This is an event with particular limits. This isn't about who can manipulate the most abstract lolmadeupenergy. Its about who can balance power with tact without requiring powers to pad the areas they're lacking in. Its about choosing a few things you like, and making them work. Not shoving as much shit into a sheet as possible to make up for lack of talent.

Convenience isn't exactly a decent enough reason to not explain what a character can and can't do when there are multiple sections that are not at all necessary for a combat tournament on that same sheet, with about two or three dropdowns that aren't totally necessary, either.
Getting access to random new spells that dont have any school, archetype, or reason to them means you could do whatever. I'm not saying you would, but an opponent surely may feel that way, and doing so would nix that problem before it begins. I suppose you could just always tell the opponent what those spells/abilities were, though.
