Name: Dying Star
Race: Riftosian
Physical Characteristics and Appearance: Dying Star most often assembles itself into a roughly humanoid figure of varying size and solidity. It does not have a strict gender, but its voice is typically pitched as a low, husky alto. Dying Star arranges its components to absorb light during covert operations, appearing as an silent, looming shadow. In friendly company, it becomes luminescent, emitting light in a wide variety of colors. The more relaxed or exhausted Dying Star is, the more indistinct its figure becomes.

Maddox “Mad Dog” Wilkes, a well-known arms dealer in the Mayall II cluster and leader of the notorious C-49 gang, was found dead this morning on board his short-range cruiser. Inside sources report that Wilkes appeared to have been smothered in his sleep. High-ranking C-49 members accused rival group, Syksos, of engineering Wilkes’ assassination, but Syksos has publicly denied any connection to Wilkes’ death. Officials fear Wilkes’ untimely demise may lead to a surge in gang violence as tensions between competing groups continue to rise…

Interviewer: Col. B. Hutchison [BH]
Interviewee: Pvt. A. Tuskas [AT]
Date/Location: 1400 hrs on 4.19.3192 at Fort Adams, Vector Prime, M-319
BH: You're aware of why you're here, private?
AT: Yes sir.
BH: We just want to know what happened. You are not being held accountable for the deaths of your comrades. Understand?
AT: Yes sir.
BH: All right, son. Take it from the top.
AT: Well, sir, we were just carrying on like usual - doing our tour of the facility like we always done. Except Frankie--
BH: Private Franklin.
AT: Yeah. Private Franklin. He didn't come back that evening.
BH: So you went looking for him.
AT: Yes sir, me and two of the guys. Sergeant Wen and Private Jimenez. We go scouting around the out buildings and Joe - that's, uh, Private Jimenez - thinks he sees something over by building B-12. A woman.
BH: Human?
AT: I think so, sir. Hard to be sure in the dark.
BH: Go on.
AT: Well, we get our guns up and move in slow, telling her to come out with her hands up. And it was...it was real dark, sir [long silence]
BH: Private? You all right?
AT: Uh, yeah. I, um... [clears throat] Anyhow. We get to the corner of the building and I hear Joe make this funny noise. Like he's out of breath or something. I look over at him, and he's staring straight up with his eyes rolled back in his head. And then, bam [hand hits the table] He just drops and this black stuff comes pouring out of his nose and mouth and goes straight for Wen.
BH: Did you fire at it?
AT: Couldn't, sir. It was out of Joe and on Wen way too fast.
BH: What did it do to Wen?
AT: Just sort of...wrapped around his head and stayed there til he keeled over.
BH: So you ran back to the compound.
AT: Yes sir. I ran like hell.
BH: And what did you find when you reached the compound?
AT: I found the rest of the guys, but they were already dead, sir.
BH: So you hit the alarm.
AT: Yes sir. Then I got down behind a table with my gun and waited for it to come after me.
BH: But you didn't see it again.
AT: No sir. I reckon it cleared out the moment the siren started going. It had already got most of us, so... [long silence]
BH: All right, soldier. I think that's enough for one day. End the recording.
Equipment: Dying Star does not carry weapons or other equipment, although it is more than capable of handling weaponry if the situation calls for it. Dying Star’s killing technique relies on it getting the drop on its opponent and quickly dispatching him, typically through asphyxiation.
Unique Abilities: In addition to the more common Riftosian talents for camouflage and near-instantaneous travel over short distances, Dying Star has achieved an unusually high degree of control over its physical form, allowing it to “flow” along the ground, “pour” itself into tight or otherwise inaccessible spaces, and dissipate its individual components for short amounts of time over small distances to avoid detection or damage. Dying Star’s ability also lends itself to one of the more unique and unsettling assassination techniques in the charted systems - entering an opponent’s body through various orifices and eviscerating him from the inside out while he suffocates. Dying Star is extraordinarily agile, able to shift and solidify its form at will, and can mimic a range of voices by vibrating its components at various frequencies.
Skillset: Dying Star specializes in infiltration, espionage, impersonation, and covert assassination.
Weaknesses: Like the rest of its kind, Dying Star is physically weak in comparison to other races and will find itself at a disadvantage if forced into hand-to-hand combat. Maintaining a form solid enough to inflict physical trauma consumes a considerable amount of energy and is extremely taxing on the entity if it is forced to remain corporeal for an extended period of time. Although it is possible for Dying Star to avoid blunt force trauma by rapidly dissipating and reassembling itself, damage from high-impact weapons, such as firearms, disrupt the conscious connection between its components and effectively “wound” it. Also, going without the low-grade radiation it relies on for nourishment for an extended period of time has the same effect on Dying Star as starvation in humans.
