Bio

Old and beaten hat, don't take anything I say to heart because it only rarely comes from my own. Been waving around this RP stick for 12+ years, and if there's one thing I've learned it's that keeping things interesting is top dog. I'll take a character who is interesting and challenging for both me and the plot over the same group of misfit archetypes any day of the week. Plots follow the same rules. Unless it breaks the mold somehow, I'm just not that into it. Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu

I resent this introduction for not letting me start it with the half-page of bullshit girl talk I had pre-written for laughs.

...On second thought, it's probably for the better.

Sorry to hear you won't be joining, IB, I know how it is.
Karasugawa Karako had been sitting restlessly with her group of coworkers-cum-friends at the net cafe that Natazume had chosen, shooting the shit, before everything had started rolling out of control. She was always a little frustrated being called on for gatherings like this, because it meant less time socializing with her nebulous cloud of other acquaintances. She was always happy to drop everything for work, or for these people that she had spent so long with that she called friends, but it was hard to reject the feeling that she could be gossiping with Miki and Keiko right about now, or shoving burgers into her face with Alice. So these meetups were often attended by a Karako who was fidgety at best, snappy at worst, even though she really couldn't be more glad to get together with everybody.

Just another idiosyncracy. Just like me. Something else to not think too hard about.

She'd been enjoying her time off, and this sort of gathering suspiciously resembled work, but not until just a little later did it turn into real work. Hackers on the move, or some such. They'd rented the room at the cafe for a few hours, and hopefully this would be clean work, but Karako had been sitting somewhat uncomfortably, on a chair turned backwards, her chest, arms and head sagging over the back of the swiveled computer chair. Too late did she decide this was a bad posture to leave herself in while working. Her body had already taken the shape of the seat and now it would be even more work to get up and shift positions. Screw it. she thought. It'll be, what, a few hours at most? This body of mine probably deserves that much abuse anyway. Taking a deep breath, she had logged on to Cnnt, shedding her identity and name, and becoming Cypher.

Smirking briefly as she felt the familiar weight of her Katana, she took a moment to flit from left to right feet, shifting her balance and 'getting the blood flowing' though such a thing was obviously useles when it came to a digital avatar. She had learned from her instructor that a good warm up was the most important part of any exercise. If she let herself slip just because she was in a digital body, it would breed bad habits. Karako had enough bad habits as it was.

She was met with some Gvn goon before being dropped fully into the problem, all of her friends materializing around her. 'Cypher' kept her warmup going while being talked at by the man here. As long as she was listening and could internalize, repeat, and follow instructions, odds are he didn't care what she was doing. And Cypher didn't care if it frustrated him in the process. Gvn folks might as well all use the same old conservative avatars, you couldn't tell them apart. This one was as stone-faced as the rest.

But there was something strange about his explanation. He was breaking up, Cypher could tell from his speech. A glitch? In the Gvn systems? It wasn't unheard of, but it was rare. Extremely rare. The man disappeared after giving the shakiest explanation she had ever heard, and Crystal stepped in to fill his shoes, taking charge of the group. That was nice. Crystal always knew what to do, even in a convoluted situation, she saw them through.

But Cypher was not the strongest of the group, at least in the matter of physical mass. So when the gravity shifts came, she was literally nearly floored. As the noise ran through her head, she planted the tip of her long katana in the 'ground' such as it was, barely standing on her own two feet. If this was some new virus, it was hella strong. What use was she if they were fighting an enemy that couldn't be cut? It was frustrating to say the least, but it didn't last forever. As Cypher squeezed her eyes shut, nearly blacking out, she was sure she was about to get forcibly booted out of the system. But she didn't. Instead, she opened her eyes to see a strange and bizarre cityscape surrounding her. Never seen that one before... Maybe she really did black out. Either way, she couldn't feel her legs, and she was still clinging white-knuckled to the hilt of her sword, whose tip was now firmly buried in the ground below. Her back hurt, and she'd felt g-forces as though they'd all been launched into the air by the world's largest catapult or else a theme park ride. Staying on her feet had probably been an act of stupidity that she'd curse herself for later.

Regardless, she had to get her bearings. Giving her sword a massive heave, she plucked it like a vegetable from a garden, looking around her. No Crystal, and most of her friends were missing too. BreGle and Apex were here, but... what happened to everybody else? "Tch, just me and the boys, huh? Could be worse I guess..." Shaking off her legs and her sword arm (thankfully the stress wasn't so bad. She'd already warmed up after all) Cypher ran her left hand through her hair, shaking it away from her face. Among the three of them, Apex was the most senior, but Cypher was easily the least patient. And she knew of the senior's military background, so she wasn't about to waste any time on small talk. Frankly, it suited her just fine. This place was beautiful, in its own way, but that didn't mean she wanted to be stuck here.

"What's the plan of action, leader?"
Life happens, yeah? No problems here, I'll be around.
Chloe had to think for a moment on her own intentions. "Straight into the hornet's nest, huh..." She wasn't totally set on fighting with this unknown magi, though it seemed that her prospective opponent wanted a fight, or was looking for an excuse. Maybe Chloe was just projecting. In the end, she fell back on the logic that had kept her from death or corruption: What would be the most entertaining option?

"Ah, so you saw that little bit of work, did you? You guys really do have eyes and ears everywhere... Well, it was made to be found, so I'm happy it could serve its purpose. Glad you liked it. Yeah, I made that 'effigy' as you call it. And... yeah, I'm on my own. Too much responsibility otherwise, y'know? Too much stress. Surely you know what I mean." Chloe was beating around the bush, trying to get a rise out of Eponine, who, while it seemed as though she should be smoldering, seemed to have something of a stone visage. This was entertaining for the carefree girl, though it was possible she was pushing her luck just a little too far in front of this stranger she had never met.

"Right... Anyway, you say your owner wants to talk to me? How unusual. I suppose it wouldn't do for you to go against orders, huh? Yeah, I'll come with. Lead on, though forgive me if I stay transformed. I don't really have any reason to trust you or any number of armed goons you might have waiting in the bleachers. Name's Chloe, by the way. Chloe Hartmann. Don't bother with a background check. I bet you won't find that name in any databases these days. The poor and the downtrodden are so often overlooked by those in power."
I'm usually a little uncertain about mind-reading, but this particular time I'm playing a character who that wouldn't be all that useful against, so who am I to judge? In practice, no problems here.
Chloe didn't have to be paying much attention to realize that her time was limited. The rooftops could provide a potential out when it came to people searching for her - regular humans had trouble traversing even the narrowly packed city rooftops - but when she thought about it, what was she really going to do? Run through the city giving these folks a wild goose chase? Kill everybody involved, spawning more havoc?

"...Not the worst ideas in the world, and they sound kind of fun..." But no. She had told Oscar that she was finished avoiding confrontation, and that still held true. Not that she wanted to get shot again. Her mobility was already hampered by one wounded leg. She didn't relish the idea of having to walk around town doing a handstand because of bullet holes in both legs, though again, it sounded just a little fun.

Chloe transformed without any particular flair, and simply stood her ground. She was far enough away from the safehouse that nothing should be traced back to the people there, so it was time to meet her maker.

As the group drew closer, her suspicions were confirmed, seeing a magical girl heading their ranks. That made sense. Five humans didn't do the job, why send anything less? The girl in front of her looked a bit younger than Chloe herself, and was wielding an impressive warhammer. She had to compliment the girl on her taste in weaponry. That wasn't a tool made for fixing things.

As the girl approached, Chloe held up a massive armored hand in greeting, signaling that she didn't intend to fight. At least not right away. "Hey lady. You're the hound they sent to track me down, huh? Well, I guess you did it, so good on you. Here to take me to jail, then? Or kill me, maybe?"
Won't lie, part of me wants Chloe to stay on the opposite side as Eponine because I think they'd make great rivals for various reasons. But another part of me thinks it'd be awesome if they pushed past their differences to fight for a common cause and became unlikely friends and this super awesome team. The fact that various circumstances exist that might lead to either option in the end is exciting.

More RPs need this kind of tension.
So many authoritarians popping up, I can't help but feel like a bowling ball staring down the lane at a bunch of pins :D
Sorry for the wait guys. Posted, anyway. Somebody's free to come across Chloe if they want now, she'll just be wandering the streets avoiding any armed checkpoints that she sees.
Chloe shrugged noncommitally. "Don't worry about things you can't control, man. Stress is a good way to cut your lifespan short. Nowadays more than ever. Well, for humans anyway."

She didn't miss the looks she had been given. Rather, she had been expecting (and had, in the past, received) far worse. Oscar's distrust wasn't totally unfounded either. "As for my plans? You've gotta be kidding me. It's real simple. If they follow me here, I'll beat them until they never come back. I don't care if the whole damned city falls down around this building. If I'm here, these walls will stay standing... But I won't stay here for long. Hiding's never done me any good."

Thinking about it for a moment, she decided on a course of action. Which is to say, she picked a whim from the ether.

"In fact... You can go ahead and talk to the higher ups. If ever you fellas had any plans of world domination, any buns in the oven just waiting for the bread to rise, now might just be your time. I think I'm done waiting around. You lot can join me, take advantage of me, use me, or just sit there and watch me die for all I care. Like you said, you didn't survive this long on blind faith. I've got faith that the Compact will do whatever's best for the Compact. So I hope great things will come of this. But I think the time for a good hearty offensive is coming real soon. We'll just have to see."

Her little speech concluded, Chloe stepped down on her wounded leg a few times, testing different weights, before nodding, satisfied. "It's not perfect, but it'll do. Thanks Doc. Here's to seeing you alive on the other side. I'm out!" Tossing her headphones on again, she peered out a crack in the door to make sure she wasn't being followed, gave a thumbs-up to the people behind her, and darted out the door, closing it softly behind her. They would prefer she left no trace, probably, so she did her best to hide her presence until she was a little further away. After reaching a safe enough distance, Chloe breathed a sigh of relief. She was back on the streets, and away from the judgmental stares. For now, that would have to be good enough. And if she ran into anybody else, well, hopefully nobody wanted to shoot her.
