Name: Ubauchi Akio
Age: 371 years old (equivalent to late thirties)
Gender: Male
Appearance:
Akio looks like a human in the start of his late thirties. He is about 6 feet tall and has a slender build and has a moderate muscle definition. His skin is a bit on the pale side, but not overly so. He has broad shoulders despite his otherwise skinny appearance, and has quite large hands. His body has a clean look, with very few scars and blemishes. At first glance, you would not think he was a soldier.
To go with his light skin-tone, Akio has quite a light hue of blond hair. He wears it very short, but a bit longer in the front. Despite his frail look, his hair is pretty thick. He also has a thick mustache, which he grooms properly for a pleasant look. His eyes are a bit on the small side, giving him a sort of skeptical impression. His eyes are a deep grey-ish brown.
Ubauchi Akio has been a member of the Jakakumei for a long time, and so at this point always wears the traditional uniform, which is a blue robe. Even though he buttons up his robe completely, not revealing much more than his neck, he wears a dull gray shirt underneath. He carries his Zanpakuto in its sealed form in a sheath at his waist, aside his mask. Akio’s mask is gray and covers his whole face except his mouth. It mimics the head of a fly, with big round eyes of glass stained white and a mouth-piece which is long and pointy.
(Maybe I’ll draw a picture later)
Personality:
Akio is curious and enthusiastic, but dishonest and sly. Some would say he was born to be a scientist or even an adventurer, although this never happened. He loves knowledge to the point where he will often go out of his way to get a hold of it, and is one that asks questions a lot. However, there is also a darker side to this. Akio will often lie and cheat to get to know sensitive information. You could say that this makes him more suited to be a spy rather than a scientist. Regardless, these attributes are what truly define him.
Akio's motivation to be a part of the Jakakumei is complicated, but is best understood if split into two reasons. You see, while he aspired to be part of Nobunaga's squad one day, he never came that far. After all, he never graduated the Shinigami Academy. However, Nobunaga was his greatest idol. In young Akio's opinion, he was the greatest captain among the Gotei 13, possibly even the greatest ever to come by. He was enraged at the thought of his idol being imprisoned for all eternity. This is one of the reasons why Akio joined the Jacks. The other reason was that, even at that age, observing Seireitei from the outside seemed like the perfect chance to become a truly brilliant Shinigami. Training not only for combat versus hollows, but also versus fellow death gods was something that could build Akio as a fighter and as a strategist.
History:
Ubauchi Akio was always a bit special. Many people thought that he was a broken soul - a disturbed boy. At a young age, he displayed no interest towards fellow human beings and would only play alone, even without toys. He much preferred to observe the world, investigate unknown objects and discover new activities. He was deemed autistic by the doctors in the Rukon district, but his parents frowned upon this. What their son had was obviously a great gift! He was intelligent beyond compare, and his brain had to find a use.
The parents sent him off to the Shinigami Academy using a very big part of their savings, and so his training begun. It became swiftly apparent that Akio excelled in the theoretic subjects, such as strategy, healing and even Kido. but he was lacking in physical training, especially in handling a sword. He struggled with things like Shunpo as well. Akio was getting demotivated, and after a while only a single reason remained for him to stay at the Academy - his parents' investment. All that work could not go to waste. Still, training was only getting tougher.
One day though, his battle training session was interrupted by a visitor. It was Captain Gorou Nobunaga who had come to see the youngsters train. This man spoke calmly and reassuringly, but his reiatsu revealed a different truth. This man was monstrously strong, and yet he was so calm and friendly. This man grew in Akio's mind to be his idol. It became his goal to serve him one day. Nobunaga wanted to see their training however, so Akio had to battle a classmate before him. And on that day, Akio was utterly humiliated in front of his hero. Battle was not his forte, after all. After that, Akio's motivation grew a hundredfold, and it became his goal to train his weaknesses until they were on par with his strengths.
The student was well on his way months later, when he heard the news. Gorou Nobunaga, his hero and idol; a god in his eyes, had been sentenced to the depths of captivity. And all this because of his Zanpakuto, the very ability that defined him as a Shinigami. Akio was crushed. He fled the academy and out of Seireitei's walls until it was far enough away for him to calm down. And just then, while taking deep breaths, his brethren of thought met him. Nobunaga's former squad had, just like him, fled Seireitei. And just like that, Akio became one of the members of Jakakumei. And since then, he has trained and grown up to be a rogue that should be feared.
Zanpakuto:
Kaiganukyo (literally ‘torch that reveals the truth’) is Akio's Zanpakuto. It is quite a long blade, the length of an odachi, and curved in the traditional way. The metal of the blade is quite pale, especially closer to the tip. The guard is small and round, extending forward over the wielder's hand making an oval. It is made of a bluish grey wood. The hilt is long to match the blade, and wrapped in completely white silk, so shiny that the hilt almost appears chrome. The pommel is small and made of the same wood as the guard. Kaiganukyo's sheath is wrapped in completely white silk as well, but with two metal bands around it close to the opening.
Shikai:
"Read, Kaiganukyo!" (Yomu, Kaiganukyo) Akio commands as he lays the blade over his shoulder with the edge up, and holds his sheath with the other hand at his waist. This awakens Kaiganukyo into Shikai, the released state. In this state, it is no longer a sword. The sword transforms into a lance which is slightly shorter than the blade was while dormant. It glows strongly with a brilliant white light and has ornaments some places on the surface. The hilt is now much longer and rounder so that Kaiganukyo can be wielded properly. What was formerly the sheath has now transformed into a thick book, shining with the same white light as the lance. The tome hangs in a band, with the same glow, across Akio's shoulder and chest. The lance and the book are linked together by a long, fine chain which also, not surprisingly, has the same intense glow. So to summarize, in released form Kaiganukyo is a lance combined with a tome by chain, glowing intensely with a white light.
Kaiganukyo's special powers are mainly two. Firstly, it can shoot a column of white light from the lance's stinger which does not harm the inflicted, but blinds him for a short duration. The main power, though, is the weapon's ability to absorb information from what is struck by the lance, through the book. Whatever Kaiganukyo strikes, Akio steals knowledge from, beginning first with the superficial facts before digging deeper with every blow. If another Zanpakuto crosses blades with Kaiganukyo, Akio instantly learns of the blade's power, including the forms it can take. If Kaiganukyo strikes another person, Akio learns whatever the opponent knows, starting with banal information and then reaching the dark secrets as the strikes progress. This makes Akio a fearsome opponent and a fatal spy.
Bankai: Not yet obtained
Other Skills:
Having crossed blades with many Shinigami before with Kaiganukyo in Shikai, Akio has learned a wide variety of Kido. Therefore, his repertoire with these spells is on par with a captain or even better. However, he does not possess the Reiatsu to cast the most advanced ones, even if he knows the words.
