How It Began

SOMETIMES I WISH THAT I WERE THE SPERM CELL THAT LOST, that instead of me swimming to my mother's egg and coming in first place, I would have decided to lag behind a bit or, better yet, turned around and swam in a completely different direction. Because, when it came down to it, I'd much rather still be swimming around in my father's ball sack than sitting in Mrs. Marshall's math SAT preparation course.

It was a Thursday afternoon, and Patricia Marshall stood at the very front of the classroom with her back to the class and her hand moving furiously; she was scribbling formulas on the board with a bright green dry-erase marker. The color was so light and the numbers were so small and slanted that I had to squint in order to read it, even though I probably had the best vision out of everyone in the class. Mrs. Marshall either didn't care or didn't notice, because once she finished writing, she capped the marker and went back to her desk to continue reading her book.

Mrs. Marshall didn't teach, as she'd told us on the very first day of school. She told us that she would simply "refresh our memories" about things that we should have already been taught. Her idea of refreshing our memories, however, was writing down a bunch of formulas and giving us worksheets to complete while she read a new book or finished a crossword puzzle. What pissed me off more than anything, though, was the fact that I genuinely needed to improve my math skills so that I could do better on my next SAT, and this class wasn't helping in the slightest.

"Cameron. What the hell does that even say?" Zoya whispered from the seat next to me, and all I could do was shrug my shoulders. Zoya was a girl that I'd known since the year before, in our Junior year, but didn't get to know until I walked into Mrs. Marshall's class on the first day and realized that she was the only person in the class that I recognized. We definitely weren't the best of friends; she had a slight Jamaican accent that sometimes made it hard to understand everything she said and, more often than not, smelled strongly of a weird mixture of fried plantains and castor oil, but she was friendly. I'd rather have someone to vent to about our teacher than keep it all bottled up until the next period.

"Girl, I don't even remember how to do this shit," I said with a roll of my eyes, "we haven't done this since the eighth grade." The worksheet that lay on my desk had been untouched; I hadn't even written my name at the top, yet. I knew it would probably stay that way until tomorrow night when I would write down a bunch of nonsense and turn it in the following morning for a completion grade. "I don't see how any of this will ever be useful in real life."

"Whatever, I'm just not gonna do it," Zoya said, throwing her pencil down on her desk. I wasn't surprised because Zoya never did her work for any of her classes. Just the other day she'd showed me her grades from her last report card, and I was amazed that she'd even made it to her senior year. "My teachers just get tired of seeing me in their class," she told me, "so they give me a D and move on."

A few more minutes went by before the bell rang, signaling the beginning of B lunch, and all thirteen of us ran out of the door as soon as we could. Zoya and I headed in the opposite direction of the wave of students; we took the long way to the lunchroom so that we could stop at the bathroom on the way. As we walked, Zoya rambled on and on about the homecoming dance that was in a couple of weeks, and I pretended to listen. High school dances weren't really my thing, and Zoya knew it. That didn't stop her from asking for the hundredth time whether or not I was going. I told her that I wasn't and she ask me who I'd voted for homecoming queen.

"Mandy," I said automatically, "Miranda Shifflett." We'd been in the same English classes ever since ninth grade.

"She's guaranteed to win," Zoya said as she dried her hands. "I mean, she's won homecoming princess three times in a row. Why not make it a fourth?" As Zoya spoke, she rolled her eyes and shot her balled up paper towel towards the garbage can, keeping her arms held high in the air, her left wrist bent. The paper towel bounced off the side of the trash can and dropped to the floor, rolling back towards one of the closed bathroom stalls. Zoya just shrugged and headed for the door. She stopped and turned around when I let out a cough.

"What? That's what we have janitors for. They'll pick it up," she said.

"That's really fucking trifling, and you know it," I said with a shake of my head. Instead of arguing with her some more, I got down onto my knees and reached under the stall door for the paper towel. "We're always complaining about how nasty these bathrooms are when we're the ones that are making it this way." I opened my mouth to say more, but froze in place once my fingers touched something odd, something warm and sticky. My hand found the paper towel and pulled it from under the stall. My eyes widened and my nose crinkled in disgust when I was that my fingertips were now covered in blood. I leaned down even further, straining to see all the way inside. My heartbeat quickened as I continued to lean, and probably stopped completely when I saw her.

"Come on, Cammy. What the hell are you looking at? We're gonna miss our lunch period," Zoya said impatiently, but I wasn't really listening to her. My eyes were focused on another pair of deep brown, glazed-over eyes.

She was laying in a weird position: her leg was bent under her body in a way that it definitely wasn't normal, her torso was facing the wall, her head was turned in my direction, and blood was pooled around her head. Her chest was barely moving, like how it's supposed to when you breathe. Was she dead? "Cammy!" Zoya exclaimed once more, and I continued to block her out. All I could do was stare.

"It's Miranda," I said hesitantly, my eyes still locked on hers. "Miranda Shifflett," I said, finally tearing my eyes away from her still body and staring at Zoya incredulously. "I think she's dead."

The girl rushed back in my direction, shoving me out of the way before pushing the stall door wide open. I didn't realized that I had started screaming until a teacher came hurrying inside.

You're a high school student attending a fairly large high school in a mundane, northern New York county. You have your own life and your own story, just like everyone else. Maybe you're the popular girl who pretends to have it all, but lives in a trailer park with her abusive father. Maybe you're the loner who has big dreams but little motivation. Or maybe you're the stoner who has repeated their Junior year for the second time and couldn't care less what the future has in store for them. You are your own person, and your entire world is about to be flipped upside down. Everything for you and everyone around you changes when two girls find the half-dead, bloody body of Homecoming Queen Miranda Shifflett in the school bathroom.

One by one, people from your town meet an untimely death, the cause of death for each of them presumed to be some sort of deadly virus. The people begin to freak out almost immediately; parents begin withdrawing their children from school and moving across the country, local business owners pack up and do the same, all while scientists and doctors work day and night to find a cure for the virus. After the virus finally runs its course through the town, the total number of deaths is calculated to be a whopping one hundred thirty-two citizens. Some, however, were lucky enough to survive, a special group of students included. You were one of them.

Basically, we'll be playing a group of teenagers who live in this town and, after they've gotten over the virus, find out that they have extraordinary gifts. What they decide to do with these special gifts are completely up to them. Maybe your character will use their abilities to fight crime. Maybe they will embrace their inner criminal and use their powers to cause trouble. Perhaps your character will keep everything on the down-low and continue to act as if everything is normal. It's all up to you.

Well, as of right now I work part-time as a waitress in this cute little vegan cafe. Thankfully Sal, the owner, is holding my position until I get back. When I'm not at work, however, I'm a college student. I'll be entering my Senior year after break is over. I'm a pre-med student, so in about a year or so I'll be going off to medical school and continuing my long journey towards becoming a licensed psychiatrist.

What has your life been like so far?

Well, as I said before, I was born in Pittsburgh. Both of my parents were eighteen when they conceived me, and no one on my mom's side of the family was really surprised when my father took off. When I was three years old, my mom's family packed up and moved to Brooklyn. There, I lived in an apartment with my mom, her parents, and my aunt. My grandparents are Jamaican immigrants, so I'm pretty close to my roots. Everyone in the house worked during the day, so before I started school, I spent most of the time with my neighbors next door. I was glad when I started school, though. I didn't like that strong tobacco smell that lingered in their apartment.

School was easy for me. I breezed through elementary school with a sixth grade reading level, and was at an eleventh grade reading level before I finished middle school. I was on my elementary school's football team until eighth grade since our middle schools don't have a football league. I tried to continue my football career in high school, but the coach didn't believe in letting girls play. Although high school was a lot more challenging than my previous years of school, I put in the work to keep my grades high. I took a bunch of advanced placement classes and somehow managed to participate in a few clubs here and there. I wasn't interested in DECA or Key Club in the slightest, but it was something to put on my college applications. I got into NYU on scholarship, but my family still had to scrape together some money to pay for things like housing and meal plans or whatever. I'm the first person in my family to go to college, so that's something.

Any quirks, talents, or weird facts about you?

Well, I guess one of my talents would be my physical ability, if that even counts. I've always been active, even after I quit playing football. I frequent the gym, and I have a group of friends that I still play basketball with in the park. I'm not ripped or anything, but I'm definitely in good shape. Another talent of mine would probably be how observant I am. I tend to notice things about people, especially, that others may not notice at first. It's one of the reasons why I'm pursuing a career in psychiatry. I can read people.

As far as weird facts go, I'm not really sure. I can fit my entire fist into my mouth, so that's something. I'm also left-handed, which is pretty weird, right? Sometimes when I get mad, I start speaking quickly and in Jamaican Patois so it may be a little hard to understand me if you're not used to hearing it. Also, I've sort of been obsessed with Doctor Who since I was a child. I've seen just about every episode there is of the show, all the way from the first episode which aired back in the sixties.

Why do you deserve to win?

I'm not sure how to answer this. I think we all would like to believe that we deserve to win this money, but at the end of the day it all just comes down to how you play the game. Play it smart, and maybe you deserve to win.

And if you do win, what will you do with the million dollars?

Well, the majority of the money will be saved and invested so that I can continue to make money, you know? A little chunk of it will go towards paying off whatever school loans and debts my family and I have, and some will go towards paying for med school. Whatever is left over, I guess I'll use it to buy my family a bigger house.

"Okay, well if I had to describe my style, the first thing that really pops into my mind would be 'fashionista.' I mean, fashion has been a passion of mine since I was a little girl. H I S T O R Y

"Ah, well where do I start? My name is Chanel Aubrey Martin, but everyone usually just calls me Coco. I was born on the fifteenth of June all the way on the other side of the country in Brooklyn, New York. My parents, Kimberly Martin and Jerome Howard, met when they were in high school. My mom was two years ahead of him, though, and basically curved the shit out of him every time he tried to flirt with her or ask her on a date. I don't really blame her, though. What Senior would be caught dead dating an immature little Sophomore? Eventually, she gave him a chance, just so he would stop bothering her. It turned out that he was everything she wanted in a man, so they stuck with each other even after she graduated and went off to college in North Carolina. My dad graduated two years after she did, and went to Duke on a football scholarship so that they could be close to each other.

My mom ended up pregnant during her Junior year of college. She was gonna abort me until my dad convinced her that they could make good parents. Four months into her pregnancy, he proposed, and they got married three months later. My mom went into labor during a family reunion in Brooklyn, much to everyone's surprise, and after I was born, I was originally named Chanel Howard. Because of my parents still trying to finish school, however, I spent the first few years of my life living with my maternal grandmother in Harlem. My grandmother was great; she could cook her ass off, she always left me to my own devices, and her apartment always smelled like gingerbread. She died when I was twelve.

After my dad finished college, he was drafted into the NFL. I was five years old when he was traded to the Oakland Raiders, and six when my family packed up and moved to California. My dad made good money, enough to buy us this big fancy house in Beverly Hills and a brand new car for my mom. He'd even put some money away in a bank account to accumulate interest so that, by the time I begin college, I'll have enough to pay for it without needing loans. We lived a happy life, I guess you could say. My mom finished school and got a job as a therapist, and my dad was always travelling with his team. Things got all fucked up when my dad came home one night and told my mom that he'd gotten some girl pregnant. That was when everything started to spiral downward.

They tried to work it out at first. They argued almost every night, which usually resulted in my father storming out and not returning until the morning after. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I found out that he was leaving to go to his new baby mama's house. Turns out, it wasn't just a one night stand. He'd been secretly seeing this woman for months. My mom filed for a divorce as soon as she found out, and ended up getting about half of his things when it was all finalized, the house included. My father moved to a house in Oakland with the other woman, and ended up proposing to her just a few months after the divorce.

Now, fast forward twelve years. My mom and I still live in the same house. She's had a few dates here and there, but no one ever stuck. Part of me feels that this is because she's still in love with my shit-bucket of a father. Now, she's never home. She usually spends most of her time at work or at the bar. When she is home, all she does is watch Grey's Anatomy and boss me around. It's just she and I living in the house, with an exception of my two pet gerbils. My father still resides in Oakland with his wife and their two kids, but I don't really talk to them. Hell, the only time I call my father is when I need money. I do think he felt kind of bad about leaving me, because he sends a big fat check to my mom every two weeks for child support even though my mom didn't really push for it in court. He even forked up the money for my car, which I suppose I am thankful for. I'm not gonna lie, I was depressed for a short period of time due to my father running off and making a whole new family. I guess I just felt that maybe I wasn't good enough for him. He now has two daughters that he cares for more than he ever cared for me. It hurts.

So, I guess that's about it. I'm almost grown now, a few months away from graduation and my eighteenth birthday. I've already started college applications, even though I'm not sure what I'll be majoring in or if I'll even stay the whole four years, but who knows? My mom doesn't see a future for me in the music business and isn't the most supportive parent in the world. She's actually pushing me to do something in the medical field, like her. Hopefully I'll get into Spelman or NYU. It'd be awesome to be able to go back to my hometown and see all of the familiar faces and places. I'm not that popular in school, but I'm not a loner, either. People like me, they like my style. I'm in a couple of clubs, but I'll mostly be hanging around The Underground, battle rapping or participating in poetry slams. I think I have a pretty good life.

The original mean girls were called The Unholy Trinity. The first names of the three "it girls" spells out H.O.T. (Hailey, Ophelia, and Trixie.)

What is your name?

My actual name is Tomera Aibileen Nile, but I've gone by Tommy since I was a child. I played football in elementary school, so the guys on my team would call me Tommy or Tom.

How old are you?

I just turned twenty a couple of days ago. Happy birthday to me.

Looking for a showmance?

I am a bisexual female, but I typically lean more towards girls. I've always been a big flirt, and I don't think that will ever change. However, I am not actively looking for love while in the house. Whatever happens will happen, but I came to win this money, not to find a boyfriend or girlfriend.

Where are you from?

Well, I was born in Pittsburgh, but I've lived in Brooklyn, New York since I was three years old. I consider NYC to be my true hometown since that's where I spent the majority of my life. I know Brooklyn like the back of my hand, but I've only one memory of living in Pennsylvania.

Do you have a job?

Well, as of right now I work part-time as a waitress in this cute little vegan cafe. Thankfully Sal, the owner, is holding my position until I get back. When I'm not at work, however, I'm a college student. I'll be entering my Senior year after break is over. I'm a pre-med student, so in about a year or so I'll be going off to medical school and continuing my long journey towards becoming a licensed psychiatrist.

What has your life been like so far?

Well, as I said before, I was born in Pittsburgh. Both of my parents were eighteen when they conceived me, and no one on my mom's side of the family was really surprised when my father took off. When I was three years old, my mom's family packed up and moved to Brooklyn. There, I lived in an apartment with my mom, her parents, and my aunt. My grandparents are Jamaican immigrants, so I'm pretty close to my roots. Everyone in the house worked during the day, so before I started school, I spent most of the time with my neighbors next door. I was glad when I started school, though. I didn't like that strong tobacco smell that lingered in their apartment.

School was easy for me. I breezed through elementary school with a sixth grade reading level, and was at an eleventh grade reading level before I finished middle school. I was on my elementary school's football team until eighth grade since our middle schools don't have a football league. I tried to continue my football career in high school, but the coach didn't believe in letting girls play. Although high school was a lot more challenging than my previous years of school, I put in the work to keep my grades high. I took a bunch of advanced placement classes and somehow managed to participate in a few clubs here and there. I wasn't interested in DECA or Key Club in the slightest, but it was something to put on my college applications. I got into NYU on scholarship, but my family still had to scrape together some money to pay for things like housing and meal plans or whatever. I'm the first person in my family to go to college, so that's something.

Any quirks, talents, or weird facts about you?

Well, I guess one of my talents would be my physical ability, if that even counts. I've always been active, even after I quit playing football. I frequent the gym, and I have a group of friends that I still play basketball with in the park. I'm not ripped or anything, but I'm definitely in good shape. Another talent of mine would probably be how observant I am. I tend to notice things about people, especially, that others may not notice at first. It's one of the reasons why I'm pursuing a career in psychiatry. I can read people.

As far as weird facts go, I'm not really sure. I can fit my entire fist into my mouth, so that's something. I'm also left-handed, which is pretty weird, right? Sometimes when I get mad, I start speaking quickly and in Jamaican Patois so it may be a little hard to understand me if you're not used to hearing it. Also, I've sort of been obsessed with Doctor Who since I was a child. I've seen just about every episode there is of the show, all the way from the first episode which aired back in the sixties.

Why do you deserve to win?

I'm not sure how to answer this. I think we all would like to believe that we deserve to win this money, but at the end of the day it all just comes down to how you play the game. Play it smart, and maybe you deserve to win.

And if you do win, what will you do with the million dollars?

Well, the majority of the money will be saved and invested so that I can continue to make money, you know? A little chunk of it will go towards paying off whatever school loans and debts my family and I have, and some will go towards paying for med school. Whatever is left over, I guess I'll use it to buy my family a bigger house.

@MissCapnCrunch Don't worry, I didn't forget about Beverly! I don't think she has anything in common with Honey or Andreas, so I was still thinking on how their friendship would be, if they'd have a friendship at all. Perhaps she and Honey could be friends... they both have their own fashion senses and enjoy keeping up with trends so maybe they bonded over that. Andreas is friendly with basically everyone, so they could be friends as well, if you want.
