@Angelic Rejected. 'Shadow' as a word is fine, but it wouldn't grant your character the ability to make it solid. Your character would instead be able to manipulate shadow/darkness, shelter and protect, conjure and manipulate ghosts and specters, suggest things to others, vaguely imitate things, create a reflected image of something, instill gloom or unhappiness in others, and follow others stealthily (derived all of these abilities from the definitions at http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/shadow?s=t). You can choose whether to keep 'shadow' with these adjustments or pick another word if it's not to your liking. In addition, it doesn't really make sense that your character was shocked to find that she could see the floating island. It's rather hard to miss, unless she coincidentally gained the ability to see it right then and there--which is fairly unlikely. Other than that, application is fine, but it could use some cleanup in terms of grammar (random capitalizations being the biggest culprit).
@Ether Welcome, Ether. That's why people have to submit an application for approval. There's nothing stopping people from writing those kinds of words in-universe though.

She was relatively well off in school, didn't get any bad grades, always A's or B's and always joined athletics whenever she could. She was always open to doing something to better herself either athletically or educational wise. One day, she heard about this Skyline Institute from a flyer on her way back from school and went to talk to her parents about the floating island and the school. Later on she joined the institute after some more thinking. Name: Milayou Riviel
Age: 14
Gender: Female
Appearance: Blond-white hair, medium length bangs with short ponytail. Average build, 131 cm.
History: As the only child, Milayou was showered with love and attention. Her father worked as an army engineer overseas, but whenever he came home, he did everything he could for his daughter to make up for his time away. Milayou's mother was a civil worker, working part-time at the local job training center, and often volunteering at the homeless shelter. Growing up, Milayou embraced the blended ideal of “Work hard, and be considerate of others,” passed down from her parents. Following her mother, she volunteered in for many school projects, earning many wonderful remarks from her teachers and peers. Then one day, while her father was overseas, Milayou received a letter in the mail. Her father and his squad were surveying a damaged bridge near a warzone. Unbeknownst to them, a terrorist truck, full of IEDs, attempted to cross the bridge during their inspection. The supports of the bridge gave away, and the truck crashed, setting off the entire load of IEDs. The army was only able to identify the missing squad from the damaged surveying equipment littered nearby. Several months later, Milayou's mother was stabbed by a strung-out newcomer at the homeless shelter. Despite all this, her mother tried her best to maintain a cheerful and optimistic view on life. “Good things will always come to those good at heart,” her mother would always say. Milayou, however, was not so sure.
“Why is that... when we only want to help others, but bad things still happen to us? Did we do something wrong... to deserve this?”
This question would slowly gnaw away at her.
In middle school, Milayou continued with her devoted work ethic. However, her reputation for being a hard worker followed her as well. The same tasks that she was once praised for doing, now almost seemed expected of her.
“How is could this... be fair? Did I... do something wrong?”
But it never felt like she could ask this question to anyone. Or if anyone had an answer at all.
“Did I not do a good enough job...? Was I... not considerate enough?”
Coming back from a field trip (a trip that she nonetheless helped plan), Milayou noticed a peculiar sight in the sky; a floating island.
“Skyline Institute...! Maybe if I go there... I'll know if what I'm doing is enough!”
Nationality: American
Word:“A word... to help me through the year. Ah, well... I'm always pondering, reflecting on things. Maybe... reflect?” Reflect – Milayou can reflect, or redirect entities. Uses can range from redirecting heat from a target, either heating or chilling it, to reflecting light into others’ eyes in such a way to create illusions. She is also able to create copies of existing things.
Word Location: On the back, left shoulderblade.
Abilities: Likes to watch, and is very adept at analyzing things.
Appearance: Kylie is somewhat taller than average, considering her gender and age. She stands at about 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 meters), thus giving her body a lithe and limber form. Despite her thin appearance, her athleticism grants her excellent flexibility, agility, and decent speed. Her hair is chestnut, long, and slightly wavy; when down, it reaches to just above the middle of her back. Her eyebrows are thin and arched, her eyes narrow, and her irises the same color as her hair. Her skin is pink (between pale and tanned) and, without the aid of some makeup, slightly wrinkled around the eyes. For this reason, she is rarely seen without makeup on. Her bust is small and her arms are long and thin, which contrasts with her wide hips and visibly muscular legs. She has a flat stomach, with her ribs partially exposed due to her skinniness and her unwillingness to overeat.
Personality: Kylie has an obsession with her looks that often leads to her worrying about her makeup, her hair, and her body. She is ashamed of her small bust, which is probably (and perhaps ironically?) her biggest insecurity. She is often driven to exercise and go on strict diets. She is therefore very sensitive of others’ views of her, but she has recently been trying to get over this. Kylie is a happy-go-lucky, giggly individual but her feelings are easily hurt, leading to either sadness or anger. Due to her hobbies, she has also developed a competitive spirit that emerges every now and again. She has streaks of being rebellious and irresponsible, but that’s mainly part of the altered image she has cultivated for herself due to her social life. She’s not unintelligent, but often comes across as such.
History: Kylie was born in the rich part of Chicago to a lawyer mother and a doctor father, both of whom rarely had the time to spend at home with their daughter. This led to a few issues for Kylie growing up, mainly a lack of real attachment and even slight resentment for her parents. As she grew up, Kylie took up such hobbies as playing sports like soccer and lacrosse, singing, and running. However, as she grew older, she fell in love with two activities in particular: dancing and cheerleading. Meanwhile, she grew and became prettier and more popular. Consequently, upon arriving to her private high school, Kylie had a large network of equally as popular friends. However, due to her already somewhat rebellious nature respecting her parents, as well as her friend group, Kylie quickly fell into a life of partying, drinking, drugs, coming home late, boys, and insecurities. It took her parents until the end of her junior year in high school to realize the path their daughter was going down. After much deliberation, they took Kylie to Springfield and asked her if she could see an island in the sky. When she replied that she could, her parents offered her the proposition that if she attended Skyline, she would be able to graduate without having to actually take any classes but still enter in any lucrative career she wanted. The part about not going to class appealed to her most. Well, the money didn’t sound too bad either. Her parents warned her, in all fairness, that the school is dangerous and not everyone made it out alive, but just to spite her parents, she decided she’d enroll.
Nationality: American
Word: Spirit 1) Fill herself or organisms within her range with energy, enthusiasm, happiness, and even mania.
2) Drain herself or organisms within her range emotionally, leading to more negative moods.
3) Temporary manipulation of temperament, disposition, mood, and attitude to be positive or negative.
4) Create and manipulate alcohol.
5) Summon angels, demons, souls of the deceased for aid, advice/wisdom, and protection. The capabilities of anything summoned are linked to Kylie’s energy, so the more the spirit does, the more she is drained. All spirits must be humanoid.
6) She can also summon fairies, sprites, or elves.
7) Separation of spirit from body. Kylie can basically project her conscious outside of herself at the expense of leaving her body limp, useless, and in a sort of coma (still breathing, living, etc.) She can instantly return to her body at will. If her body is disturbed she will return to her body. If she is killed, she is killed (her spirit is out of her body anyways!) As a spirit, Kylie has no influence on physical matter, but she will remember what she sees while in this state. She cannot possess anyone, read minds, inject/influence thinking. She may travel as far as she wishes, but the longer she stays out, the more energy she expends. Kylie may also temporarily separate body and spirit of organisms in her range, but only for a limited amount of time. This will never kill them, only incapacitate them.
8) The ability to "carry off mysteriously or secretly." (i.e. ability to slip away unnoticed)
Word Range: 3 meters/10 feet.
Word Location: It is on the palm of her left hand. If she holds her palm facing outwards with her fingers facing up, the word will be right-side up and can be read by someone facing her.
Abilities: I’d feel limited if I listed them. I’ll keep them reasonable, of course.
Other: Uhhhhhh. Nothing I can think of!

Name: Alice McKay Age: 14 Gender: Female Appearance:
Personality: Optimistic, enthusiastic, and puts up a facade of happiness so others don’t worry about her. Tries to be humorous and witty. History: Lead a rather normal life until 5th grade when she was paralyzed from the waist down from a car accident. While she was a social butterfly among her fellow classmates, afterwards, people only looked at her with pity or disgust for her disability. Unable to cope with the change in attitude from her peers very well, she withdrew herself from them until the end of the school year. Determined to have a fresh start in middle school, she tried to find ways to make herself as likable as she was before the accident. She found that others responded better when she made self-deprecating jokes and acted like she was full of energy and fun. Her parents were very supportive of her and researched on anything that could possibly help or improve her condition, even by a little bit. So the family journeyed all across the world, investigating and trying all of those “miracle cures”. Each of them have been met with little to no success, but the family (and Alice) still cling onto the hope that there is a cure out there somewhere. On one of these days, they came across an advertisement for Skyline Institute--a school rumored to fulfill dreams. Her parents noted the odd requirement of needing to be able to see a floating island and remembered that after the accident, Alice had reported seeing a floating island. At the time, her parents thought she had gone delusional, but now they went to Alice to reconfirm that she could see it. When Alice replied yes, her parents broke out into smiles and told her that Skyline Institute might finally be the solution she was looking for. Now, her hopes of recovery rely on the boarding school. Nationality: American Word: Wings. Can create and control wings (and fenders of automobiles). When he replied yes, his parents told him in hushed tones about a high school named Naraka, what it promises, and what it actually entails. However, his parents heard of news about an imposter posing as the headmaster, and decided against sending Naoi there. Naoi was devastated when he learned of the decision as part of him wanted to test his mettle against the other students and receive the perks from graduating. Name: Gideon Vaughn Age: 17 Gender: Male Appearance: Standing at an height of 5’9, Gideon sports dark, curly hair and pale, pallid skin. A short, stubby nose accompanies a pair of sharp blue-grey eyes and an upturned mouth. One might call this expression a “smug grin.” Moderately active athletic participation has forged a body not quite skinny, muscular, or even lanky. Personality: Charismatic and articulate, Gideon prides himself on his ability to persuade and convince. He is a passionate, powerful speaker and is practiced at exuding confidence. Gideon can be capricious and flippant, but is more often just laid-back. He enjoys messing with people and making them feel uncomfortable, or even downright terrified.
He is honorable, protective of his possessions, and dramatic to the extreme, but also gives up and changes courses easily. His decision-making is capricious-he can be rational and modest, or unreasonable and arrogant. While he’d prefer to tell the truth if possible, he feels no guilt when lying. Detests weakness.
History: Gideon grew up in a normal home, with a normal family, and went to a normal school. His life was perfectly normal. It isn’t always a person’s surroundings or past that causes them to grow up warped. Gideon was desiring something more than the world seemed to be able to offer him, and he found that in Skyline Institute. At age fourteen he learned about the school, but it took three years of research and preparation before he was confident he could enroll and survive the ordeal. He searched for many different words before settling on Bind. Nationality: American with unknown European heritage Word: Bind
Bind can fasten, encircle, swathe, bandage, tie up, fix in place, chafe, restrain, hold things in place, and restrict things. This can be done with physical Bindings manifesting, or the power of Bind itself. It can cause things to cohere, stiffen, harden, and become compact. Contracts cannot be changed, canceled, or tampered with except for under specific circumstances, and depending on whether or not the contract was made with specific circumstances in mind. All aspects of a contract are known to every party involved. Stipulations can be invoked to cause compulsions within the involved entities. For example, a ceasefire contract might go like this: John Smith and Jane Smee mutually agree to the following:
1. Contractees will not be able to harm each other for a time period of seven days.
2. Attempting to harm another contractee will compel the offending contractee to clearly and verbally warn the contractee. Additionally, the offender will be compelled to cease all word-usage for a time period of one hour.
3. Attempting to gain help in order to break the contract will compel the offending contractee break an unbroken finger joint. Continuing to attempt to gain help in order to break the contract will continue to compel the offender.
4. Attempting to make the details of stipulations 2-5 known to anyone other than John Smith, Jane Smee, and Gideon Vaughn will compel the offender to cease all verbalizations and hand movements for ten minutes.
5. The contract can be safely released with the mutual consent of John Smith and Jane Smee.
(The contract materializes on a piece of paper, although it exists merely to represent the contract. Destroying the piece of paper has no bearing on the contract itself.) Word Location: Right wrist Abilities: Knows a lot of miscellaneous information, especially about obscure definitions of different words. Other: Suggested Words to several insecure and confused-looking people around him, those Words being Rejuvenate, Heat, and Armor. He actually suggested Words to more people, but they didn't heed his suggestion.
(Source: Unknown) Personality: Reserved and distant, but Lauren opens up once you get to know her. She doesn’t like to be seen acting close or affectionate with others, since she thinks it is embarrassing. She often takes herself too seriously, and will look down on others for not being just as serious. Incompetency will also incur her scorn, as she finds it hard to believe anyone could be incompetent if they just took things seriously. She gets her serious nature from her parents. History: Raised a single child to two severe, if caring parents, Lauren’s personality became somewhat severe as well. Although her parents are both Egyptian, Lauren cannot speak and only barely understands Arabic, gleaned from the infrequent occasions her parents would converse in the language. Lauren did very well in school, pushed by her parents to succeed until her expectations of success became her own. Before her junior year in highschool, after confirming Lauren could see the floating island, Lauren’s parents enrolled her in Skyline. Lauren went along with their decision without arguing, as in her mind, the potential benefits far outweighed what she’d be missing. She tries not to think about her high school friends, or she starts to miss them more and more. Lauren just wants to get the year over with so she can go back to her “real friends.” Nationality: Egyptian Word: Transmit - Lauren can transmit objects, others, sounds, light, and forces distances. She can also transmit obligations, rights, thoughts, and feelings from one to another. Like with other Words, she cannot Transmit a Word or otherwise affect one. Word Location: Left thigh Abilities: Finds the art of judo, ju-jitsu, and other such throwing and pinning arts to be incredibly graceful and elegant. After begging her parents, Lauren was able to take classes, but the classes never progressed up to the techniques Lauren obsessively studied over and over on her own time. Other: She wouldn’t be caught dead being seen actually doing judo or the like. Far too embarrassing. Her parents gave her the last name of Zavala to sound more American.
Name: Marcus Rios Age: 18 Gender: Male Appearance: Marcus is extremely muscular as a result of intensive sports, training, and exercise. He weighs a whopping 250 pounds and is 6”6. Due to his thick beard and slightly receding hairline, he’s been mistaken for an adult more than once. He is barrel-chested, with a sturdy, powerful lower half and bulging, colossally muscular arms. He has dull blue eyes and unremarkable dark brown hair, complimented by tanned, roughed up skin. He’s a bit self-conscious about his thick neck. His body sports two tattoos, a tribal tattoo spiraling around his left shoulder and ending at his left forearm, and a skull tattoo on his ribs. Personality: Marcus is hot-headed, boisterous, and boastful at times. He loves opportunities to show off his strength and skill, but isn’t as simple-minded as one might expect. He dreams of reaching the pinnacle in something, be it professional sports, or an Olympic medal. Inevitably, Marcus’s focus on athletics caused him to fall behind in academics. Marcus is unsure whether he he does poorly in school because of his focus on sports, or if he prefers sports because deep down he knows he’s inherently stupid. This inner conflict is a source of sudden and explosive anger when brought up by someone, inadvertently or not. History: Born to a an affluent and proud upper-middle-class family, Marcus’s parents, a retired NFL player and an NFL cheerleader, raised him to be the ultimate sports star from the moment he was born. Basically bred for sports, Marcus’s parents were even able to shenanigan growth hormones to administer to Marcus while he was in middle school. While normally used to boost stunted children, in this case it gave Marcus an edge against other students. Although his parents pushed Marcus hard to achieve in athletics, Marcus himself enjoyed physical challenges and didn’t hold anything against his parents. He dominated in every area of every sports he applied himself to. His parents urged him to go to Skyline Academy for a year because while he had scholarships lined up for most every major college, the prestige from graduating Skyline would expedite the process of joining a professional sports team. Nationality: American Word: Strength-Marcus can increase the toughness and strength of himself, objects, and materials. He can also strengthen “moral power, firmness, courage, mental power, force, and vigor." Word Location: Right bicep, facing outwards Abilities: Excels at most physical activities, and is skilled at a large number of sports and martial-arts.
Personality: A calm and open-minded young woman, Reina prides herself over the fact that she is quite adaptable to new situations, people, and activities. Her secret lies within her love for knitting. Leading a tranquil lifestyle, Reina is able to maintain a relatively optimistic outlook on life and a somewhat clear mind even in the midst of chaos. However, she isn’t the type of girl to take up any kind of leadership role. She tends to take the backseat when it comes to important decision making, contributing only when necessary. In fact, Reina isn’t much of a social butterfly. Preferring idle chitchat over long narratives, she manages to multitask her knitting along with other activities, such as chatting, simultaneously. History: Reina was born as the second child, or middle child, to two loving parents. Growing up in the shadow of her elder sister, while also competing for the attention and affection of her parents with her younger sister, Reina received the short end of both sticks. Stuck in the rut between needing to achieve more, yet less in order to fit within the distribution hierarchy of love and affection, Reina struggled to retain her position. As a result of compiled years of pent of stress and fear, Reina’s academic and social careers suffered, dropping so drastically that her middle school’s guidance counselors were forced to intervene and recommend a new path for the floundering adolescent. Swiftly diagnosing the issue and its source, the middle school counselors determined that the most effective remedy that they could offer to the young girl was the comforting advice to find a soothing hobby or activity to placate her nerves. With no better options, Reina gladly took up the suggestion, taking up knitting and related diversions; she practiced her new-found interests so much that they practically turned into compulsive hobbies. A problem, as it may seem, such as this could easily be overlooked, since Reina did proceed to show a positive change in her academics (the social aspect, as the counselors predicted, would take a bit more time). After resting on her rekindled laurels and regaining her self-confidence bit by bit throughout her remaining years of middle school and first few years of high school, Reina finally decided that she should challenge herself a bit more. Her elder sister had already been accepted to many prestigious colleges across the country, setting the bar for her siblings very high. Aiming to shoot just as high and hopefully land high, like her sister, Reina jumped at the opportunity presented by the flyer to attend Skyline Institute. Having heard of the many great accolades achieved by the graduates of the school, Reina itched at the chance to prove herself once more. At first a bit bemused by the requirement of having to be able to see the floating island in the sky, Reina didn’t think much of it, seeing as she could view as clear as day for as long as she could remember, and eagerly persuaded her parents into letting her attend the promising school. Nationality: American with a faint, almost nonexistent trace of Native American blood Word: Thread - upon seal activation, a spool of thread materializes and can be manipulated at will. Thread can be controlled up to 5 meters and can be influenced to coil, grasp, entwine, tie, pull, throw, protect, deflect, and/or attack any object, living or nonliving, within the associated range. Thread can be cut, burned, and destroyed by any means; however, lost thread is regained after each new materialization (each spool containing about 10m of moderately thick thread). Also, thread from other objects, such as clothing, can be manipulated too; however, not necessary when Reina can simply materialize more thread via her seal. Word Location: Palm of left hand Abilities: Not really abilities, more like hobbies; Reina loves to knit, crochet, weave, draw, read, and hum in her spare time. It brings her solace, even when facing great adversities. Other:Theme

Name: Bran Pyrrhus Age: 16 Gender: Male Appearance: Brown-skinned, fluffy but short loosely curled hair, baby-faced (appears 12/13), 5'8" (173 cm) Personality: Stubborn, honest to a fault, always seeks to help others at expense to himself, often analyzes but sometimes misses crucial information, always has something to prove History: Bran's family has always had a rough time. When his father's law firm was dissolved as a result of internal corruption, his family was ousted onto the streets when he was only four years old. The family hopped up and down the coast and tried to find a new place to settle, but no one would take a risk lawyer with a bad history, especially not in an economy as bad as it was at the time. This meant Bran had to move between schools a lot, so he never really had any friends. The only things constant in his life were his family, his music, and the surf which always made him feel at home. He never really cared about the impact he left on the places he visited, so his actions often had troublesome consequences. In one instance, he turned a school pool into a wavy mess by inserting a homemade waterproof speaker at the bottom. Just to see what would happen. Labeled as a troublemaker, his thoughtful mind went unappreciated, so he continued to keep to himself. When the instructor told him to write down a word, Bran went with the one thing that remained with him in the absence of his parents: the waves of sound and sea that had been his accompaniment his whole life. The Skyline Institute is Bran's chance to restore credibility to his family name, set himself up for life, and prove to himself that he has worth all in one year. But it's going to be absolute hell if God's Blight has anything to say about it. Nationality: United States of America Word: Wave The word wave will be used as described by the following definitions: noun 1. a disturbance on the surface of a liquid body, as the sea or a lake, in the form of a moving ridge or swell. 2. any surging or progressing movement or part resembling a wave of the sea: a wave of the pulse. 3. a swell, surge, or rush, as of feeling or of a certain condition: a wave of disgust sweeping over a person; a wave of cholera throughout the country. 4. a widespread feeling, opinion, tendency, etc.: a wave of anti-intellectualism; the new wave of installment buying. 5. a mass movement, as of troops, settlers, or migrating birds. 6. an outward curve, or one of a series of such curves, in a surface or line; undulation. 7. an act or instance of waving.
The word's impact will therefore be the following: 1. Emotional manipulation: "WAVE" will create an electromagnetic pulse blast that manipulates the minds of those within the 5m radius to feel the emotion that Bran wishes. This involuntarily works on both allies and enemies unless protected by a surface that inhibits EM signal progression. Best used on a large mass of enemies to make the backfire on allies worthwhile. It can also short out electronics within the initial radius or travel radius if Bran does not terminate the signal in time. 2. Light Manipulation: "WAVE" stimulates a stream or instance of photon bursting that can be anywhere on the electromagnetic spectrum. Because "WAVE" only controls the wave-like properties of photons, Bran cannot alter the collisions of the particle-like properties of a photon, although the strength, speed, and frequency are within his control. This means that it is possible for his projectiles to completely pass through an opponent that is invisible because he cannot alter the collision properties to make them visible by bouncing the photons back. 3. Sound Manipulation: "WAVE" adjusts the density of the air surrounding Bran, which can pass messages far away or, if close (within the initial 5m radius), cause a pushing or cutting wind. 4. Water Manipulation: Similarly to sound, "WAVE" will manipulate the density of areas of water in order to cause a shift in the liquid's movement, thus creating current and waves. 5. Solid Manipulation: Sound travels fastest through solids, and this wave motion slams like a truck. Can split imperfect surfaces (). NOTE: All of the above are projectile motions in one way or another because of the traveling nature of waves. The 5m radius is where the instance begins, but it ends whenever Bran stops sending his thoughts to the affected body of matter or stops sending out electromagnetic instances. The above applications are listed in rising order of energy consumption. 6. Special Technique- Mass Motion: Excuse the pun please. "WAVE" combines aspects of the above powers in order to maneuver matter in waves around him, whether in a singularity or an outward pulse. Because this is a combination ability, its use causes extreme exhaustion and is best used as a finishing move.
Word Location: Center of the chest Abilities: Above-average speed, excellent endurance, tactical mind Other: Weaknesses include stubborn nature, visual impediment (requires thick glasses to correct vision to 20/20), pitiful physical strength

Name: Alexander Lee
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Personality: Alexander is quite intelligent, being able to make calculations in his mind very quickly. He is particularly well versed in the fields of mathematics and physics. He is generally a well-mannered guy, and will be friendly to most people he meets. However, it may still be best to stay on his good side. You may not want to know what happens if you don't.
History: Alexander is the firstborn child of 3 children, the other two being twin sisters. Alexander spends his time dealing with the annoyances of younger siblings while still working to achieve high marks in school. Fortunately for him, his hard work (and the fact that he could see the island) got him rewarded with an acceptance into Skyline Institute. With an offer to get any job he wanted after he graduated, and only after 1 year as well, how could he miss the opportunity?
Nationality: Chinese
Word: Vector. Alexander is capable of altering the direction and magnitude of objects, as well as applying more or less force onto objects. For example, someone that threw a rock at Alexander would find their own rock launched back at them just before it reached Alexander. As an unintended side effect, this also grants Alexander control over certain disease-carrying organisms, such as mosquitoes and ticks.

History:
Born from a American father and a Japanese mother, Ray was more or less an outsider in Japan. Although it didn't bother him much. As his father tried to push him into the direction he wanted, his mother on the other hand told Ray to follow his own dreams and be who he wanted to be. With this a struggle between his mother and father broke out, after a few serious fights and didn't end well. Within the fight, his father had grabbed his mother, and as she tried to get away from him, tripped and bashed her head against the coffee table. His father got arrested a few days later, questioned and released again. Although Ray didn't wanted to do anything with him anymore, and tried to get away as far as possible from him! With this, Ray applied to Skyline in the hopes of never returning to him again!

Blight Compendium:
Day 1
Name: Blight Monster Attack Type: Fixed Word: Monster Description: Monsters attack the students in the classrooms. Disappears after a half hour. Their speed is on the faster side of jogging speed, and can put on fast bursts of speed when attacking or lunging. They can jump decently high (about 3-4 feet) but cannot fly. The word ‘monster’ can be seen on them.
Welcome to Skyline Institute, a boarding school that is said to fulfill dreams. At the very least, upon graduation the student would be free to choose whatever job or occupation they wished. However, just as things rarely are what they appear to be, Skyline is not your average high school. Any prospective students must be able to see the floating island in the sky in order to be enrolled. And within the school year, students must undergo many trials called ‘eclipses’ or ‘blights’. Many die, and it is not unheard of for no one to survive until the end. The students must try their best to persevere using their word power, a single word that each person chooses to rely on.
(Note: This is an Aphorism RP, but some things have been changed. Everyone is free to join, and reading through the entire manga isn’t necessary. It may help with understanding the RP more though.)
School:
The school is set in Springfield, Illnois and mimics Japan’s Naraka High School. Unlike Naraka, Skyline also accepts international students. The only requirement for getting accepted into the school is being able to see the floating island. Graduating from the school allows the student to pursue any job or career they want afterwards. The school and graduates are supported by the government, who is fully aware of what goes on. The school is only for one year, and students are split into eight classes of 25-30 people each. School colors are sky blue and white.
Standing at the front gate of Skyline, the school appears to be very far away. However, once a person walks through it, they are transported to another dimension containing the school. Students cannot leave due to a barrier that surrounds it, nor can the barrier be affected by word powers. The outside of buildings are indestructible and the inner walls regenerate after being destroyed.
On weekdays, students normally go to homeroom at 9:00 am, and then are free to attend to any lesson they so desire. Each day, teachers will teach the same subject every hour until 3:00 pm. So other students who go to class for another subject can still take the lesson they missed. Students are allowed to request other subjects that aren’t provided by the school. The school doesn't force their students to take any lessons since the only requirement for graduation is surviving until the end of the year.
Three meals are served each day, students can choose whether or not to go to all of them. But the food is high quality, a small reward for surviving each day.
There is an infirmary for people who are injured during blights. The staff there can help with normal injuries, but can’t regrow an arm or the like.
Dorms are separated into male and female. Each dorm room will be shared by two students.
The headmaster of the school enjoys watching the students struggle against the eclipses (and in general). It is rumored that the headmaster controls the blights, but he is protected by four powerful guards. Guards also double as enforcement of the school. While there isn’t a rule against killing other students, anyone that starts a massacre will be killed by the guards. The headmaster also has the ability to use all words.
There is no way to leave the school aside from graduating.
Transfer Students:
(Important if you are joining in the middle of the RP)
Transfer students would go through the following steps:
1) Getting accepted into Skyline Institute after they applied. Remember that one of the requirements into getting in is being able to see the floating island into the sky. Also note that most people do not know of the true nature of the school. Only those that have done very thorough, extensive research (a simple google search would not tell you) or know people that have graduated have a possibility of knowing.
2) Handing off luggage to security before entering through the school gates. Once in school, a guard will escort you to your teacher's office. (When I accept applications, they will include a class assignment that will be decided using a random number generator unless there is a lack of students in a particular class.)
3) In the teacher's office, the teacher will hand your character a piece of paper and ask them the question in a certain way (see the RP for their personalities and wordings) depending on the teacher.
4)Your character will then write down a word and be instructed to say the word out loud.
5) Once your character does, he or she will feel a burning or itching sensation for where the word appeared. That signifies the word ritual is complete. The teacher will then hand your character an envelope with their class assignment written on it, along with room information and key.
6) Have fun!
Important: Transfer students may only join the school in between blights. They may not transfer if a blight is currently going on.

Words:
On the first day, all students are instructed by their teacher to write down one word that will help them fight or survive-- something they’ll rely on. When they are finished, the teacher checks all of them to make sure they are all one word each and appropriate. Then, the students are told to say the word they’ve written down out loud. Upon doing so, the paper disintegrates and the word appears somewhere on the body.
Words take the form of either a word picture
or in a fancy font. The word grants you certain powers related to it and marks you as a fighter during blights. If the student destroys the mark, the word will appear elsewhere on the body. It cannot be erased until you graduate.
If you wrote the word ‘sword’ then you will be able to create a sword based on your imagination, if you put ‘fire’ then you can manipulate fire. However, words are limited by their meaning, so if you have ‘sword’ and imagine a sword covered in fire, it wouldn’t work since ‘sword’ has nothing to do with fire.
Words can be used in different ways depending on all of its definitions. For example with the word ‘light’, a character could manipulate light or make him/herself lighter. For consistency’s sake, the definitions used will be from http://dictionary.reference.com/. Archaic and slang definitions are also allowed.
When using a word, one must understand its true meaning and have a clear picture of what they want it to do. Otherwise, it’ll backfire on the user. When a word backfires, it will either fail or harm the user with the word. Example: If ‘strength’ fails, the user will become weak. Utilizing a word naturally drains mental stamina, depending on the amount of concentration it takes to use it.
When manifesting a word, it must abide by the most common societal instances that the word’s language originates from. For example, ‘sword’ can only create a sword of some form of metal, foam, or plastic (and other typical materials). Society does not typically see swords made out of anti-matter, fire, lightning, or plasma. So words materialize at their normal temperatures (most likely room temperature) and he/she can control its movement afterwards. So ice cream would be created at a temperature below freezing and living creatures manifested would be at their normal body temperature. As for fictional constructs, it will function as intended but not gain any special abilities unrelated to the word. For fictional living creatures, the word will take liberties with the biology (such as a dragon with two hearts and one lung) but it will still be able move and live normally. Creatures that have a basis in reality will be created with normal biology. When the creator or summoner dies, all of his/her constructs disappear as well. In addition, characters cannot create an object or living being when the space is already being occupied. Example: If 'sword' tried to manifest a sword in someone's body, it would fail.
Word usage range is typically the radius of the person’s sight. When a person uses their power outside of that range, it has a higher chance of backfiring because of the imagination required. Usage is also limited by knowledge, because one cannot imagine something he/she doesn’t know of. Example: ‘Strength’ cannot strengthen something in another room over if the user does not know the thing exists.
There will be hard range limits on characters with powerful abilities (or instant effect abilities) such as, ‘kill’, ‘disappear’, etc.
Eclipse/Blight:
An eclipse happens when the floating island blocks the sun from the school. Eclipses happen randomly, excluding nighttime and cloudy/rainy weather. Words that create weather will stop eclipses inconsistently. When there isn’t an eclipse, students have classes like a normal high school student. Blights typically occur 2-3 times a week. A blight may last several days if not dealt with, and will sometimes grow stronger.
There are four different types: fixed, normal, isolation, and special.
Fixed blights - only happen on certain days Normal blights - can happen whenever it isn't raining Isolation blights - only happen when the number of students is divisible by three. The students will then be transported into a separate realm in groups of three. They must pass a test set by the guardian of the realm together in order to exit. If they don’t finish within the time limit, they will disappear with the realm. Special blights - happens randomly and continues until either all the students have died or it is cleared. They do not get cancelled by rain in most cases.
Eclipse Monsters: Enemies that spawn from the eclipse will only attack those with a word. The enemies will have different forms depending on the seal they're governed by.
Rules:

FAQ:
Q: “What happens if I write more than one word?” A: The ritual will fail and your character will probably be eaten by monsters.
Q: “What if I write a word like ‘the’?” A: If your character somehow bypasses the teacher’s check and completes the ritual with that word, then congratulations. You now have a useless word.
Q: “What if I write something like ‘God’?” A: Pronouns don’t work and the ritual will fail. Have fun getting killed in the first blight.
Q: “Can I make multiple characters?” A: Feel free. Just make sure you actually use them.
Q: “What if I write on two slips of paper?” A: Whatever word you speak first will be the one your character is marked with. Unless you have two mouths or something.
Q: “Well, what if it’s the same word on two slips of paper?” A: Only one of them is used. The other just sits there as a normal piece of paper.
Q: “Can my character have multiple words if s/he has multiple personality disorder or bipolar disorder?” A: No. First, the proper name of multiple personality disorder is dissociative identity disorder (DID). Second, although people suffering from DID have multiple personalities (called alters), it is still all one mind and one body. The only way DID would affect the word power is if an alter is more creative, more imaginative, more aggressive, etc. In the case of bipolar disorder, that’s a mood disorder characterized by periods of mania and depression. There’s no reason why the person would get more than one word because of that.
Q: “Is there mana?” A: No.
Q: “Can I use a word from a different language?” A: No. Stick with English only.
Q: “What's stopping people from writing super broad words like object, structure, weapon, or energy?” A: Using some of the super broad words are fine, depending on what they can do. Me and the moderator(s) will also be checking the applications to make sure no one word is too insane. We will either suggest restrictions to the word or ban it entirely if it's too much.
Q: "Will you reject an application solely because of its grammatical errors?" A: Nope. I reject based on whether or not they meet the necessary requirements and if they simply make logical sense. That being said, I will reject an app if the grammar is horrendous enough. And if an app is rejected, I may ask you to polish the writing a bit more as well.
Q: Do you have room for more people? A: There is always room for more people. :) There are mechanisms in place for people to join at any time (transfer students). Depending on how far in the year we are by the time you join, your character may have to stay another year at Skyline in order to graduate.

[Derek]
You return to your classroom with a large stash of weapons.
"Report, Samantha?"
"Everything has been relatively quiet. There have been a few objections though. We have them tied up and put in the corner over there," Samantha replies expertly, pointing to the upper right corner where three students laid, restrained.
"Good, good. I shall deal with them later," you say approvingly. You pick up a can of soda and toss it over to her. Samantha catches it and nods appreciatively. _She has decent reflexes. It might be time to train these guys up soon. But first..._ You store the newly acquired equipment into the cabinets but hold onto a cheese grater. Afterwards, you saunter over to one of the tied up students and roughly drag one of them into a connecting office. _Let's see how well this works.._ You put the kid on the table and tape him to it, preventing him from squirming too much. Grabbing the cheese grater, you run it over the boy's arm. It shreds the skin and blood begins pooling down onto the table. The boy lets out a scream and writhes in pain. You repeat the process over the same patch of arm, eliciting another scream from the boy while he redoubles his effort into twisting free from his binds. You laugh maniacally, "Don't worry, we're _far_ from over. This is just the beginning."
You scrape up the student's entire right forearm until it is an unrecognizable bloody, mangled mess. _It wouldn't do for him to die from blood loss after all._ His shrieks of pain and terror were music to your ears though. Your ears pick up on a faraway scream, coming from MST. _I'll have to go investigate that._
"Nicholas, Lauren, you two are coming with me to do some reconnaissance. Do _not_ reveal your presence to anyone nearby. Keep behind me. Ariel, Samantha, make sure everything stays quiet until I come back," you order. _Leaving the twins alone together would be unwise. Since their loyalty is clearly to each other first, and then me._
You turn towards your group, "Let's go," and start stealthily making your way to MST.
Irene- A normally kind and generous person that only has everyone's best interests at heart. She switched over to being cold and calculating after recognizing that emotions would only hinder her goal of everyone's survival. Helping with breach effort. Planning as usual.
Derek Galton Strasser- Gleefully killing zombies and people alike. Frolicking in power. Investigating disturbance nearby MST down.
NPCs:
Sam White - A naive, innocent freshman that was persuaded/manipulated by Irene to help out with repairing the breach by acting as the decoy. Died when Irene pushed him out of the window and got brutally torn apart by the zombies below. Rest in pieces.
Nicholas Jackson - Derek's first recruit and right-hand man. Joined Derek because he'd have the freedom to behave however he wanted. Power hungry. With Derek.
Samantha Croxen - Second to join Derek's group. She accepted that Derek was currently the strongest entity in the school and that following him was the best chance for her survival. Doesn't care all too much for Derek's goals though. Supervising classroom.
Ariel Knox - The more brute-force emotionally driven of the twins. Joined Derek after being unable to withstand the thirst and hunger. Currently the only one in Derek's group that has killed another innocent human being. Supervising classroom.
Lauren Knox - The more cool and level headed thinker of the twins. Went over to Derek for food and water. Reluctantly followed him after her sister was roped in. With Derek.
Notes: Strike-through indicates deceased characters.
You let out an exasperated sigh as Matt leaves the media center. How are going to get everyone in the media center at the same time if people keep leaving?you think, rolling your eyes. You notice Phillip enter with Sam, slightly distressed with taking care of him. You let a small grin form on your face at the sight. And then Ben rolls into the media center, covered in dried flakes of blood with Alicia following him. You shake your head, amused. I wonder if we should just start with who we have now. I guess I'll wait some more though. You sit down with your back against the shelves and closes your eyes, drifting into a half-asleep state. ((Note, this is before Matt gets back))[Derek]
You slaughter several zombies along the way to get to MST to encounter a large horde of zombies milling about. "So, what do you think we should do?" you ask the twins. I already have a solution in mind, but this is a chance to see how they operate. "Jumping into a horde like that would be suicide. So we should catch the attention of a few zombies and eliminate them like that," Ariel responds. Not ruthless enough. Yet. "Or," you propose, "We could simply have a decoy distract them." "But who would be a decoy?" queries Lauren. "Watch and see," you comment, strolling over to a classroom, unlocking it, and grabbing the nearest student. You tell that class that it is of the utmost importance to borrow the kid right now. The class replies with feeble, apathetic answers. The boy you are holding shrieks, "What are you doing with me?!" "Hush," you say, placing a hand over his mouth to prevent him from making too much noise. But it's too late, the zombies have noticed you and start shuffling at an alarming pace. "Now look what you've done," you say in a bored tone, "Oh well. It's not like this wasn't going to happen." You pin him to the ground and cut through one of his calf muscles. Then you pick him up and shove him in the direction of the zombies. He starts screaming and tries to run up towards the back stairwell, the horde closing in on him fast. "Quick," you say to the Knox twins, "Follow me." They nod, faces paling, and chase after you as you run towards the culinary science room.
In the room, you start searching for the keys to the knife cabinet. You rifle through the teacher's desk and drawers and finally find what you're looking for. You start unlocking all the cabinets and tell the twins to go search them. Walking over to the knife closet, you begin shoving all the cleavers, chef's knives, bread knives, and other assorted knives you can find into your backpack. You also pick up three cheese graters, two can openers, and a handful of corkscrews. Ariel questions, "What are the cheese graters for?" You reply, smiling gleefully, "You'll see. And have you guys finished scouring the area for weapons?" Lauren replies, "Yes. And I thought a metal pan might be of some use as a weapon." You glance down at the pan in her hand and shrug, you don't care too much what your subordinates used as long as they weren't too powerful. "How are we going to get back?" Ariel prompts, noticing the number of zombies outside returning slowly to the amount they were before. "I can deal with those numbers," you reply confidently. But a series of distant gunshots ring through the air before you attempt to exit. Who else would have a gun aside from Vitale? Police? No, considering Mr. Vitale said there wasn't going to be any support from the government anytime soon. Which means...adults. Parents with children in this school most likely. The gunshots will draw the zombies away from this area at least. Although I wanted to kill more. Oh well. There will be plenty of opportunities. "Let's use this opportunity to get back," you say to the twins and exit the room.
