"There is no need to worry Ryder, when Master Sylvain and I created the spell, we made sure to take your hexes into account. There should be no issues."

Master Zayla smiled at Liah's comment. She was also someone who cherished her sleep. "We will need you to be ready within the hour. They will be a carriage to take you all outside of Isunia and into the nearest village, but after that I'm afraid you'll have to go on foot."

"You will not be allowed to fly." Master Lyndel added. "You'll be too noticeable."

"If you do not want to be hexed then you may leave." Master Emmaline told Sidney. "The hex should not interfere with your fighting capabilities." She looked to Master Isac for confirmation.

Master Isac looked offended. "Must everyone question my abilities today? These kinds of hexes are my specialty. There will be no problems. If there are," He shrugged, "Deal with it. Now if there are no further questions I will explain how the hex works." This will be a binding hex. There will be several rules to follow. If any of the rules are broken, you will put under a paralysis spell that can only be broken if at least two other party members place a small drop of blood on the hex mark. These rules will apply even in death, which means should one of you die, you'll have to carry the body with you. I imagine that will be highly inconvenient, so don't die. The rules are as follows. 1. You must stay within 500 feet of your fellow party members. 2. You must stay within 50 feet of at least one party member. This will mean you will have to stay in pairs. 3. You cannot injure another member of the party and 4. You cannot teleport. If there are no further questions, step forward and I will cast the spell."

After Master Isac cast the spell, they were instructed to be prepared to leave within the hour. A carriage would be waiting for them at the city gates. Once they reached the city gates, they were to talk to the inn keeper to learn the exact location of the stone and get supplies. They were provided with nothing but a travelling clock (enchanted to keep the wearer warm in the cold and cool in the heat), water skins, and two tents.

"One more thing before you go," Master Emmaline told stopped them right before they left. "There will be one more student joining you later. Her name is Esperanza Ciervo. She will contact you through this scrying mirror. She handed the mirror to Finlay. That is all. We will be waiting for your return."
"It seems everyone is here First, apologies for calling you here so late." Master Emmaline said, "However, this is a matter of utmost importance. I am sure most, if not all of you have heard the rumors already. Mana's Heartstone has been found. As you are aware, this is an incredible powerful relic, and if it falls into the wrong hands, it could cause the continent to fall into chaos. Luckily, an Isunian contact has managed to get ahold of the stone already. Your mission is to go retrieve it, and then bring back here to Isunia, so it can be destroyed."

"Of course we can't trust all of you." Mirella looked at each them, her expression showing that she trusted none of them. "To ensure none of you betray us, Master Isac will be putting a Hex on all of you."

"Are there any questions? If not, then please step forward so Master Isac can cast the hex." Master Lyndel gestured to the front.

"I need to cast it on all of you at the same time." Master Isac said standing up, "So decide quickly if you're going to accept or not."

Emrin carefully looked around her. She had already guessed what the mission would be when she signed up for it, but she wasn't about to risk her life if she didn't think her party would be reliable. It was of course, reassuring to have Liah and Liam, whose skills she was familiar with. The other three though, were strangers to her. They seemed capable enough though, and she trusted the Masters' decision. "Other countries are bound to have already made their move to retrieve the stone. Do you know who and how many?"

"It seems Draesa has already dispatched a unit. They have most likely dispatched a team of elite mages." Sylvain told her. "However, their numbers will be small and we trust in your skills. We are unsure about Soria. Yoendra for now, has agreed to allow us to handle the matter. However you must still be careful bounty hunters and rogue mages."

Emrin took a moment to think it over. "I trust in your judgement Masters. I will accept the mission."
The 10 Masters of Isunia sat at a semicircular table staring at the images of eight students floating in front of them. It was the early hours of the morning; most students had long gone to bed.

"Are we all in agreement that it will be these eight?" Emmaline asked.

"I still think they are too young," Zayla said, "But they are the best of the volunteers."

"We've been over this a million times," Abindra replied wearily, "The other countries will be less suspicious of a group of students than they would a group of professionals."

"They are skilled enough," Sylvain said. "But not so skilled that we would have to worry about any one of them taking the stone for themselves."

"As long as Isac does his job properly."

"Excuse me! When have I EVER failed at this kind of work? These kinds of binding hexes are my specialty."

"That's enough! Are we all in agreement then?"

The Masters all nodded and Abindra waved her arm and the images disappeared.

"Then I'll summon them right away." Adrissa closed her eyes, sending out a telepathic summon to the students.

"Most of them will be asleep now. Shouldn't we go in person?"

"Not to worry. I made sure to make the message loud enough to wake them."

Emrin had been working when the message came booming into her head. COME TO THE MASTERS' ROOM NOW. The shock caused her to knock over her third (or was it her fourth?) cup of coffee all over the notes she had been painstakingly making. Emrin swore loudly and cast a spell to dry the papers, but in her tired state, only succeeded in blowing them off her desk and scattering them about her room. Emrin sighed and rubbed her eyes tiredly. What time was it? Late. Or early, depending on how you saw it. She quickly gathered the ruined notes and stacked them in a messy pile on her desk. She'd have to wait until her return to deal with them.

Emrin entered the Masters' room and bowed politely, trying not to let her annoyance show on her face. Master Sylvain saw her disheveled state and grinned, "Another late night Emrin? I hope we didn't interrupt you." Master Sylvain was the only professor teaching Rune Theory at the university. He knew all of his students well.

"No worries, Master Sylvain. It wasn't important." She replied curtly.

"Take a seat," he said gesturing to seven chairs arranged in front of the Masters. "You're the first one here."

Emrin Carth

art by guweiz

Age: 19

School Year: 3rd

Specialty/Apprenticeship: Magical Research

Magic Affinity: Runecrafting

Magic Class: Runecrafting
Runecrafters already have a smaller mana pool than average, but Emrin's is especially small. She makes up for this by specializing in spells that are built on top of others' spells to strengthen them. She will also write spells for other people to activate/cast. Emrin is slightly obsessed with efficiency and always makes an effort to cater each of her spells toward each person. The better she knows your magic, the better the spells she writes for you will be. She also adept at shielding. In order to save mana on her shields, she specializes in making very specific shields that can only block one or two things. Emrin uses a staff for a casting aide and her element is air.

Home Country: Yoendra

Personality: Emrin is extremely pessimistic. Her motto is that you have no expectations, then you will either always be right or pleasantly surprised. Among the other Runecrafters and her classmates, she is somewhat infamous for constantly scowling. She is very blunt with her words and doesn't hold back on what she thinks. She has an obsessive personality and often will focus all of her attention on her current project/task at the expense of other things in her life, including her own personal health.

Emrin loves magic and is fascinated with the way it works. Her goal is to eventually become a magical researcher at Isunia, and possibly, eventually, a professor. She is an extreme perfectionist when it comes to spells, and so only has a single shielding spell carved on her staff. She is constantly revising spells to make them as efficient as possible.

Notes:
  • In addition to her staff, Emrin carries 2 mana stones and a flying stone with her
  • She always carries a journal and pen with her just in case she can't work out a magical calculation in her head.
  • She does not eat seafood
  • She's fairly skilled at combat with her staff. Since she has very little mana, she thought it was important to be able to defend herself should she run out

History:
Emrin was born to an average middle class family in Yoendra and her life was fairly uneventful. Her parents discovered she was a Runecrafter early but did their best to keep it hidden, in fear of slave traders. However, when she was 10 years old, her neighbors sold them out. Her home was attacked and the slave traders captured her after killing her parents and younger sibling. Luckily, she was rescued by Isunia before she could be sold, and has since lived in the school.

For the first year or so, Emrin resented Isunia for not coming to help her earlier and possibly saving her family. However, she has since grown to think of Isunia as her new home and is now extremely grateful to them for rescuing her.

Relationships:
Liah and Liam Gibbs - Emrin became friends with Liah first, and then through her, met Liam. She considers both close friends
