It's probably the teeth thing.A lot of people don't show their teeth when they smile, especially if more reserved by nature (or simply reserved when on the spot, or feel as if they're imposing too much).Like most of the time when I smile I don't show my teeth, you have to be making me laugh for my teeth to show (Or I'm purposely making a very creepy/disturbing smile). And being raised around odd people such as "vampire people" tends to produce odd people. And if showing teeth was something she learned culturally to associate with a negative, it's no surprise that she's reluctant to show it. Or associate it with something positive.Though, I'm simply trying to find a rational/explanation for Henry's reasoning here. I fully admit Henry's off, and therefore no defense I can give is bound to make perfect sense. Except to Henry maybe.

Except the weirdest part is that, despite this argument, she still does show her teeth... sort of. But, like, only the top row. Really it just looks like she's raising her upper lip.

So I don't even know why she's presenting such an argument as if that's the problem here, which it's not. @_@
Posts for the others will come in good time.

And "good time" can mean anything from later today to, like, Thursday, depending on how things go.

Sorry.
GM’s eyes stayed locked onto his holo-screen as Leon babbled and stammered nervously. While he seemed angered at first, his menacing demeanor seemed to slowly shift into sadness and despair as he continued to stare, almost seemingly tuning the boy’s words out. “Bah… Bas…” he whimpered quietly, before he shifted back into his humanoid form as he lunged at the computer. “Bassiiiiiieeeeeeee!!!!!” he wailed, shoving Leon away as he cradled the device in his arms, seemingly on the verge of tears. “What happened to yooooouuuu?!” he screamed, looking straight at the 2D screen as the hologram plastered itself all over his face. He then realized what Leon had just done, and he turned his head to see the large lizard-man standing tall next to him.

“Bassie?” he whispered, sounding surprised that the creature could even be there. He quickly rose to his feet, looking the green man in the eyes… only to see said eyes staring blankly ahead. The creature stood as still and as lifeless as the hologram that depicted him, as if he were nothing more than a life-size, flesh-and-blood version of the same model. GM seemed confused, until he looked back down at the computer screen, and saw a small error window. “Oh, yeah, I forgot…” he sighed, crouching down in front of the thing to X out of the tiny window that said something about some file that couldn’t be found. “That’s why I never tried that before…” he trailed off, seemingly now ignoring Leon completely as he looked sadly back at his reptilian companion; the creature’s only movement being its own, slow, calm breathing.

GM then waved his hand in front of Basilix, causing the creature to change from his more monster-like form to his more human-like one… Except, instead of the form that he was used to seeing, Basilix transformed into whatever fun creation Leon had left it on when it auto-saved.

GM jumped back in surprise, swiftly yanked out of his melancholy mood, as the anger began to flare up inside him again. “What…” he started to speak, breathing heavily again. “What did you do to him?!?” he roared, before, in a panic, diving for the laptop again, and returning to the tab that housed Basilix’s other form, spamming ctrl + Z as if his life depended on it. Each change undid itself on the hologram and, in unison, on the living creature itself, as he stood there, not reacting, not even flinching. Until, as GM undid the last couple changes, Basilix apparently lost his balance, and, after a few weak, instinctual attempts to catch himself, the creature toppled to the ground like a rag doll, and just laid there, still staring ahead with the same frozen expression.

GM flinched when he saw Basilix fall, but he relaxed slightly not long after, as the lizard seemed to be fine, and GM was able to reverse all of the changes made. He let out a brief sigh of relief as he saved the file, then closed up his laptop, walking back to the reptile on the floor, just staring at him sadly for a few seconds. “Sleep.” he commanded, watching as Basilix’s eyes closed and his muscles relaxed, mouth hanging open as he quickly drifted off. GM kept his eyes locked on his sleeping pet for a few more seconds before, slowly, he turned back towards Leon, eyes burning with an intense rage as his hands clenched themselves into fists. “Now then…” he seethed. “What… the hell… did you think you were doing?!

Maybe she just didn't think she smiled naturally? Understands what it looks like, but has no idea how to imitate one when asked.Plus eyes do tend to get bigger when one smiles, but not enough that I'd call it a notable feature.Or something to explain away Henry's tendency to have super-wide eyes.I don't know, like I said I may just not be grasping it right because I haven't seen this smile myself.Does she recognize a smile when she see's it on someone else though?Because honestly, this sounds more like a case where she just thinks that she specifically isn't capable, but understands what a smile is.And because she thinks she isn't, she tries very hard to overcompensate for it.

I would assume that she can recognize a smile on someone else, though I don't understand how, seeing as how she doesn't understand a smile as I describe it to her.

Like, she was surprised to hear that you're supposed to show your teeth. She said she thought that "showing your teeth is a sign of aggression". And I was like, "Well, yes, it is... among chimps, and probably some other ape species, but not among humans, generally."

She then said that the reason she thought that showing your teeth implied aggression was because, in her hometown, she used to hang out with "vampire people" who would hiss and "bare their fangs" at people. She then demonstrated what this looked like. I then told her that while teeth are involved in that gesture, it still looks nothing like a smile.

That, actually isn't that bizarre (at least compared to most Henry things... Maybe I'm just not grasping the bizarreness of this cause I haven't seen this 'smile' myself).A lot of people (Me included) can't force fake smiles, it requires the actual feeling to be there.Henry's just sounds like a more extreme version of one with a bad fake smile. Maybe she's trying too hard?Maybe that's just how her personality compensates for a smile when the natural happiness isn't there?

I don't think you understand.

It isn't a bad fake smile. It's a million miles away from a fake smile. It does not at all look like what a smile should look like. (Like, why does she feel the need to open her eyes super-wide?). And she also wasn't aware that the thing that she does when she's genuinely happy is smiling. It's like she legit does not understand the concept of smiling.
...Did you just attempt to make a joke response to your own post?

So I think I may have found someone as much of a pacifist as Vash. Think I should bring him in?

o.o I think he would love to have someone he can relate to and agree with, for once.
So today I learned that Henry just cannot make a fake smile. And when I say that, I don't mean that her fake smiles look obviously plastic or fake, or they look dull and unenthusiastic. I mean that she seems like she legit does not understand what a smile should look like. It's like she's some sort of alien from another planet, attempting a smile even though the idea is completely foreign to her species, and her face isn't meant to morph itself into such an expression. Because when she tries to smile, she looks like some sort of rapist clown. It's hard to describe everything wrong with her not-smile; the easiest thing to point out is that, for some reason, she opens her eyes really really wide. And I... don't know why she thinks that people's eyes widen when they smile. And, here's the craziest part about this whole thing, I've seen her smile before. With, like, a normal-looking smile. And, she doesn't even know when she's smiling.

Like, when I tried pointing this out to her, she started laughing at my attempt to explain it. So then I was like, "That! That there - what you're doing right now! That's a smile!"

And her response was, "What, no, that's just the face I make when I'm really happy or when I'm laughing about something."

She then claimed that she never realized that she ever smiled when she was happy. She always just assumed that she was never able to properly smile. However, she never knew that her fake smile was outlandishly creepy or bizarre. She says she always thought that she had a mostly neutral face - like she never showed very much emotion at all. I don't see how she came to that conclusion, as, in my experience, most of her facial expressions are fairly average.

Also, I tried taking a picture of her while she was doing her fake smile, because she wanted to see what it looked like (and for some reason she didn't want to use a mirror...), and, the weirdest part is, in a picture, it doesn't look all too weird. It looks fairly close to your average smile. It's only in-person that it looks creepy.

At least I helped Henry understand why her job interviews weren't going all too well.
AAAAAAAAAH.

I watched most of that video not entirely understanding what to think of it. It wasn't until the very end that I understood the reference. AND THEN I FREAKED OUT.

That's great to hear, I hope this stupid site settles down. I have posts I've had to set aside, worrying things get trippy. -sighs- But it is a big relief to have us all on the same page again!

Well I mean, even if the site ever goes down when you want to post, you could always just save your posts on Word or something until you can get them up.

ALSO you can do what I do and keep a bunch of tabs open as a sort of "to-do" list with all the posts you need to respond to. The ultimate plus side to this is that you have all those IC pages loaded and ready to go, so that even if the site goes down, you can still look back at the posts you want to reference so long as you don't refresh your other tabs.
