My bad. In that sense then absolutely.
@CyanideSweetie

That could be possible in multiple ways. Through subtle inducing of hallucinations, for example.

Turning a large group of people into mindless, subservient zombie-like servants would be less possible.
House of Powers

Premise/Summary

Below is a narrative introduction but first: a summary! As the title suggests, this is a RP about people with powers/special abilities. These may vary from regenerative abilities through to telekinesis. It is set in the modern day and the characters will be young adults (early twenties, specifically 20-25). Everyone's characters will start out weak and slowly grow in strength as the RP progresses. They will not have even been aware of the existence of powers before they enter the facility where they will awaken them (to be clear, they do not currently have any powers). Example: If your power is telekinesis you aren't going to be flinging large objects at people. More like knocking over cans in a shooting gallery. With your mind.

This is a reboot/rewrite of a successful RP from Old Guild and had several parts but I'm hoping to have a new cast with new characters and so a new story will unfold (although I am of course happy for returning players to use their previous characters).

Without spoiling anything, this RP has quite a long and very changeable plot.

Introduction

You had been feeling ill for a few weeks but thought little of it, the flu goes around and around this time of year and surely you just fell victim to one of its many strains? Yet, here you are, whisked away from your home, or the doctor's office, or from your workplace, by an anonymous task force dressed in full body bio-hazard suits who insist that you have no normal illness. Your illness heralds the coming on of powers, inhuman and never before known powers, and you have been taken to a secure facility in which to safely develop these, they say.

Scarcely can you believe it, so fantastical is the tale that has been weaved for you. They tell you that others before you were less lucky, not reached in time and their power grew beyond their subconscious control and wreaked havoc on themselves and their surroundings. One would be sceptical, in this situation, if it were not for the chance you have been given to call your family who explain government representatives have informed them of the situation. You are safe here, in this facility, where you can be trained to develop your power so that it is no longer a threat to you or others.

Once this is done, the symptoms of your 'illness' will recede and you will no longer be infectious, a threat to others. So you are resigned to this temporary life, away from your friends, family and home in a luxurious facility specifically designed to accommodate your every need until it is safe for you to return to society.

And yet you cannot help but feel that something is not right. Perhaps it is because you feel ill, because so much is going on around you which you do not understand. Maybe you have just seen too many superhero films and the situation you are currently in never works out well for the heroes involved. Still, things are never quite what they seem. Especially when dealing with the complete unknown of Empowered Humans.

Character Sheet

Name:
Age: 20-25, a date of birth would be ideal. This will be set modern day, we'll say 7th November 2017 as the start date
Gender:
Sexuality:
Appearance: Picture/Photo/Description or a mix, I'm not picky as long as you're happy it describes your character as you want it to.

History: Self-explanatory, any details about their family life, education, work experience etc.

Power: the all important part! Best to be general here to start with, for example telekinesis, control of electricity, super strength etc. We can go into more detail as powers develop and the characters come to understand their powers a little better. Remember that they will start off very weak, almost the point they barely noticed they had a power at all and it will slowly develop as time goes on.

Please add in any other details you feel are relevant/necessary for your character.

If you have questions/suggestions/ideas feel free PM me or post in the thread. If you want to go ahead and make a sheet, I won't stop you.

Oh, and rules...

The usual things. No over powered characters (unless I give permission!), no abuse in the IC or the OOC, be nice to one and another and if you're going to be really nice to one another then fade to black and take it to PMs. That said I'd like to think we're all fairly sensible here and I'm pretty chill about most things.

I will work out a Skype chat or something similar if people want to have a platform for random chatter outside of the constrains of the OOC.

Random things from the RP as it stands and as it comes to me (unashamedly recycled from previous incarnations)

As she helped Reese up a tall soldier approached, older and his insignia proclaiming him to be a member of the Survey Corps. Lauren felt like saluting the man, with so many questions instantly buzzing around in her mind, but he spoke to Reese, giving the young man some advice. Then he looked between the two he nodded, said something that felt Lauren feeling like there was something that she was missing in the conversation, and then left. With a sigh, having missing the opportunity to ask her questions, she resumed her stance opposite Reese.

"Sure, once you've done it a few times it'll come to you easily. I guess over the next few years we'll have a chance to properly master it, I don't mind giving you some one on one lessons, if you want." She grinned, shifting her feet a little and watching Reese' body respond as he mirror her movements. "I'm not all that experienced, my Ma was in the Garrison and she insisted I know a bit so I guess I'm a little ahead of some of you."

She darted forward, watching him shift before slipping in under his guard and starting to perform the same manoeuvre. This time, however, she stopped once she had him firmly in her grasp, ready to be thrown over at any point.

"Your footing's a little better but you're still too tense, it makes it easy to knock you off balance. See where my leg is? If I move like this..." She shifted her leg back so that his own balance was knocked off further. "Then your footing goes and I can do whatever I like." She retreated, letting go of his wrist and jacket, dancing back a few steps and taking up her stance.

"Now you go. Take it slow if you want, to get it right. Once you've got the basics down you can just flow into it. There's a lot more moves Schulz showed earlier but I prefer this one, there's less chance of hurting someone but you can easily disable them. Also..." She nodded towards Gabriel and Grant who were sparring nearby, "it doesn't really matter how big the other person is, in fact it works better if they're taller than you."

They sparred for a bit, changing it up a little with some simple boxing and trying out a few other techniques Schulz had shown them. Then Schulz ordered them to switch and Lauren disengaged from their current match, breathing more heavily than she had expected; she and Reese were well matched in strength and speed, in fact probably had the edge, and her lead in experience had quickly been eroded.

"I think I'm going to be exhausted by the end of today. Take care, Reese! Oh, and don't go too easy on Mora. She may be hurt but she'll still send you flying!" She gave her friend a wink, hopping over and tilting Mora's head up a little before the girl could respond, to examine the marks on her neck. "I think we're okay. Don't go straining yourself though. Reese, can you avoid her neck if possible? And don't go hurting him, I don't need more patients!" She grinned at the pair before turning to see who her next opponent was.

Upon seeing the towering Gabriel she winced a little. While what she had said about the throw to Reese was true, she still didn't relish the thought of sparring with someone clearly much taller and stronger than her, especially when she was tired. She also had a sneaking suspicion that Gabriel was either a quick learner or had some experience, she wasn't sure what gave her that idea as there hadn't been any signs but she headed over towards him prepared for a tough session. She nodded to the two in greeting.

"Hey, Gabriel, Grant. Whenever you guys are finished, I'm ready. No rush."

Morning: @wolverbells@Ambra@HecateProxy Training Fields: @Solace

As always, Lauren was up before the crack of dawn. She had gotten used to not sleeping much, with her work as a healer requiring her to be gathering herbs and preparing medicines early before distributing them to her patients before they, too, had to go to work. It helped that her alcohol-induced, dreamless oblivion of sleep was deep enough that she required relatively little of it to keep her going. Before anyone else was awake she snuck to her medicine bag and began to take out a few things, namely a roll of bandages for Jade, and a variety of herbs and pestle and mortar.

Working quietly, so as not to wake the other girls, she prepared some of the ointment she had given Mora the previous night, having used much of it up and foreseeing the need for a fair amount of it in the near future. Once the other girls were up she caught a still-sleepy Jade and wrapped the bandages tightly around the girl's chest and ribs, occasionally observing the bruise and prodding her ribs to see where the pain extended to, before chasing Mora down for a quick reapplication of the ointment for her neck.

There was little time before they were called to the first training exercise. They all stood eyeing up the harnessed ODM gear, hanging in such a way that even a minor imbalance would cause the wearer to topple over onto the ground with absolutely no dignity still intact; it would require near perfect balance to stay stable.

After several trainees embarrassingly faceplanted the ground, either through being nervous or just having poor balance, some of the cadets began to get used to sitting in the Gear. Although they weren't entirely stable they weren't immediately falling over and with practice it was clear they could get used to it. Jade went just before Lauren and she watched with concern as the girl was clipped in and then raised off the ground. She held her breath but her small friend didn't fall over, managing to stay upright if with difficulty.

Lauren stepped in next, the building sense of anxiety from watching the others near bursting point but she calmed herself down, reminding herself that Ma had done it and had expected her daughter to follow her in the military; there was simply no way she could fail here. The clips were put into place and then she felt the belt tightening as the harness was pulled up until she was dangling off the ground. Immediately she was having to concentrate hard on maintaining her balance, trying not to move too much while finding a comfortable stationary position. Before she knew it she was being lowered back down so that someone else could go and she walked away, frustrated at not having mastered the gear just yet.

Then they were onto hand to hand combat. Here, at least, Lauren felt that she had some experience in the area. It was old experience, things Ma had taught her years back, but even if her mind was a little foggy on the specifics, her muscles remembered as she dropped into the stance Schulz taught them and went over some basic techniques. While she hadn't been drilled in them for long, she probably had a better understanding of the techniques than the other cadets.

Her first partner was Reese, a boy she remembered a little from before the attack but had never really known well. She was taller than him and they were of similar weight but it was clear he had a slight edge over her in muscle strength, even if it was only minor. Smiling she waved to him as she approached, taking up the stance Schulz commanded they use.

"Hi Reese! I'll go first then." She didn't give him much warning and darted forwards the moment he'd taken up the stance, dropping down a little and sliding her foot between his, nudging back his left foot to upset his balance a little. She took a hold of his right wrist in her left hand and grabbed a fistful of his jacket above his right breast, using her own momentum as she twisted to move his off balance leg off the ground and then pulling on his wrist and jacket. With his weight off centre she easily threw him over her shoulder and onto the ground flat on his back.

Straightening up she rolled her shoulders, regretting the lack of a proper warm up but then that was a realistic scenario. She walked back to her starting position and resumed her stance. The throw had felt natural to her but she was already chiding herself on how disjoined her movements had been, resolving to try and do all the actions at once so that the force of the throw was that much greater and that from start to finish complete more quickly.

"Sorry, I guess I should've given you more warning. I get quite competitive with these sort of things. You go first this time. I won't just stand here though." She flashed a grin at the smaller boy. Despite the inevitable injuries she'd be having to treat earlier, mostly from cadets not performing the techniques properly, she was going to enjoy this session although she suspected she'd be the one on the floor more often than not by the end.
@LetMeDoStuff

And you still made it here to post, that's take the British Stiff Upper Lip to a whole new level.

I hope you recover soon.

Yes indeedy.

Directly: @wolverbells@HecateProxy@Ambra Indirectly: everyone else

Everyone was mingling beyond the group which they had turned up in and, normally, Lauren would enjoy navigating the social circles and engaging with the new people she'd be working with in the coming months and years. Now, however, she felt her energy dipping and heavy weights of depression pressing down on her shoulders and mind. She nodded to Grant as he sat down but didn't introduce herself, fearing that the changes in her tone would give away her mood.

Mora had noticed the change in her friend, that was easy to see by the frown on her face and Lauren cursed herself for not being better at hiding her emotions. She appreciated her friend trying to bring her back in the mildly festive mood they had going on but she couldn't break free of the shell closing around her and there was only one way out that she knew of.

Standing up she nodded to the table and forced herself to speak as upbeat as she would normally.

"I think I'm going to head to bed. Today's been a bit exhausting and there's no telling what'll happen tomorrow." She slipped out from the bench, lightly squeezing Mora's shoulder in thanks for her efforts as she passed, and saying her farewells to the others in the Mess Hall. A few were outside talking but they took little notice as she headed for the cabin, trying to keep her pace normal rather than rushing to sate her craving.

Once inside she glanced over her shoulder to make sure that no one else had followed her lead before shutting the door and scurrying over to her medicine bag. A few of the bottles were unmarked or simply had 'For pain' written across labels stuck to the front in her own, flowing handwriting. Unstopping one of the larger ones with hands shaking from anticipation she took a long pull on its contents, letting the liquid roll down her throat and igniting a fiery aftertaste as the strong spirit flooded a gentle numbness through her veins.

It had been a while since she had felt such an intense need for a drink and she feared that being this close to everyone from Shiganshina, Mora especially, would increase her dependency but there was no other way. It was the only way she could sleep at night and there was no way she was abandoning her closest friends because she couldn't cope with the trauma. As the guilt and shame at her dependency hit, so did more flashes of memory, memories she'd rather forget and so she took another drink. And another. And another.

Eventually, the memories stopping coming and left her in a blurry, peaceful state. Stopping the bottle back up she slid it into her medicine bag and reached for the skin of water from before. She took a quick sip and then popped a mint leaf in her mouth, chewing it so that it masked the smell of alcohol on her breath before taking another drink of water. Putting the water back, she climbed into bed, collapsing down onto the pillow and letting total sleep take her.

@wolverbells@HecateProxy@QT@SheriffLlama and everyone else, although not directly

Lauren watched with interest as Sano up and left quickly, seemingly flustered out of his by-the-book persona by Jade's questioning. Remembering the fact for later reference, she nodded to Connor as he joined them, although the boy also took off shortly to talk with the other tall boy of their group who lingered in the doorway. She could see something had unsettled the tall boy but she didn't know him, certainly not enough to inquire as to what was troubling him.

"No need to rush things Jade, there'll be plenty of times to flirt - I mean talk - with him." She laughed, her mood improving from its brief moment of sourness with now Ra teasing her, challenging her to make good on her threat. "Oh, you think I'm not serious don't you!"

She delivered the spoonful of soup carefully to Mora's mouth and stared the girl down until she swallowed it, quickly refilling the utensil and holding it up and meeting her friend's gaze. "Come on, lots more left!"

She paused for a moment, flashing back to when she had done something similar for little Atticus. Pa had been out and left Lauren to care for him, although they had lived together for a year already by that point so it wasn't that unusual for her to be caring for him alone. He was barely a toddler at that point and insisted upon being fed with the aid of a variety of sound effects. Then her mind made the next link, one she spent most of her time avoiding and was drove her to coping method most, to Cain. Mora was Cain's brother and there were obvious familial similarities in their faces, her memory overlaying with the present to the point she could see both of them in front of her at once.

With a force of will she shook herself free from the disturbing illusion and smiled, continuing the playing with their food. More than at any point that day she was craving for some of the deliberately mis-labelled bottles in her medicines bag, suddenly desperate to drink herself into a sleepful stupor and erase the memories bubbling just below the surface. For a time, at least.

Seemingly, by arriving first, the girls had become the rallying point for the other cadets. They were soon joined by several of the boys, all the familiar faces plus some new ones taking seats around them or even joining them at their table. Sano sat down on the other side of Mora, Lauren studiously began to eat her 'soup' rather than say anything. There were several conflicting flavours, none of them particularly appealing, but it was filling and she'd certainly had worse in the time after they fled Shiganshina. Two years of testing herbs and medicines had also somewhat numbed her to bad tasting food; as long as it wasn't poisonous then she wasn't going to have issues eating it.

It was when Sano apologised for the boys being in the cabin that she couldn't help herself any longer and put her bowl down slowly.

"Actually, I invited one of them in. They were both patients under my care and needed a quick check up. Since I've been 'assigned' as the medic but not given any proper facilities as of yet I needed to operate out of my cabin. Thankfully they didn't need any real taking care of or else they may have suffered lasting damage from their treatment being interrupted." The gaze she cast at Sano couldn't quite be called a glare, she was not aggressive enough in nature for that, however it was certainly a look of disapproval. "In future, when I'm treating someone then come hell or high water, they are under my care and I will decide what's best for them."

In the back of her mind she knew that she was being hypocritical, calling out the boy's attempts at leadership on the first day as excessive by responding in kind but it irked her that her actions had been indirectly called into question; it insulted her notion of professionalism. Thankfully, other spoke up and soon they were all united in struggling with the difficult aftertaste of the soup. Mora gave up on her soup, pushing the distasteful meal away and begging for water.

"Alright, although you'll need to eat some more of that. You can't heal on an empty stomach." She nimbly extricated herself from the table, and the group, and retrieved a large skin of water and several cups before returning to the back of the cabin and distributing the drinking vessels around. Jade blurted something she couldn't quite hear at Sano and, despite herself, she grinned mischievously at her small friend's awkwardness. She was standing behind her so only Mora would be able to see her expression and could share in the amusement.

The water and the cups handed out, she slid back into her seat on the other side of Mora and pulled her own bowl back and quickly polished it off. She looked sternly at her two friends and nodded at their nearly untouched bowls.

"We've had worse, wash it down with the water. There's no telling what the Instructor will put us through tomorrow and I doubt the food is going to get any better so we'll just have to get used to it for now." When no one responded she reached for Mora's bowl and dipped the spoon in for a substantial portion. "I swear, I will force feed you this. Don't make me do the flying noises I have to for Atticus, y'hear!
