Mona shrugs. "Something about that kid we brought in. I guess he's running tests and needs help..."

Brianna folded her arms. "For goodness sake, that subject is a write-off. If The Boss wants to use him for his own experiments so be it, but it shouldn't have anything to do with me. Doesn't he want the results before he keels over?" The elevator slid open with a 'ding' and Brianna stepped inside. "Are you coming or were you sticking around for a pleasant conversation with me?" Her tone was cold and sarcastic, but mostly she was bothered at the interruption to her work.
"The enemy...?" The Boss stared at Ambrose and nodded slowly. He takes the syringe of blood and puts a dot of it onto a glass slide as he talks. "Now, what makes them the enemy? I've come across territorial disputes before between shifters... Along with differing ideological pursuits or grudges from centuries back. I'd say that they're more prone to fighting than humans, but humans are violent all the same. I think shifters are just more upfront about it."
The Boss answered Ambrose's question first to appear kinder. "You'd think so, hm? But no, he was an intelligent man. Simply preferred the wilderness to civilisation. That is what many say." He was intrigued by the term Ambrose had used. "Brom, did you say? What exactly is that?"
"The largest animal we had here was a tiger," The Boss explains, feeling the leathery wings beneath his worn fingers. "What the scientists do to get subjects to shift... It keeps them pretty much down whilst they're chained up." He feels warm memories of his travelling days returning to him. "A mammoth, hmm? I was never so lucky to see one. Although I knew a fellow in South America who could shift into a Dodo. Practically useless, but he enjoyed it all the same." His eyes glinted for a moment. "Could I ever meet this mammoth friend of yours?" It was a poorly disguised ploy for Ambrose to give up one of his shifting friends.
Brianna leaves the room and heads to the elevator, pulling out her electronic pass and scanning it. "I don't suppose you know anything about what he wants?" she asks Mona whilst the two of them wait for the elevator to arrive.
The Boss should have been annoyed, but instead he was fascinated. Since he'd left the majority of experimentation to the scientists he had not seen shifting in action in a long time. He gasped, and plucked Ambrose off his shoulder. "Look at you!" He took one wing and spread it out. "Look at this... Ah, I haven't seen a bat shifter in many, many years. So small. That's something that has always amazed me about shifting, you know. Humans are such an average size and yet shifters capture all that they are into a body smaller than themselves. Or else they fill out their personality into a large size." He was totally enraptured by Ambrose's appearance.
"The Boss?" Brianna blinked in surprise. "How odd, he should know that I'm in the middle of an experiment..." she shook her head. "No matter. If the hand that payeth calls, I must answer." She prepares to leave, slipping on a jacket near the room's exit but gives Mona cold glare before she goes. "I assume you have something to do elsewhere, yes? Leave the girl. She'll be fine."
The Boss let out what sounded like a tiny cough of laughter. "Boy, I do not care how you present yourself or wish to be accepted. I have thought of you as nothing less than male this whole time. Why, you look like-" He cut himself off, not wanting the boy to know of his attachment to his appearance nor to remind himself of the past. "Never mind. However, no matter what you may say the blood in this vial-" he tapped the red glass with a finger, "-contains a chromosome we lack experimental data for." He walked over to a desk with a microscope on top of it.
Oh great... It's one of them. Brianna had to stop herself from groaning out loud. "Ah.. One of the family! For what reason am I blessed with this visit? And for goodness sake, the girl is simply out cold. Probably because you stuck too much tranquiliser in her." Brianna took off her plastic gloves with a huff. "What could possibly be so urgent that you drag yourself to my humble abode, hm?"
"However you act, I shall treat you. Agreed?" The Boss walked back over to Ambrose and pulled up his sleeve. "Admittedly, we are lacking in the Y chromosome department, but it does not matter so much. Our female subjects have given us less than the males so far anyway." He cleaned Ambrose's arm before sticking the needle in and drawing out the blood.
