In some ways, the guildfall was a blessing. It makes it harder for my original 2009 RPing to be found...

I've finally returned to the Guild. Many months of much RPing ahead.

A thousand things to be done; plenty motivation.

Been here on the guild since April '08, seen a lot of change but still love it. I've been on and off, I've GM'd fantastic projects and train-wrecks, it all comes with the territory. I once tried to make a YouTube ad for the guild because I'm slightly insane. In a weird place with the Guild right now, seems like so many names I knew are gone, but more than happy and ready to meet new people. Been writing casually for over a decade, a lot of that practice has been here. I have some small short sci-fi stories printed in anthologies but those are so heavily edited they don't even feel like mine any more.

When not on the Guild I'm most likely working, playing FFXIV or the Souls series or (insert recent must play video game).
Anyone with a passing interest in sci fi needs to read Saga by Brian K Vaughan.

I'm just going to break this down point for point.

-The writing, in this submission is not up to the minimum standard of what I considered Advanced. This isn't a discussion; as GM it's my prerogative to dictate standards.

-I am however, not some elitist snob. I'm more than happy to have you join the RP if you're willing to buck up the standard a bit, and I am willing to help however I can.

-The sheet just isn't long enough. Though fair enough if it's not complete, I mean there's asides not edited out.

-An American mech would not have Panzerfaust in its name, or anything remotely 'panzer' associated with it.

-The lack of characterisation other than 'I killed my parents 'cause mechs are cooler.'

-How is it piloted and remotely operated surely it's one or the other? Unless you're using the word pilot to refer to control in general?

-Dimensions 2x3x2 what? Metres? That's pretty small and very oddly shaped.

-As for the picture even if it is for illustrative purposes, it doesn't fit the setting. We're somewhere between 'real-robots' and quasi 'superrobots' not ultra sci-fi interstellar mechs.

-I just generally feel you may have skimmed the concept, jumped on the word mech and filled in some blanks.

I don't mean to sound overly harsh, but I don't think adequate thought/effort was put into this application.

I understand it is a work in progress and the final product may invalidate a lot of the above points, but I just wanted to express my concerns for what I can see.

Nonetheless, I am happy you expressed an interest and would wish to join, if you're willing to address my issues, I'm willing to discuss anything I can do to accommodate.
Would you be cool with the idea of me playing a three-man unit of 'ankle-biters' Highly specialized anti-mech / support infantry?

That sounds like a really cool idea! Imperial, Asian, European or other?
When I was a kid, there was a year or so where everyone made fun of my father because he made a woman he worked with cry. We were like "Aww, you're such a mean guy!" and he took it in stride because giving each other shit was just how we were raised, but I was reminded of the reason he made this girl cry when I started reading this thread. Basically, he is a machinist for a living, and he was in charge of supervising the floor. She was younger than him, but I don't remember how much younger because I never actually met her. Anyway, she was supposed to write reports for either him or one of the higher-up managers, but she had this habit of drawing flowers and bunnies and shit like that all over the reports. Just really into doodling I suppose. Anyway, my father told her that it was incredibly unprofessional to doodle all over reports because it made them all look bad to management, and so she cried.

Presentation isn't something to gawk at. Certain lapses of presentation signify something broader about the presenter. In the same way a resume written in crayon suggests the applicant isn't taking their application seriously, or a traditional novel written in comic-sans might suggest an author who doesn't not respect his readers, or inventory reports with flowers and bunnies drawn in the margins looks unprofessional, an RP written with colors suggests immaturity in the RPer. I'm going to be blunt here, the attitude that it is difficult to read without runescapeing out all your text is an example of what I mean. If you actually actively hate the words themselves, if you have contempt for the writing and feel like the text needs to be gawdy and colorfied, then I don't want you in an RP with me. The idea that you use colors to symbolize who is talking suggests to me you want to skip the text and just read bits of dialogue, which is fine if we are preteens twittering twilight fanfic, but if we are going to write something with substance then all the shit in between the colored dialogue matters just as much as the dialogue itself.

Like, if you are coming out and telling me now, in this thread, that you don't have the attention span to actually read a thing straight, then you've proved every point I have made.

I agree with this sentiment 100%

I'm a big user of colored text in Headers and in OOC opening posts which tend to be massive info dumps but in character, just no. Sparkling your writing makes it seem like the presentation value means more to you than the actual quality of the writing.

Unless you're trying to highlight or incorporate something new or in a new fashion, I think colouring just detracts from the post unless used cleverly.
<Snipped quote by Darkmatter>

Perhaps. Personally, I've been busy earlier today in light of my little brother's birthday party and I have business tomorrow afternoon. The only thing I'm certain of is that I probably won't have time to properly write a character until Wednesday at the earliest.

However, I'm not averse to spending time here in the OOC and make things a little lively by chatting with you all.

Though I do have a question as to what you're expecting from the participants for this roleplay. Knowing what you want would help me in coming up with a suitable character. I always felt that simply writing a character freely without oversight is like jamming a star-shaped block into the square hole. You could do it, but it's more trouble than needed.

I work full time 9-6, so most of my day is spent behind a computer so it may just seem like a long time to me

What I expect is a couple of things:
1. To be able to have range of characters on different sides.
2. To handle combat/action sequences maturely, characters can die.
3. To acknowledge and contribute to the development of the central plot I have ready.
4. Be willing to put up their own plot ideas! It should still be a joint effort.

Does this answer your question or were you more getting at what specific types of character I'd like to see?

The whole core plot will become more apparent. But as it seems obvious, it will focus on the rebellion in Europe, and deeper reasons behind the Empire's birth and expansionism.
I guess I'll create some villainous schemer. I love making those. I'll also be an American.

I look forward to it!

I think the seemingly slow speed of my responses is probably due to Timezone difference.
@Darkmatter Ahh, I see what you're saying. I'll draw up the concept for it, but perhaps start it later on in the RP and focus on my MURICAN character first instead. I realize that the early stages of the RP are the most important, and having character interaction would be much easier with some muricans and one group of rebels rather than a bunch all at once.

Given the furistic setting, we can assume travel is easier than today so different factions in Europe could easily co-ordinate and co-operate. We are lacky Muricans for now though. Feel free to do both.

It hasn't been stated but I'd say it's safe assumption to assume the mechs utilize at least some kind of wheeled boosting capabilty, or large scale aerial transport. They ain't gonna be walking across continents.
Perhaps advanded boosting and flight capable mechs will be an IC development we can work out?
Cool, as for what we discussed I'll have it written out in a few days when I get home from BC

I like your CS! That definitely gave me some inspiration.

I'm thinking of running a micro-Basque resistance state with a base in the Pyrenees---does that sound good to you @Darkmatter? And would anyone be interested in joining?

I'm off for the next three days so expect to see something from me up here; I need to use my time wisely!

Sounds great! Though bare in mind, as I've said, getting too inwordly focused on our factions will lead to the RP dying! It should still be a character driven experience with plenty interaction between characters. The idea you have sounds great though.

Also, your signature. It's too hypnotic.
So I finished a CS. I will be proofreading and rewriting it all though. First drafts tend to suck, and I feel it is too clichéd and melodramatic even for this RP . Yet, I wanted to get to ball rolling and give you guys an idea.

Edit:
If someone is playing as an Imperial soldier/knight/rook/something and feels their mech design isn't like what I have posted as 'canon' just say it! I'm nice like that.
✎Name:
Leon Schäfer

✎Age:
22

✎Sex:
Male

✎Nationality:
Non-citizen Resident of the Spruce Dominion. Formerly German.

✎Appearance:
Leon isn’t very distinct in his appearance, but, most people aren’t. He is 6’1” with sandy brown hair kept neat in a modern side-comb. Leon’s physique is quite excellent, due mostly to his military service and general belief in keeping healthy. He is most often seen in public in his plain black non-descript work uniform. His naked skin carries a number of minor marks from the war, but the only notably visible damage is on his left pectoral area; a large patch of burned skin, an archaic removal of a tattoo that had depicted a German insignia.

Keeping his stubble at a gentle five o’clock shadow, he is well groomed for the most part. During his clandestine activities, he is usually seen in simple dark jeans, plain t-shirts and a knee-length black parka jacket. As is the case with all involved in the DFV, when conducting outside operations, his face is covered at all times.

✎Character Type:
Military personnel in the Deutsch Freiheit Vorne, and within European resistance movements in general. Maintains Civilian appearances in everyday life.

✎Rank/Title:
Former Leutnant (Lieutenant) in the Mench Panzer Division of the Heer. Currently acting as a de-facto Oberst (Colonel) in liberation circles despite the impossibility of ever actually receiving promotion.

✎Job/Position:
Line technician for East Imperial Refining Industries. This job is one of the most menial and lowly-classed jobs still required to be carried out by humans in the Empire, and hence is reserved almost exclusively for Non-Citizens in any Dominion. Refining operations of crude oil, rare earth elements and a variety of other substances is currently massive in the relatively recently conquered Europe. Mining operations are excessive.

✎History:
Born on the eve of the War, Leon knew nothing of it for a long time; the Great War was one fought via proxy and politics for almost half of its duration. Months after his birth the world he yet knew nothing about plunged from the precipice of peace and descended into further chaos. Leon was born into a mostly average working class family in the suburbs of Berlin. Whilst he didn’t live a life of luxury by any means, he was afforded every possible opportunity he could have hoped for during war time. The school that he and his old brother attended was a fantastic facility. His early childhood and into his teens, he and his family were relatively sheltered from the war. Given the massive distances involved and, and the size of Europe as a continent, the war was not a quick one even with the advanced weaponry deployed by both sides. Right up until he was sixteen, Leon lived a good life, if one constantly overshadowed with some fear.

In his sixteenth year however, the Empire swooped down from Greenland and quickly overtook Ireland, The United Kingdom and much of France. Whilst fighting with the Empire up until that point had mostly been against 3rd Generation Armoured Dragoons*, yet the Imperium gobbled up Europe’s western front in seemingly unstoppable 4th Gen Dragoons. Panicked, and requiring immediate response, the Federation unanimously enforced a quasi-conscription decree in every member state. Under this legislation, each member had to increase its armed forces by a certain extent but was free to do so how it saw fit. Germany, having already been the largest deployer of troops during the proxy wars, other than Britain, was running thin and enacted a brief period of mandatory conscription. Such is how Leon, at the age of sixteen, found himself alongside his brother in basic training.

Though some would call it a blessing, Leon would later in life reflect that it was curse; excelling at basic training he also showcased superb tactical ability and great resolve. Leon was not an extraordinary individual, merely got caught up in the fever of the war and showcased talents deemed wanted. After six months of basic training he was, without warning, taken from the camp. En route to an airbase located several kilometres south, it was explained to him he had been selected from among basic recruits to join the Laufen Panzer Division**. Surprised but also somewhat relieved, not sure of how to react, Leon now just seventeen years of age, accepted what he was being told.

Arriving via cargo plane, having flown east for several hours, he began to raise some questions. Why were they flying away from the frontlines where the Panzers should be? Why was he the only cadet ‘assigned’? Sequestered into what was revealed to be a research facility, the truth was laid out before him. He was in fact going to be put through a rigorous regime of training again, nothing like he had experience this far; the war could hinge on his performance.

Initially the training seemed odd, unusual and at times pointless. Much of it was mental training, hours at a time standing still in silence alone, tests with experimental weaponry in which he was asked to attempt to fire guns with no triggers. It all seemed like madness. That was until, three weeks into the stay he had reached breaking point. He just wanted it to end, even the frontlines would be better than this daily mental strain. During yet another ‘weapon practice’ he began damning the gun itself, wishing his hatred into it; and it fired.

This moment is what lead to the ‘greater plan’ being divulged to him. The weapon was not magic, just an extremely advanced neural interface which operated off neural firings. Perplexed he question why this would ever be needed over a conventional trigger; Mensch Panzer*** was the answer. The Prototype Dresden Mk 01 was shown to him at this point. The Mensch Panzer, a molding of man and machine, no cockpit, no control systems, simply a cavity into which the operator slotted, controlling the machine as their own body, via direct neural interface. It was beyond that of even the 4th Gen Dragoons, which only had partial neural targeting systems.

The next three years of Leon’s life have very little to be said about them. He trained relentlessly, more determined than ever, feeling special for having been chosen, regardless of the actual circumstances of his choosing. In his twentieth year, the nineteenth year of the War, he along with two other Dresden pilots were deployed, back in Germany. The Siege of Dusseldorf had been going catastrophically for the Federation forces attempting to hold the city. Imperial Dragoon Squads were doing an outstanding job of mopping up resistance. His first real taste of combat was something incredible, with Leon knocking up a thirty seven confirmed Dragoon kill count. He and his two other Dresden pilots turned the tide of the Siege. Victory was short lived however, as the mental strain on them had been too much. One of the other pilots died when his heart suddenly stopped, and both Leon and the third pilot fell into deep comas not long after the battle.

Wishing to hide the nature of the Dresden project, Federation forces quietly moved the mechs to an undisclosed location in Berlin. The two pilots remaining alive, were kept in civilian hospitals, with no definite conclusion as to whether they would wake or not.

Leon did. After the war.

Well welcome aboard!
The OOC might seem a bit slow at the minute but it'll definitely pick up once I get my character up and the rest of you are awe-inspired.

Edit:

Btw, the IC will be starting sometime after the Battle of Amsterdam. Eighteen months to two years was my initial thoughts. The new status quo having been firmly established.

Edit:

I have a bare bones CS up, I'll be adding to it continually this evening, just wanted to let ye know what at least one of my main characters will be.
