That's what I've been saying though. The five just happened to be using wind decks.
And Hibiki does have a personality. I described him, in brief, that he was analytical and socially awkward. He was modeled after Spock, but obviously has some differences, like not going into heat every once in a while.
The four years thing though was an oversight on my part. I hadn't caught anything that noted it was a shorter school time because as an American, I'm used to high school being 4 years.
There is a focus on the character's personalities. They all have distinct personalities and relationship with one another. Interspersing this with card game jargon doesn't detract from this, and in fact, I think would be far better than divorcing card games and the people who play them.
Why wouldn't a person more interested in music than playing cards use a deck focused on musical instruments? Why wouldn't an ascetic wise beyond his years not use a deck with an aesthetic of hermit yokai (though I did consider giving him Shinobirds, I thought Yosenju made more sense with their play style and his personality). Why wouldn't a hotblooded rival with the need for speed use a deck where all its monsters rode motorcycles? Just because their decks are consistently the same attribute and because I mention the card's strategies doesn't mean I didn't put any effort into thinking up their personalities.
So maybe the reasoning is wind because wind. But it's also wind because of who these people are.
So take into consideration that I did reason that having a wind deck is the reason they're in the wind dorm. What's wrong with that? In college when you're put into a dorm it's because of your major. If you wanted Harry Potter reasoning where dorms are selected by personality, maybe write that somewhere along with how they'd test such a thing.
I feel the lack of mention of theory was just out of circumstance since the school was just a setting. They did actually have lecture portions in which you do see theory being discussed though, except you also always see the main character, Jaden, not being overtly interested. In other words, it was an oversight in the script writing and wouldn't have to come up. We could have definitely had theory talk with Bastion though, who wrote the stuff all over his wall. Though again, if you want me to use different words, just tell me what you need me to use that fits in the setting. I won't contest that.
Though if you just don't want me here, just tell it to me straight. No need to get passive aggressive.
Use of the terms stun and engine are for lack of a better word; and if not for those words, because there is a school that exists to teach this, the theory for it must exist; thus there would still be terms referring to these things, and if not, I'm using them for the purpose of describing them out-of-character. If there is a more in-character way of determining these things, please feel free to tell me and I'll be sure to use your terminology. Not to mention, I've only used the words once.
Also, the character interactions aren't at all contrived. All five of them are rivals. I've established a pacing by including where each of the five characters were in their first year and why they were in the dorm for the first place. The first three were definitely influenced by one another and have their own character arcs. Just because the boys aren't friends with one another doesn't mean they don't have history together.
I also feel like your statement about them being in the wind dorm because they have wind decks is projection. They all happen to have wind decks because those decks happen to be able to fill the niche of the characters using them, it was those niches which filled out the position in the dorm hierarchy, and it was the relationship between the five characters which determined the position of all the five in the dorm hierarchy. Though I won't lie, I did only put symphonic warriors up top because I wanted to play the deck as a main character.
Edit: I also hadn't noticed Deluge had a character who used symphonic warriors. I guess that'd be a cool interaction.
Appearance Hibiki is a tall, lanky boy with long, messy, disheveled, black hair and a three different shades of tan. He has a messy appearance, his short, scruffy mustache and beard giving off an unkempt appearance, especially paired with his messy hair which covers his eyes. Parting his hair reveals his blood-shot eyes with dark brown pupils. He's skinny, his ribs and joints showing. Hibiki often wears a tie-dyed shirt and ripped jeans when not in uniform. When in his school uniform, it is normally only kept as neat as the school requires it to be.
Personality From a very young age, it had been noted that Hibiki had a very mechanical, calculating brain. He saw the world in terms of pieces of a puzzle, and saw problems as putting different pieces together, sometimes cutting pieces whenever necessary. While this mechanical way of observing the world is good for building decks, forming strategies, and winning games it is less conducive to human interaction. Hibiki likes people in the abstract but actually fails in really making friends. Though his peers within the Wind Dorm generally like him, Hibiki can only reciprocate this at the most shallow of levels.
Despite his many years at Harmonia, Hibiki had struggled with making friends. Perhaps it was just the make up of his brain, but it was always very difficult for him to grasp the concept of friendship. It was initially his laid back and messy style which put Hibiki into the Wind Dorm. Of course, this was really due to his lack of care for the game in general, going to school just to do it rather than the love of doing it, seeing it as a means to an end.
Dorm Wind
History When Harmonia sent Hibiki an invitation to their school, Hibiki didn't want to accept it. As a young man, Hibiki had never even played the game before; he never found the interest for it. However, at the time, it was the easiest route forward and in addition, not a bad school to go to from the perspective of a young Hibiki. As smart as he was, he was still a dumb preteen, and so he very quickly learned the rules of the game, built a deck which suited his ideals, and entered the school.
Hibiki was born to a family of musicians going back to his great grandparents, and he learned many different instruments, able to quickly branch out thanks to his high intelligence. His great mechanical knowledge gave him an edge in school which led to a scholarship from Harmonia. It was only natural that his deck comprised primarily of musically themed cards. Hibiki, of course, had no idea what his rooming situation would be like. Granted, his teachers picked his dorm for him. He didn't like the idea of being put into a dorm because of something as arbitrary as personality, though he also didn't mind what he perceived to be a building of his intellectual peers. Upon meeting Hayato, however, Hibiki quickly changed his mind. Despite this and the ability to switch dorms, Hibiki never bothered.
His many years were fairly easy. Despite his lack of exposure, his intelligence more than made up for it. In fact, thanks to his lack of exposure and ironically his lack of knowledge of the game's conventions, allowed him to develop less orthodox strategies, pioneering the use of different engines independent of older, more experienced players. This natural tendency to develop new techniques had within his four years at Harmonia, put Hibiki at the very top of his dorm.

The 4 NPC's
In his first year, Onari was at the bottom of his class and nobody believed in him, especially due to the insane pressure of all his peers who seemed to have much greater mastery of the game. His position as the second best duelist in his dorm is held firm by his unique and adamant personality which itself matched his dueling style. Though he has the laid back, go-where-the-wind-blows attitude of the other wind dorm members, his reasoning for this seems to come more from the serenity of being and a premature understanding of life than simply him naturally being more calm. He often humbles himself, using self-deprecating humor to distract from the fact that he is, in fact, the second best duelist of his dorm and one of the best duelists in the school. He and Hayato are best friends.
Appearance: Onari is pretty basic. He wears a clean school uniform that he washes every day. His hair is shaved bald always by himself as a bid to save money. Though due to this procedure, Onari consequently actually has a very distinct, preppy look due to his shiny bald head, many people able to instantly pick him out of a crowd.
Deck: Yosenju
Hayato upon being admitted to the Wind Dorm was projected to be the number 1 in his class due to showing an insane amount of promise. This theory was quickly proven wrong as he was quickly beaten down by two of his peers- both girls- and immediately embarrassed. It was due to this that he made big strides to improve himself, seeing the rising star Hibiki as his main rival. The open-mindedness which comes from being part of the Wind dorm also allowed him to adjust his strategy, using those of other decks to improve his own as well as improving his dorm standings. He is a motorcycle enthusiast. His duels are always accompanied by a Eurobeat soundtrack.
Appearance: Hayato is easily discernible thanks to his crazy, spiky hair colored a lime green color with electric blue highlights which seem almost neon. His front hair is slicked back though his back hair sticks out giving the impression of a fireball. The sleeves of his uniform shirt are torn off and he wears his blazer as a cape draped over his shoulder with the collar attached with a shoe lace.
Deck: F.A.
Though she currently takes her position at third place, as a Freshman, Tomomi was the number 1 Freshman proven by defeating every single member of her dorm aside from her teacher in her first year. She is often associated with Hibiki though the two never talk; and it is precisely because of this that they are so similar. Tomomi is often seen as being cold and disassociative, caring more for her studies than her peers. Her journey as a student, where Hibiki had failed, was learning how to make friends, Tomomi forming a very close support network among the girls of the Wind Dorm. Despite her personal and interpersonal development, Tomomi is still very much uncomfortable around members of the opposite sex.
Appearance: Tomomi sports a pair of blonde twirled twin-tails which dangle down to her knees. Though her hair may seem long in a photograph, it isn't taking into account that Tomomi is actually the shortest girl in the Wind Dorm, barely standing at five feet tall. She has a very petite body and wears her clothes a size larger in order to compensate for this.
Deck: Majespecter
Yoko is Tomomi's best friend. Unlike Tomomi, Yoko has no problems interacting with other people. Despite her complex and convoluted deck strategy, Yoko has a very simple world view believing that people exist primarily to be happy. She often tries to cheer people up on a shallow notion that this will automatically make things better, sometimes making things worse in the long run. She has yet to come to terms with this, however, because her upbeat, energetic nature had thus far created more good than harm. She was fairly unassuming at first and in her first year, her deck was too complicated even for her to use, Yoko only picking her cards because she thought they were cute. Under the tutelage of Tomomi along with her teachers, however, Yoko had managed to make her way to the top of her dorm, taking her spot at number 5.
Appearance: Yoko has a very cutesy appearance in spite of standing a good two inches taller than her best friend Tomomi. She has a matty head of light brown hair. Her uniform his adorned with different charms and symbols which appear almost unecessary at times from the random buttons she wears on her collar and school bag, the stickers she puts on her duel disk, the fifty different charms she has for her phone...
