@sMoKe That should probably go in the Characters tab.
I'm sure you can prolong if both players agree, within reasonable limits. And, sure the execution thing works, though you'd have to be somewhat evil to have them at your mercy and still kill them, which I don't think the tournament requires.

And I suppose they don't have to say any dramatic last words, but I imagine people would want to roleplay their character's reaction to being mortally wounded.

Are you gonna use Evvie? :P
You may not kill a character until you have had two of your previous posts for that fight become canon, so fights will not end in a single post.

I feel like the above statement can be interpreted in multiple ways, so it might be good to have a more clear and rigid combat structure laid out. The way I imagine it is as follows.

- Every fight consists of multiple rounds and is a best of five.
- Every round, both contestants write part of the battle and the other players vote which becomes canon. Since you're building up to a win, each post should probably involve your character gaining some sort of upper hand, like inflicting a minor wound on your opponent.
- If two of your posts have already been made canon, the next one wins you the match. This means you can end that post with killing or incapacitating your opponent.

Since characters will get killed while under someone's else's control, you might want to discourage people from killing their opponent in a way that would deny them any last words (i.e. decapitation). That way, the character's own player can still determine their final actions before they succumb to their injuries.
In line with Lugubrious' RP and ArenaSnow's suggestion, we should probably add a "fighting style" part to the CS that details their usual tactics, so the other person can control them more accurately. sMoKe already has some of that under personality, saying he prefers an honourable engagement, but it still leaves a lot to extrapolate. Is he likely to use his spear for aggressive charge attacks, or more defensively to keep his opponents at a distance?

I'll soon get my sheet ready as well. Is it maybe a good idea to provide a standard CS format?
So about the setting. Lugubrious' RP is quite complex and multiverse-ish, for lack of a better word, but I would enjoy doing something more grounded for this one. You mentioned gothic fantasy, which I like a lot as well.

The premise could be something like this: Between wars, malevolent magic and supernatural monsters, most of the world has gone to shit. Most people struggle to survive in the fantasy equivalent of a post-apocalyptic wasteland. But one city stands tall and uncorrupted among the rubble. To keep the population pure, only the truly great may enter this city. Thus, from time to time, a tournament is organised, giving the most skilled and most gifted outsiders a chance to prove themselves worthy of entering. Of course, none of the contestants know first-hand what the city is like on the inside, which can be an additional source of conflict. Wait, did I just describe the plot of the Hunger Games?

Or if you want to go really dark: An ancient lich must feed on powerful souls to sustain himself, but his body is too worn away and decrepit to seek them out. Thus, to satisfy his need for both souls and sadistic entertainment, he organises a tournament. The ultimate winner will have their greatest desire granted to them, within the limits of the lich's powerful magic. The losers become fuel for the lich's own withered soul. (Obviously, this means every fight would be lethal, which we may or may not want.)
I guess most people interested in this are already in Lugubrious' RP.

Would you mind trying it out with fewer people, Jace? I'm eager to try this method of combat, but I'm not so fond of joining an RP that's already been running for a month.

I can help you further define the setting and rules, if you like.
@sMoKe This doesn't work on arena rules, so you'll probably be fine.

@JaceBeleren Since you want a large group: You'd probably get more interest if you posted this in the Casual Interest Checks too. Not many people browse the General Interest Checks, in my experience.
P.S. Half dragon, half demigod. Does that make them a quartergod?

And if someone's great-great-grandparent is a god, are they a nickelgod?

Please excuse me for that horribly far-fetched pun
This sounds great. I love writing combat, but I quit the arena a long time ago due to the competitive and argue-y nature.

I can't guarantee yet that I'll have time to participate, but you can put me on the "probably" list.
@TwelveOf8 Giving everyone a learning disability would cause far larger changes. If they can't learn sign language, how can they learn verbal language? Especially given that they almost never hear it. The premise demands that people are intelligent enough to learn a language in the first place. Imposing a learning disability on everyone also greatly limits the players' options for character creation.

(Besides, if you're talking about contrivances, maybe the first thing you should ask is: how do people speak at all without lungs?)

That being said, it makes me wonder what people learn in schools, and how. Since no one will speak, they have to learn mostly through the written word. But how can they learn to read if no one can verbally tell them what these symbols mean? A system of hieroglyphics might be much more valuable to a society of mutes than a system of letters. But then again, no one can create new books, because nobody can write for an extended period of time.

It also, of course, raises the question of why people would bother teaching their children a spoken language at all.

I love this idea for an RP, but it sure as hell is ambitious, having to create the internal consistency to support it.
