, experiences, anything she hasn't seen before. This informs her adventurous spirit which is fueled in equal parts by uncommon courage and naiveté.

Backstory: Born in a remote forest somewhere in northern Velt, Poppy has lived a long life of fearless wonder. She danced for weeks with her fairy-sisters during the solstice celebrations, travelled up and down the River Nirinel, skittered across battlefields between clashing warriors of some nation or another, followed a baby turtle throughout its entire life until it grew old and died on the banks of Vaelin's lake... She lives her life with her eyes wide open, ready to see what the day will bring.

Equipment: She carries with her a thin spool of many different colored threads and a needle that she likes to swing about like a sword. She has a small hollowed acorn where she keeps some treats: a drop of honey and a dusting of pollen.

Abilities: Poppy has an innate harmonious relationship with nature. Most woodland predators either ignore or tolerate her presence completely. She has an intuitive knowledge of flowers, fauna, and herbs, and knows of their restorative or poisonous properties. She's good at sewing and is capable of mending wounds quickly and cleanly with natural herbs and a touch of magic. She's very fast and nimble when she is flying, and would be very difficult to catch without a net. While it isn't saying much, Poppy is stronger than she looks, and is able to lift nearly five pounds in flight for a short distance.
