Sounds cool. Definitely want it to be human.
Callum Algard

Callum thought that his companions' reasons were all rather interesting. Sophia wanted power. Power for what, she didn't quite say. By the way she spoke, she didn't sound like she came from a poor family. If anything, her speech reminded him of the various books that he read, where everything sounded formal and manufactured. Perhaps she was well off enough to get a proper education, and perhaps she just wanted more. He supposed it didn't matter how much you had; so long as there was something you didn't have, there would be want. Leonardo's answer was very interesting. Just what kind of favor did he want to ask of The Dragon? Callum was insatiably curious, and was about to ask him, when the beast-kin spoke up.

He cocked his head slightly and gave her an odd look. Protect her village? Were there really no soldiers where she was from? Or were they what she was trying to protect it from? She was a beast-kin after all; maybe it was a territorial thing. Either way, he couldn't blame her if she wanted soldiers gone, especially with the way he'd seen them treat her kind. Then she turned his own question on him. Funnily enough, he hadn't given it much thought.

"Hmm..." he said, leaning back in his seat with his hands folded behind his head. "Well, I read this book one time. There was this story... or poem, or something -- it was in a book -- and it was about a guy walking down a misty path. As long as he stayed on the path, he was safe, but there were monsters in the mist that would devour him if he strayed. Anyway, he could just barely make out a path in the mist branching off of the one he was on. However, the man decided to keep going straight, fearing that the path would take him deeper into the mist. He died knowing nothing but the mist, and on his death bed he wondered if that path would have lead him out of it. I'm going left." Callum nodded, thinking that it was a satisfactory answer, though really he probably made the least sense out of all of them.

Callum's jaw dropped once he got a good look at the inside of the carriage. It was disorientating at first, and he poked his head outside to look at the carriage, then back in to make sure he wasn't crazy. "How the... right. Magic." He shook his head and rubbed his eyes, then leaned back on the seat. It was the first time since he left home that he actually had time to relax, and he finally felt the exhaustion take over him. He sank into his seat, rubbing his shoulder and stretching his neck. "Ah, so this is what sitting is like," he said to no one in particular. "I almost forgot what it feels like." He laughed a little then turned his attention to Leonardo. "Some water sounds great."

He took his cup of water and chugged the whole thing in a single gulp, then smacked the cup down with a satisfied "Ahhh..." Thus refreshed, he gave another look at his companions. They were all seeking training from The Dragon, so they would be his classmates... or colleagues... or whatever they would be called. He should try to get to know them at least a little bit, even the beast-kin. "So," he began, "what made you all decide to seek out a castle in the middle of nowhere to study something you might or might not be good at?" Was it a bit cynical? sure. But it wasn't like being overly optimistic was going to change the results.

@Eklispe
"Sounds like a good idea," Callum said, certainly eager to cover as much ground as possible. "I'm running kinda low on supplies anyway, so getting there sooner rather than later is good for me." Running low was an understatement. His flask had about a swig and a half of water left in it, and if they didn't run into some fresh water, he'd probably pass out from dehydration. But, for now he was still standing, so it was all good. He also noticed that Sophia seemed to speak in a more refined fashion. Perhaps she was from the city and actually got a proper education. The prospect was interesting and he wanted to question her about it, but before he could, a carriage pulled up to them.

Callum stared at the golem, mouth agape. Was that wooden man talking? "Uhh..." He was to bewildered by what he was seeing to give an intelligible response at first, but he snapped back to reality when he realized he was about to let a free ride to the castle get away from him. "Y-yes! The Dragon, yeah, we're going to see him." Then came the warning of all the magical beasts. Callum swallowed hard. He and Sophia were just about to march into their own graves. Without another moment's hesitation, he clambered onto the carriage, only to see the two people he had just met a couple of moments ago. "Looks like we lucked out," Callum said to no one in particular, though he did seem to be avoiding looking at Hilda. Sharing a ride with a beast-kin? This would certainly be an awkward next couple of hours...

Callum took a moment to survey the people whose paths now converged. His attention was immediately drawn to the beast-kin, some kind of moose lady, or something like that. He instinctively took a step back from her. The soldiers on both sides would always warn the villagers to keep their distance when they walked a prisoner through the streets. Apparently they were supposed to be dangerous and could turn violent in an instant, just like a wild animal. It was the one thing both sides agreed on. Of course the only beast-kin he'd ever seen were battered into submission and dragged along in chains, so he'd never seen them do anything violent. And, judging by this girl's timid demeanor, he didn't think she looked anywhere close to snapping. Then again, maybe it'd be best to keep his distance for now. "Uh, thanks, but I'm fine," he said, turning down her offer of apples. In truth, all he had left was some soggy bread, but he was no worse off now than he was some winter nights at home. He knew hunger, and he knew he'd be fine until he reached the castle.

He gave the artist a nod, but decided to follow the blond. Even if they decided to stop, there was no reason to dawdle on the road until they found suitable shelter. His boots squished and squashed as he fell in with the blond. "Gotta say, I'm kinda glad some others are looking for The Dragon too," he said, offering her a friendly smile. "I'd feel like a real jackass if I was the only one knocking on his door and got turned away." He gave a small chuckle. Being turned down was a grim thought, as he'd gambled quite literally everything he had on this, but it was beyond his control, and all he could do at this point was laugh at the prospect. "My name's Callum. I'm from Cedarburg, a village in Voston... or Stairia... Whatever they're calling it now. Kinda goes back and forth."

Despite his exhaustion, Callum was happy to be back on land. If the seas had been kind, Callum couldn't say. All he knew is that he still felt a rocking sensation even when standing on flat ground. He hadn't been afforded the luxury of a bath since he departed, so his hair was unkempt, his skin was greasy, and he was pretty sure he smelled like salt. At least his fingers weren't pruned anymore. His feet on the other hand... His boots squished with every step. Despite draining them before coming back on land, his work as a cabin boy had left them rather soaked. Hopefully, he'd have time to let them dry when it came time to let them dry. He glanced at his crude map, and then looked at the scene that spread out before his eyes. A big grin spread across his face; it was real.

The Dragon's name had popped up in various books, but all Callum knew thus far was his reputation. Greatest mage in the world, apparently. Part of him wondered if he would be turned away before he even met the man himself. After all, what would the world's most powerful magic user want with a disowned peasant urchin? He shook those thoughts away. He didn't come this far for nothing. Then, he noticed that his path was converging with four other travelers. It seemed like quite a coincidence for several people to be meeting up at once. Before he could get a good look at the other travelers though, a huge dragon swooshed overhead. Callum instinctively flinched and stared at the beast as it soared off to the mountains. "They're real..." Callum muttered, mouth agape.
