Klaus wasn't sure what kind of reaction he'd been expecting from Mytchel, but it certainly wasn't that. The servant positively quivered at his offhand remark. They stared at each other for a long moment, during which Klaus wondered if he should pat Mytchel on the shoulder ("You're magical! Congratulations! Sorry, were you not aware of this?"

And then the dark-skinned servant departed, without even filling Klaus's drink. He regarded his empty goblet with a disappointed look, then started when a heavyset woman dressed in black called out to him in a tone Klaus had only ever associated with thieves masquerading as prostitutes.

Klaus turned and subjected Ghisronia to the same full-body inspection that Mytchel and Lily had involuntarily received, tilting his head in a birdlike manner as he examined her. He'd passed over her at first in his magical sweep of the room, but upon closer inspection, there was a faint touch of magical ability about her. Certainly not a shape shifter. Parlor tricks? Healing magic? Klaus considered asking outright, but after the servant boy's startled reaction, he decided against it.

"I can't help but shake the feeling there's something more to you, sir."

What an odd thing to say. Then again, it was somewhat refreshing not to be in the company of scholars who both a) knew exactly who he was, b) knew exactly what he'd been banned from Highmont University for, and c) wanted to ask him questions about it.

"Just a man who enjoys his sprouts," he said, waving his fork at her.

He was about to launch into another tirade on the health benefits of eating your veggies when the copperhaired girl, the one who practically emanated "shapeshifter", whispered something to Ghisronia. From his end of the table, he couldn't hear what they were saying, but he got the faint impression that they were talking about him.

"Speak up, lassie, it's not polite to whisper," he said, bobbing his head at Lily like he would at any student caught gossiping in class.
Yeah, just had a rough day Monday then worked yesterday. It's the end of the school year, you know how it is, exams and final assignments and all that fun stuff.

Yeah I feel. Got done with my exams a few weeks ago thank god
I'm sorry I'm sorry, I had a rough few days and haven't been able to polish off my post. It'll be up ASAP, soon as I get home. Sorry!!

No rush. Is everything alright?
Stellar. I'll put up an OOC if we can get at least one other person on board. This plotline probably demands a smaller group size.

Just waiting for a reply from Kierk before I do my next Ghis post. I thought it'd make sense to reply to everyone at once.

Lovely. I was waiting for @Obscene Symphony to post, but I can go ahead without him?

"'Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.' I suppose we all thought that, one way or another." - J. Robert Oppenheimer, 1965.

So I've an idea. Bear with me. It gets funky.

Germany. Third Reich. It's the eve of World War II. Hitler is waging lightning wars across Europe. France has fallen, Great Britain is beseiged by air strikes, and Jews across Europe are fleeing persecution. In both the United States and Germany, scientists are scrambling to discover new military technology, something that could end the war once and for all. Sound familiar?

Here’s where we deviate from history. Forget nuclear physics. Our characters stumble upon a far more terrifying discovery: magic.

Magic in this world isn’t some cutesy thing that is randomly inherited. We aren’t dealing with “elementals” or “spells.” This here is an unknowable source of power and energy. It’s terrifying. It’s chaotic. It’s unpredictable. It’s something that manifests in nature- storms, hurricanes, earthquakes, and the like. And it’s just been discovered in a laboratory.

The scientists don’t understand it. They can’t channel it very well, even in a controlled lab. Very complicated physics are required to even begin to understand it. (Yes, I’ve basically taken thermonuclear physics and called it magic instead.) But here’s the kick- those who are exposed to it start developing strange abilities that they can’t fathom or control very well.

But one thing’s for sure: the military potential is tremendous.

The plot, then, boils down to a motley group of German scientists and their allies trying to keep magical secrets out of the hands of the Nazis.

The plot possibilities, really, are endless. We could have a struggle to defect to the United States. We could have scientist-led resistance groups trying to take down the Third Reich from within (White Rose, anyone?) We could have a plan to assassinate Hitler.

We'll try to stay as historically accurate as possible, but some deviation from record is inevitable.

Some roles I have in mind:
- German scientists who struggle with loyalty to their country, sense of self-preservation, and ethical principals
- Activists bent on using magic to take down the Third Reich
- Magically-endowed German Jews in hiding
- Nazi spies infiltrating the university

This is a wonky idea, so I’m certainly open to suggestions. I think this could be cool. Hope you agree. Who’s in?

My estimate would be that stigma stems from old religious and cultural views that many in the kingdom still stick to. It would explain why most are against it and some not.

It'd be interesting if the anti-magic sentiment had a strong religious bent to it. That would cast magic users (and scholars of magic) as Galileos of their time- a battle of progressives against conservatives. It also might explain why Klaus lost tenure at Highmont. Hmm. I can work with this.

What about the politics of magic? Is the crown opposed to magic in any particular way?
Oh @Jpp188 I'm kind of confused about your post there. What exactly just happened? By the way, Mytchel isn't carrying a tray or bottles, he has two pitchers. And he isn't looking over at your character every 30 seconds? And he's from the eastern deserts? I'm sorry, but your post really has me confused, I'm not sure what you're going for there. Pardon my incompetence if I'm the only one a bit muddled XD

The best explanation here is that he's talking about a different servant, or he handles alcohol very poorly and bizarrely and is seeing things or becoming overly self conscious, or both.

Also curious what the King has planned for this motley crew.

Also- can we discuss the extents to which magic is taboo in Ecen? It can't be outlawed because there are entire departments at universities devoted to studying it. What's the source of the stigma against magic? Is it good ol superstition and general fear if witchcraft or??
this looks absurdly fun. still not taking new characters?

She'll make a nest on top of his head, his hair looks pretty cozy ;)

Klaus would walk around with bird-form Lily nested in his hair like it's the most natural thing in the world.
