Oh, almost forgot. So, as I said, David became a Perfect due to his breakthroughs and study of Transmutation. Some of the things he has developed have actually been added to the curriculum and are now studied in 3rd and 4th year. Some of the people of 5th+ year now might have them taught to them as well, just to be up to speed. Here's a summary.
Conservative Transmutation
Normally, transmutations are performed irrespective of the size, mass, and substances of the prior and final product. However, it appears that when willingly restricting oneself to just moving around substance without any transformation, the spell resolves much faster and has a higher rate of success, if the student consciously performs it as Conservative Transmutation. Also, a perk of Conservative Transmutation is that it is permanent, transmuted objects not reverting to their initial state. Conservative Transmutation itself has three subcategories, from easiest to most difficult:
Permutative Transmutation
Permutative Transmutation exchanges objects and parts with each other. The less "bond" those objects are to each other and to the environment, the easier Permutative Transmutation is (for example, switching the two halves of a sphere with each other is more difficult than switching two free rolling balls on a flat surface). Also, the more similar the two objects are to each other, the easier the transmutation is to perform. Permutative Transmutation is wordless, but requires visualising the shape of the objects being switched with great clarity. Inner complexity of those objects, however, does not matter (a spherical ball of pure aluminium is as easy to permute as an orange of the same radius). Taught in 3rd year.
Rebuilding Transmutation
Rebuilding Transmutation requires previous knowledge and mastery of the Reducto spell. It entails casting a Reductor very slowly while at the same time performing Permutative Transmutation on the object being transmuted. It is very timing-dependent, as the Reductor must not finish or go off too quickly, and as it is going off, the transmuting must be done with quick enough thinking that the disintegrated components of the initial object do not fade away. Unlike Permutative Transmutation, it is much more useful at switching and interweaving bond parts and substances. It can be used either to combine (clash several dusts together to get a glass statue) or cleave (separate iron ore into impure iron and impure graphene, for example). Taught in 4th year.
Base Transmutation
Base Transmutation is a very delicate and intricate form of Conservative Transmutation that involves readying and recasting Reductors several times per minute, followed by Stabiliendum, a special spell researched by David that confines vapors into predetermined boxes that are invisible magical forcefields. Afterwards, Permutative Transmutation is performed on the very atoms of the resulting vapors, repositioning them into new molecules and crystals. Base Transmutation can basically create anything if you're creative enough, patient enough, and have the necessary quantities of all basic elements in the initial object. Base Transmutation is only taught as theory, to practice it, students must come to David directly. It is very rare however that one can get to learn it. In order to even begin to be able to use Base Transmutation effectively, one would need to:
1. Learn and master Permutative Transmutation.
2. Learn and master the Reducto spell.
3. Learn and master Rebuilding Transmutation.
4. Learn and master the Stabiliendum spell.
5. Learn advanced Muggle organic and anorganic chemistry.
6. Research the chemical makeup of many common items, substances and living beings.
