History: Pokemon have been a part of Rhode's life since day one. Raised by his grandparents, and primary caretakers of the Safari Zone of Fuscia City, Dolan and Elsie Ahrens made sure his childhood was never dull. Frequent camping expeditions into the rough terrain to help his grandparents catch and treat Pokemon injured by careless trainers were a staple of his life. He learned to read thanks to his grandfather's books on Pokemon health and wellness, and spent his later years roaming the Safari Zone alone doing the work the his grandparents could no longer keep pace with, with an abandoned Charmander he dubbed "Kye" as his constant companion. Due to their work maintaining and restraining the wide variety of wild Pokemon at the edge of the city, the Ahrens' enjoyed a measure of peace from the Kurowasa clan for a great number of years, until attendance to the Safari Zone began to wane and bills began to pile higher.
Pleading and bargaining with the Kurowasa clan produced little results, and left the future of the Pokemon preserve in jeopardy. To make matters worse, the Clan started encroaching more and more on the Zone's land without any real force to stop them. Rhode took up with a few of their more frequent "visitors" and their illicit activities to help pay the bills, much to his grandparents' chagrin. The rigorous training and neat superhuman level of physical prowess suited Rhode well, as he quickly developed a knack for parkor and freerunning that let him better keep pace with the Pokemon around him.
However, an accident that left one of the Clan crippled left Rhode with a target drawn across his back. Unable to keep their grandson safe in Fuscia any longer, they sent him off to take his P.T.A.E. in the hopes that obtaining status as a trainer would help offer him some protection against the Clan. Meanwhile, Rhode is convinced if he and Kye can climb the ranks through the Pokemon League, they might have a shot at speaking with Koga to convince him to give them back their lives and the Safari Zone.
Rhode has little issue getting along with people and Pokemon alike, but wholeheartedly despises restriction and rules of any sort when the world he grew up with was so open. He couldn't care less about his own wellbeing when it comes to his Pokemon, and would rather take the blow himself than see his partners in pain.
Academic/Exam Proctor Report:
"While technically adept throughout the course of his examination, I have serious concerns administering a passing score. I would be remiss in my duties as a proctor for this exam to not bring to light the utterly reckless nature and lack of self-preservation demonstrated by Mr. Arhens. I understand most young men lack any fear of their own mortality, however, in all my years I have not witnessed such a reliance on sheer, dumb luck as I was privy to throughout the duration of his examination.
As a case in point, during the field trials, Mr. Ahrens thoughtlessly stepped in the path of a wild Pokemon's attack to prevent it from reaching his own assigned pokemon. Though he was able to complete the exam, he required treatment from the on staff medics.
Such blatant disregard for trainer safety, even his own personal safety, was not just a common theme during his exam, but highlighted during his mental evaluation as well. As I have been led to understand, his primary occupation prior to this test involved the rehabilitation of wild Pokemon. I have serious concerns that perhaps his previous experiences with Pokemon will leave him predisposed to take greater risks and be susceptible to injury without immediate aid."
