In this world the most vicious and mighty beasts imaginable rule the wild. Humans live in walled cities, afraid to travel the wilderness for fear that they will be devoured. The god and goddess ruling over mankind, the Father and Mother, took pity on mankind because of their weakness and bestowed upon them a gift. Men are capable of superhuman strength, enough to fight the beasts, and women capable of powerful magic.
When a man who is a lover of men, or a woman who is a lover of women, is discovered they are not punished for their proclivities. Quite the contrary, they are considered sacred, and sent to become an acolyte in an abbey or convent full of others like them. It is believed that one day the great heroes of humankind will be a man miraculously born from two men and a woman miraculously born from two women. As such, romance is more than encouraged in these special schools.

Edit: A few more details about this setting. Magic, as well as men's super-human strength, is powered by something called the "pneuma," which translates to "life force." Savage societies replenish the pneuma by performing animal, or even human sacrifices. The primary society in this setting replenishes pneuma through sexual activity, hence the importance of frequent sexual relations. Just as the physical act of sex between a man and a woman creates the body of a new baby, so the passion produces pneuma for the creation of a soul. When no baby is created, no soul is created, thus sex between two people of the same gender is much more likely to produce pneuma. When someone is raped and impregnated a body is created, but, because there was no real passion or love, no soul was created, and thus the child is born soulless. Similarly, pregnancies aborted through the use of the wormwood herb, if the child in the womb had a soul, creates demons, who are hateful and vengeful about having been rejected and denied life.
