Bio

A writer, artist, animator, worldbuilder. In short, jack of all trades, master of some.

For the most part, I've retired from roleplaying. For quite a long time, what kept me tied to RPG was the Spam community—but even that I have distanced myself from. Now, my focus is on the writing contests.

I consistently try to write reviews for RPGC, and I consistently enter the Twelve Labours.

First labour; world of Archipelago, Jack.
Challenge: an unwelcome death.
For next entry: characterization.

Yes, yes I do.
The darkness was palpable.

A small mouse scurried as fast as he could behind the desk, but he was followed by the grasping hands of some pudgy beast. Never before had he felt such fear, such despair. Already, he had seen his brothers and sisters succumb to the horrid crushers, disguised as the rare rations they all strove so hard to store.

It was hard enough to survive on the few remains they could find, but with the constant aggression of these humans, their race had almost died out.

Pushing with his nose, the mouse rolled the glowing marble towards his youngest son, Rrish, as he felt grubby fingers grip his tail. "My son" was all he could say before being torn away from the child.

Rrish cried for hours, staring at the gap from which his father had been tugged away, almost certainly to his death. When the tears ran dry, he laid his little paws on the orb of power before him, and made his wish.

"Reverse this verse, switch the itch;
"Killer be prey, and killer be me!"

With a thunderous roar, powerful arcs of raw magic shot forth from the orb and consumed the mouse in fiery colours. It was too much for his frail body, and he succumbed to its grasp, his body burning into nothing, but his soul fusing with the orb.

A great spirit rose from the ashes, and it looked upon the villagers as they gathered from their homes in hatred. With a flick of his hand, all shrank to a tenth their size, grew claws from the mitts and ears from their skull. Fur burst from their skin, and their teeth sharpened. "When the cat's out of the house, the mouse dances," uttered the great spirit. "But the cat is in—and here come the wolves."

The small feline villagers, just now huddling together as they came to grips with their new forms, shuddered as they heard dozens of howls emanating from the woods.

The Night of the Mouse had begun.

I don't think I've ever had that repeating problem.

If my post doesn't make it through, I abandon it, and hope it shows later.
The big issue with the Heinz situation is that it is looking at the situation from a perspective that fails to address logic, and instead attempts to work of ethical and emotional considerations. As such, the answer varies greatly.

I, personally, would say that though the Doctor is cruel, and Heinz is "good", Heinz is still in the wrong.

The essential thing to grasp here is that civilization is necessarily founded upon agreements between people on what they can and can't do. Nowadays, these agreements exist as laws. Everyone living in a particular society must stand by its laws—ideally, everyone would find a society that has laws they agree with, but we all know it is highly unlikely to find such a perfect distribution of people on such large-scale groups as are necessary for the level of trade and thus civilized advancement we know have the benefit of being a part.

If the society disagrees with its laws, then those laws should be changed. For example, in this case, I assume Heinz would be an advocate for socialistic health care programs. However, because he is part of this particular society, he needs to spend money to save his wife, and thus needs to steal.

By stealing from the Doctor, Heinz has disconnected himself from the society's rules. Rules that are in place so that mutual benefit may be shared between people by pre-arranged agreements. Once he stole, he suddenly decided that he need not follow the rules, separating him from this society. If he does not have to abide by the responsibilities society places on him, he has no right to any of the benefits. It should logically follow then that absolutely everyone should have the right to steal from him.

However, because this would lead to general complications of governance, and quickly, anarchy, as people arbitrarily decide to "abandon" society, a new, essential rule had to be formed: you cannot abandon society. Once in it, you can't leave. And so punishments were created.

By stealing, he undermines society. He may be benefiting himself and his wife, but at a macro level, people will lose more than gain. If most people disagree with the Doctor's motives, and feel that Heinz should get the medicine, then the system must change. Until the system changes, Heinz is in the wrong, and damaging more people than the one life he saves.

Such sacrifices are necessary, and though perhaps distasteful, they also give comfort. Rest easy knowing lovers won't attack you on the street so they can transplant your spare organs into their loved ones, because you refused to give up something you technically don't need.
