Also then, your image is a woman in armor and yet you said steampunk technology. Are you looking for more fantastical settings till with armor, swords, and mages still? Or more so Victorian steampunk outfits, some single and double shot steam guns, and steam tech being the main focus.
Hey, once again sorry. I attempted to make the character twice now but am in a rut of ideas (as well as images I like). Just curious while I hunt them down, do you prefer photos, art, or anime style ones.
Might be fun
I'm just going to put out there that arena usually doesn't go well in my personal experiences.

What happened to everyone-
My vote lies with Locked Inside and Clans/Factions. Simply put, why aren't hackers just banned and such as well as if there is a killer how do the moderators or system administrators not track them down. They literally have scanned the brain and sometimes the body of every player. It wouldn't be hard to see which character ends another character and know instantly who they are in real life. It would take a lot of simply having some bull like 'they have ways around it' to actually hide who they are and how they are killing people.
Plot line ideas? Well, being locked inside is the standard idea usually. However, the reason it is standard is because the real world part of it is usually boring and you are simply waiting to get back into the game.As well as if it's just a game then why would anyone truly care what happens and if they die. Not as much of an impact and such. Also, for this VRMMORPG, you would need to decide how they play. Do they hook up and basically sleep like SAO or another method. So preferably I think the focus needs to be solely on the game, likely locked inside from the simple limitation of that usually the real world is boring and just the break between getting back to the game unless you have a really good plot plan for it. As for what to focus on inside the game it would depend on what the goal of the game is and how to escape it. (Of course that also depends on if the players know how to escape or not.)
Is the heroine an NPC or your character?
Could be fun, though unlike SAO instant timeskips are a bad idea. SAO missed one of the most important aspects that could have turned their 2D cardboard character archetypes known as people into actual characters if it had shown the process of people getting used to the world. After all, being suddenly put into a life or death situation as well as the fact that that world had no leaders was important. Seeing the rise of the factions, leaders, and characters would have made it better rather than a time skip and you just have to believe all of those people are important one way or another.
