'Cause grapes aren't ripe until late summer and the vines itch like crazy anyway. Blackberry bushes get too prickly. And orchards are great until you accidentally roll onto a recently fallen apple or pear (ow.) Pumpkin patch? Same problems as with grapes, only itchier.

Plus, I like strawberries.
In a bracken of ferns, surrounded by conifers and far from civilization... the smell of fresh loam mixing with the scent of the flora, ozone and rain lingering just after a storm has passed... Or making love in a strawberry patch in June beneath the full moon...
At least you know what a P-38 is, so that make me feel slighter better.
Do they even still issue P-38s?
God, I just realized how old I am...
They were what you used P-38s to open. Meal, Combat, Individual. They were basically glorified C-Rations. No M&Ms or candy bars. The one set of meals gave you either a poundcake, a cinnamon nut roll, or fruitcake and YOU DID NOT WANT THE FRUITCAKE!! I always wondered why the Accessory Pack was opened when I got them til I figured out he was taking out the cigarettes before sending them to me. One time he managed to get me some rats from the Canadian army - at the time, I thought it strange to have ham and beans for breakfast.

Wait, wait... MREs come with heating packs now??
I still miss the MCIs my uncle used to snag for me. (Laughing) To be honest, I thought they were better than MREs as far as taste and texture, even if they were bulkier and heavier. Mmmmm.... the canned cinnamon rolls were the best!
Oh wow. That looks... I'm not even going to go there. I think your description says it all! (Shudders). Although to this day the words "beef stroganoff" still make me queasy.
Hey, I used to eat MREs and trail food prepared by 13 and 14 year old Boy Scouts. Coffee grounds in cold egg noodles would be nothing compared to some of those dinners. I remember the morning having to *drink* my pancakes...
For a second, I thought that read you were pounding coffee into stale Chinese food...
