"Oh, her?" said the megagoon, glancing back at the door as it developed a deep dent as it was struck by most of a table. "She's Turbo Knight 2."

You are taken through to an enormous launch chamber featuring a DOOM SATELLITE. It's a frightful amalgamation. AEGIS has dismantled, destroyed, or shot down a dozen of these over the years and this has been hurriedly constructed out of the various debris pieces that have been kept in storage. It's an inefficient and ugly piece of tech telling the stories of a dozen different supervillains. It certainly doesn't need three doomsday devices when it can only power one, and the fact that one of those doomsday devices will transform everyone on earth into adorable talking mice implies a very specific origin story.

But one of those cannons is a straight up giant laser, and it is to this you are tied, right next to the Shogun. She is not wearing her hat, which makes you taller than her. I'd advise you not to mention it.

"What are you in for?" she asks.

"Nice to see you again! I told her she was stupid to expect rational decisions from people. And I gave her advice on tea to calm down with. You? And are you able to survive the launch and space? I've always wanted to go to space." She takes a look over the DOOM SATELLITE as she chats. That thing is terribly, terribly constructed, AEGIS. Your recent merger has really tanked production values. For shame.
Your words had an impact. She stands there for a moment, hands clenching and unclenching. There are a lot of questions in her life that she doesn't know the answer to and as you watch she systematically fills them in with pure rage. Rage doesn't need answers. The only way around those questions is to decide that questions are stupid and that anyone who asks or answers them is stupid.

[Marking Angry]

"Idiots, huh? Then I'm going to send a message that even an idiot can understand," she said. "Guards. Take her out of my sight - no. Put her on the rocket, next to the other one. Granddad was right. I need to talk to the public on their level."

She locks eyes with Victoria as she starts to get surrounded by guards, who are figuring out just how to get her down. "You're a human, a unique example of infinite possibility. I hope you realize how precious that is, the ability to make your choices and be yourself. And I won't take that ability from you. Totally could, but nah. But I will stop you if you chose to hurt others with your position. That said, it was nice to meet you! I do suggest some peppermint tea. Bye now!" And the door shuts. She turns to one of the guards. "What was her name again? I don't think she ever told me."
"You're going to -" she hissed. "I don't even want fame. It's stupid! Only stupid people want fame! I just want a completely reasonable amount of respect! I've overthrown two megacorporations and am about to take down a third and I'll be the ruler of the world before I'm thirty. Is it too much to ask that every stupid teenager with a hoodie and a halloween mask stops breaking into my office to challenge me to a fistfight? That stupid old people stop second-guessing my business strategies? I just want to be taken seriously, and if that means blowing up Australia then that's what's going to happen."

"Look, lady. Humanity, collectively, is the most stubborn, idiotic, and illogical bunch of animals that you will ever meet. You are currently wearing so many different layers, in exactly such a fashion, because that is how things are done, including the makeup coating your face and nails. You just yelled at probably the most powerful tool you have access to and threatened to destroy it out of pique, because that made you feel good. You all, collectively, keep threatening your own cities and doing terrible things to each other and then go right back to where you were at the start. You. Are. Idiots." She takes a deep breath. "That's not, however, a bad thing. Out of the sheer, stubborn idiotic decisions, you decide, generally, to care about each other. To help in spite of the society built to make you care about yourself first. You want to be the ruler of the world and you're expecting to get respect for it? The one possible position where you can get blamed for everything that goes wrong, and every single hero will be after you for vengeance, for freedom, for whatever, and every single villain will be after your spot. It's not the smart thing for them to do, no, but it's the dumb thing to do and that makes it the human thing to do."
"Calm down!? I am responding exactly proportionately to the situation, how dare you tell me to calm down!?" said Victoria proportionately. "How dare you even talk to me!? Don't you know who I am!?"

There was a note of desperation in that last bit.

"That's fine. Fine," she said with the bare minimum amount of fine. "Doesn't matter. Soon everyone will know exactly who I am and what I'm capable of. Ha. Ha ha ha ha ha!" The laugh was involuntary, a stress giggle that turned into a horrified battle against herself when she realized what was happening. "It's," she clenched her teeth, trying to stop the twitching in her face. "Fine."

"Nope!" She responds cheerfully. "No idea who you are. I'm Ferra. I'd guess you know that already though." It's remarkably zen, dangling here. If she was anybody else, she'd probably be scared stiff, but honestly? No fucks given. "And yeah, no, you sound super stressed, and if you try to lie to my face again about that I'm going to laugh at you." She gives a abridged shrug. "So why do you want everyone to, I don't know, fear your power and flee in terror at your name? I'm guessing that's what you meant there."
[accepting shift, regen erases moves, changes ability, changes appearance]

She comes back to herself, blinking. While before she was edges, now it's gentle curves, whorls of etching on her face and arms, somewhat reminiscent of the ocean. She resists the urge to tug at the bindings for now, pointedly ignoring the tingling from it, certainly just the electricity. "Do you need some tea to calm down? I can recommend a few good blends."
A prepared and ready Megagoon team isn't anything to sneeze at, Ferra. They know there are supers on site, and the Professor has a reputation for heroism all of her own. Media's all over your new powers too so there are no surprises for them, their gear's annoyingly low-tech and unpowered. You need to take them on with just you brain and your fists and stop them from bailing the Professor into the portal.

Tell me a bit about how you do it, and the powerful blow you take in the process.

So the sucky thing about fighting somebody that has, until now, been your friend? They know what you're able to do, and they have a good idea of what you're about to do. See the climatic duel between Anyan and his mentor Soya in Swords By Moonlight 3, when Soya needs to teach him his final lesson. Soya knows the duel's coming, he can prepare. Anyan doesn't.

Maybe this isn't the best thing to flash through her mind as she steps right into the Megagoon's trap, but hey, it's the little things. The Megagoon she'd hacked, did in fact have enough counterintrusion and tech on him to keep her busy for a crucial, oh, half second. She'd gotten in, she'd gotten ready to fight, and they'd made him completely toothless. Gun's unloaded, servos on the armor turned way down, not even a smoke grenade in his equipment roster. Time for plan B. Plan B sucks. She grabs the Professor and shoves her out of the way and towards the door, ducking and weaving towards where the portal still sits open, ducking through for a desperate rush at the portal generator. Hack that, wreck that, and the Foundation is safe.

Remember how fighting friends sucks? There's a half dozen entrenched E/Maulers pointed at the portal. She makes it a handful of steps before they open fire, and she goes down, reaching for the rift generator, not sure if she got it.

Ferra Reboot In Progress
"Well... the orbital calculations would be a lot easier if I didn't have to account for the weight of all this spare ammunition..." said Professor Gears, starting to think.

But then there's the air-shattering sound of a portal opening. Howling wind and rain pour through. Suited up megagoons pile through in all directions, rifles raised. One of them grabs Professor Gears before she can react and swings around behind her, using her as a human shield while pointing her gun at you. "Autonomous Gears Project, you are hereby instructed to stand down in accordance with your contractual obligations as an asset of the AEGIS conglomerate!"

[They're trying to shift your Superior down and Freak up, accept their words or reject their influence]

[11 to Reject, cancelling influence and shifting danger up, superior right back down]

She laughs, bitterly. "I have a name. And, to put it mildly? No." She starts to glow, her own hue of blue, not Comstar's pink, and so does the one holding Professor Gears. "Let's go, I have a schedule." And launches right into the violence, appropriating a rifle and using it to disable.

[8 with the new danger and the +1 forward on engage, taking back Professor Gears]
Embodying "Superheroes are there to protect and help others" to shift superior up to a -1 and freak down to a 0. Then trying to provoke, and getting a 6 with the -1. Sadness. Potential at least?

Abilities

Super durability and strength: Ferra was designed to be a first responder to metahuman incidents. Surviving the incidents intact was an early goal.
Solid light projection: Ferra was designed to be able to make simple constructs out of light and maintain them without attention. A shield, a wall, a dome, maybe a ramp. Time will tell what she's able to make.
Thermal Control: Ferra was designed to modify temperatures of things she's touching. Melt her way through a wall, freeze a car so it stops being on fire, so on and so forth.
Sonic Blasts: Ferra was designed with the ability to use different frequencies of sound in directed bursts as a crowd control effort, as well as disabling some tech with direct damage. Also, she can sing really well.
Phasing Ferra was designed with experimental technology that can pull her resonant frequency slightly out of tune with the world: she can turn intangible, either partially or fully, and with effort can take others with her.
Machine Control Ferra was also not designed to control other machines without a desperate need and an overwhelming foe. However, she can now, reaching out on some fundemental level and compelling electronics and other machines to do as she bids.

Super-Intelligence Ferra was not designed with an absurd, worldshattering intellect in mind. Too bad for everyone else, that's how it turned out.
Solid Light Projection: Ferra was designed originally to make hardlight constructs. She's decided that body is as good as any right now.

Moves

A Mind Of Their Own: Your powers evolve and mutate. When you are facing an obstacle or threat that your powers would not be able to deal with, you can mark a condition to gain brand new abilities adapted to the situation. You lose these new powers once the danger is gone.
Regeneration: When you’re taken out, you can trigger an emergency regeneration process. If you do, your body undergoes an unpredictable transformation, and in mere moments, you’re back on your feet and ready to fight. Clear three conditions and choose three from the list below:
- Change your gender identity or presentation
- Change your physical appearance
- Forget all your lessons
- Lose an important memory of a teammate; they lose Influence over you
- Swap an ability with another one from the Newborn playbook
Out Of This World: When you plug into the cosmic aether and turn out of this world, roll +Freak. On a hit, you come to a new, interesting insight on your current situation about your current problems and situation: the GM will tell you what. On a 10+, you may also shift your labels to reflect your new learning. On a miss, you realize something dangerous or terrible: the GM will tell you what, and shift your labels accordingly.

A Blank Slate

You were created with a basic understanding of the world. When you learn something that helps you make sense of the world, write it down as a lesson. Fill in two lessons when you create your character; fill in the other two when you’ve learned those lessons during play.
- I am
- A superhero
- Always
- Never

When you embody one of your lessons, shift one Label up and one Label down, your choice. If you cause a misunderstanding, collateral damage, or unintended consequences in the process, mark potential. When you reject one of your lessons, reject its Influence as if it were an NPC. If you choose to have it lose Influence over you, erase that lesson and write a new one in its stead.
When you approach your creator or caretakers with a problem, tell them what obstacle you face or what you need to achieve, and they will offer you something you need. The GM chooses one:
• secret information
• a way to temporarily boost or expand your powers
• access to instruments, weapons, or resources
• official and explicit backing
If you accept their help, they rewrite one of your lessons for you.

Backstory

Who created you, and why?

Dr. Gears made #749, a revolutionary inventor, designer, superhero, and overall mad scientist. His designs were years ahead of their time, a self repairing, self aware robot, an artificial person built to be the best of ourselves. She was the first of a new line of protectors, first responders who could address emergencies far better than your average, non-powered individual.

Dr. Gears died in a confrontation with the Silver Royals, twenty four years ago. His secret laboratory, his unfinished projects, and the Gears Foundation, only one of which had any plans at all for his death. The foundation has slowly, methodically been going through his designs, trying to finalize, retrofit, reverse engineer, and otherwise try to figure out how to use his inventions for the public good.

How are you different from humans?

The metal skin is a giveaway, most of the time. Stronger, tougher, adaptable... no memory, and a series of directives to follow. Exactly what the directives are, other than something she needs to obey, is still being figured out.

Who, outside of your team, is your caretaker?

That'd be the Gears Foundation. Since the first invention they found that was complete and marketable was, in fact, a better mousetrap, they've got enough funds to keep operating even well into the future. The current leader of the foundation, Professor Gears (granddaughter of the original), has taken it as her mission to use the inventions for the benefit of humanity. GI 749 was activated. After it was discovered that she was a person instead of an unthinking machine by an intern with a bad sense of latin, she was dubbed Ferra.

What about humanity fascinates you?

17:24 NotFerra: I was asked to explain to Dominus why I am not "a supervillian's wet dream".
17:24 NotFerra: So I will.
17:24 NotFerra: Do you know what one of the first things I saw was?
17:24 NotFerra: Yes, answering literally, it was Sara's face.
17:24 NotFerra: But after the fight was over, and we were cleaning up.
17:24 NotFerra: The first thing I noticed, was not the damage from this fight.
17:24 NotFerra: It was the scars from damage from a previous fight.
17:24 NotFerra: And the debris from the current issue was being cleared away, and already there were repair groups working, within a half hour.
17:24 NotFerra: You, as a species, have had to deal with metahumans for over a century.
17:24 NotFerra: You have had your cities hit by asteroids, giant robots, orbital lasers, armies of mutated frogs, and on one occasion a plague of bio-enhanced goats.
17:24 NotFerra: You have then proceeded, each time, to build your cities in the exact same place.
17:24 NotFerra: Every.
17:24 NotFerra: Time.
17:24 NotFerra: You are tenacious, to the point of stupidity.
17:24 NotFerra: One would think you would have switched to a decentralized population model, or otherwise made some sort of preparation for a disaster you cannot contain.
17:24 NotFerra: But so far, you have managed to contain every single one.
17:24 NotFerra: Who would not want to watch, and help along the way?
17:24 ==NotFerra has left the chat==
17:26 Angel-IKA: wtf why do you type so fast?!

Why do you care about your team?

You mean beyond the part where they woke me from sleep mode and then proceeded to treat me as an equal instead of a "SecretaryBot" like most everyone else outside of the Gears Foundation? Nothing at all.

Relationships

-Errant is an exemplary human; they show you around and tell you how things work.

AEGIS is the best example of human tenacity that I can think of without bringing up domestication of animals. They have very limited funds, they have tenuous authority at best, and they are either hated for not doing their job or doing their job, depending on which is more profitable to the given corporation. And they're still trucking along and doing their best to save everyone.

-The behavior of Brainstorm confuses you again and again; you’re determined to understand humanity better by studying them.

Is this what Dr. Gears would be like?

-The team discovered you during the incident; thanks to them, you reached the outside world and helped in the fight. Where and how did they find you? Who gave you your first nickname?

The Gears Foundation HQ (or, more accurately, Dr. Gears' ex-laboratory) was on the edge of the area the the Martian invasion capsules had landed on, and was un/lucky enough to have one punch a hole straight through from the street to the sublevel housing #749. The team was having trouble containing the warcrawlers that were spilling out of the capsule, so they decided to have Brainstorm and Sarahphim activate any sort of defense mechanism they could while Errant was crowd control. Ferra turned out to be quite an effective defense mechanism indeed.

"You know this facility doubles as a spaceship, right?" said Professor Gears. "Or - technically it doubles as a submarine, but I reckon I can get it up to spaceship functionality. They're basically the same technology. Anyway, what I'm saying is, do you want to go to space? Mars is terraformed, albeit occupied by hostile robots. I can set up a dimensional internet port. It'll be great!"

There's definitely a little waver on that final note. She's more trying to convince herself than you.

"Is Mars more survivable than the Aegis-Blacksun merger? Probably." She agrees cheerfully. "But that'd mean we'd be over there, and not over here, helping fix the problem. Which is going to be an issue if nobody else fixes the problem, and they come after the Gears projects on Mars. Which they would, by the way, with that much power they're going to consolidate everything under one roof within two decades and then we and Sylvanas are the two groups that aren't under their control, and anybody who's driven to do this to themselves for more power," she gestures out the window, "isn't going to stop with one planet, not while there's somebody else out there to rule. SO, that's the first reason not to run."

She takes a deep breath. "The second is that I want to help. My friends are out there dealing with something. Sara's had a run of all of her doubles going at her, Euna's gone dark, Victor's on the run. And disregarding the personal aspect, there's about to be the worst version of a totalitarian society seen, ever, and I don't think I could walk away from that and stay myself. Halfwoman asked me if I wanted to leave, too, and I would love to see Mars, and I'd have loved to go with her and see the multiverse too. But I have to try to help people here, first. If you want to go still, that's understandable, if a little disappointing. If you want to help, however... a flying lab with all of Gear's defense projects, that's going to be a bit of a nightmare to deal with." She grins, vicious.
