Alright, I'm not done with it yet but this is the ooc. http://www.roleplayerguild.com/topics/79673-the-war-for-baji/ooc

Will finish it later today, but that's where it will be. So far just gave more of an intro into the role you guys are and the immediate background. Will add rules, CS, and indepth lore/details when as I update it over the course of today.
The Story So Far

The Baji Isles are in turmoil, the large scale peace that many hoped Naji would bring turned out to be little more than a foolish dream. Nakaki encroaches on one of the borders, their skirmishes resulting in massacred villages and hundreds of uninvolved parties left homeless in the aftermath. It won't be long until it leads to large scale warfare, the fear of it already causing smaller clans to flee the area or pledge loyalty to Nakaki. On the other end of the islands Hojo has been popping up all around, villages and towns suddenly putting up his banner. While he brings prosperity, his leadership style means that the fancy streets of his towns are filled with gangs and mercenaries fighting over control and for his favor and often attacking any non Hojo villages around them. Many small clans have experienced issues of their own, with strange occurrences going on and many Lords suddenly vanishing or behaving out of character. Fear of the growing Ka-Tu runs throughout all of the islands, and rumors feel the air of foreign witches causing calamity where ever they go. Baji has always been a violent chaotic place, but signs point to something big happening soon.

The Shima Clan had done their best to stay out of the problems, even with their current military strength. It has close ties with the Naji clan but tensions have been mounted in the past few years due to Shima being unwilling to join their fight against Nakaki, with many local towns wondering if Shima is planning to join the young clan. The worst event in Shima history occurred only a few days ago when a strange group of outsides took advantage of their hospitalities and stole the Clans's sacred relics before using strange magic to distract the warriors and make their escape. As their mystics work on holding up their ancient protections, Lord Shima came up with a plan. The group couldn't have gotten too far and it would be hard for them to leave Hisiano this time of year, someone would have to go after them. The bulk of the military and their greatest warriors were too busy holding off demons and preparing for Ina attacks to go, and thus a rag tag group was chosen.

A recent immigrant to the clan hoping to repay its gratitude, Jiang Baji. A young half-Oni enforcer and fledgling Youkai expert, Yuudai Wakahisa. The friendly Lord Oja helping by sending his trusted vassal, Kenji Takeda. The ever loyal Gin, a half-oni blacksmith always looking to help out. A neko samurai, standing in for his father to help the clan, Tarou Sasaki. And an elder Tengu to help keep them in line with her wisdom, Metou Toribaba. The unusual group was made the official representatives of the Shima Clan and sent out on their journey for the Relics and to gain allies for a bigger plot they fear the thieves were a part of.

Moving ahead of them was the Neko Guard, Tetsuya Ueno who was trying to speak with the leader of Ru when he stumbled across a new development involving the Naji clan.

Clan Reputation/Relations

Shima Clan's current status with other clans:

Group Reputation/Relations

The Player Character group's current status with various factions:

Will update once the group begins to meet people.
Minority Races:

Outside of humans several races have sizable populations within the Baji Isles and while less numerous than the human majority each represent an important part of the region.

Historical Races

Other Realms

There are more realms on the planet than just the physical plane. Each of these spans the whole planet or in the case of the Spirit World, all reality. These realms are not specific to Baji, but their existence has had an effect on the cultures of it.

Bestiary of Non Youkai

1. Join or ally with a clan. Going it alone may seem cool and profitable but it just opens you up to being killed as a man or kidnapped as a woman. These clans may act noble but many are glorified street gangs, not to mention the actual bandits, and the various Yokai looking for stragglers.

2. Nothing is free. Don't expect to make it by on charity and kindness of strangers. If you want help you better be willing to pay for it; through cash, through muscle, through your body, any means that clears debt or gains it in your favor is essential. You don't want to owe strangers, but them owing you will be useful later down the line.

3. Always keep a weapon. Or be good with magic, or be a badass karate expert. But never be defenseless as there is always something looking to take advantage of those unready for the cold wilderness between cities.

4. Show Respect to shrines and ancestors, even if you don't give a crap about your own family history. Ancestor worship is a big deal in Baji, and more than that, actually summoning samurai spirits and ancient war mounts is a very real and popular school of magic. Keeping that in mind is simple way to avoid making needless enemies.

5. Go big or go home. If you have to piss someone off or assault a clan, make sure you make it a grand. Reputation means everything and if you don't want to be killed next time you go to buy bread, make sure people are scared of your wrath. Do as much damage as possible or at least make yourself seem very threatening if unleashed, you need the rumor mill spreading far and wide.

6. Think before you act. Don't be a dumbass thinking he can change the world over night.

-Traveling merchant , From his still being written book "My Time in Baji, and how I became the Lord of Trade"

Clans

(colors don't represent land owned, but the sphere of influence. The three colors are the current most influential/power clans)

The Baji isles are regarded by most as a region more than a nation, due to the fact that they lack any central government what so ever. For far back as any human knows the various clans have laid claim to segments of each island; constantly fighting over them and losing, gaining, and being replaced all the time. Due to the instability of the region there are no real defined borders and any given village could be part a clan on the other side of the isles while an inch outside is owned by a completely different group. The general pattern is a few clans will get rather large and continue to grow and swell for a few generations before either falling to infighting or stretching themselves too thin only to be slowly replaced by upstart clans or their old servant clans. Despite the constant warfare most small and medium sized clans live in peace with their neighbors with most conflict coming from the larger clans or people wanting to expand into other islands. Even in peaceful clans, the clan itself is the most important part of someones identity with it replacing the family name in all but the most influential of families and you are expected to identify your clan of birth before anything else.

Types of clans/Clan list

Political Powerhouses:

Clans in this category are the groups capable of enacting the most wide spread changes and are the closest thing to ruling parties of the region. They often are the strongest, but that is not always the case as their influence could come from other methods and it is more measured by how many towns swear loyalty to them or favor them as governing bodies. Most outside nations deal with one of these clans as they tend to be the most organized and the largest. People always assume that clans in this category will take over all of Baji, but that has never happened before.

Independent Clans

These clans are normally smaller and unconnected to the political powerhouses and often either freely trade with all of them or avoid them all together if they are far away. Anyone can create one of these, just send me the details and if it fits I will add them.

Other Factions

The War for Baji

The Baji Islands. Once they were united as a single nation with both Emperor and Shogun and were considered a rather strong and fearsome nation ready to face any and all challengers. That era is now little more than a half remembered legend, many thinking it was never real to begin with. For as far back as anyone remembers there had been no massive government controlling the land, instead just countless clans serving as kingdoms and empires of their own as they strive to conquer the entire region. With the islands having their own spins of culture and religion many wouldn't even consider them related if it wasn't for their shared past. The land constantly fought over by men calling themselves everything from Boss to Emperor, bandits terrorize the small villages in between, Oni harass traders, and demons lurk in the night. Most just do their best to live their lives, but more and more and being dragged into the ever growing conflict between clans while hidden threats continue to grow power.

For reasons that vary from birth to punishment, you are under the Shima Clan. A moderate sized clan that had traditionally stayed passive in the wars that ravaged their land, a collection of religious towns and villages that focused more on dealings with the spirit world than the conflicts of man. Over time they found themselves dragged into conflict more and more, the changing nature of war and politics of the region slowly building up as more enemy clans that sought their destruction. Eventually Shima had no choice but to embrace the old ways once more, their summoners and samurai retrained for war over the last few generations to face these new conflicts and more than capable of going on the offensive. Despite their forced conversion to warriors the Shima clan was still known for it's friendliness and welcoming nature towards others, and would always welcome those who left their original clan. This friendliness backfired when a clan-less group of guests managed to steal their sacred relics through both deception and magic. Given to them by a powerful Kami the relics protected them against evil spirits and gave them the strength to help banish demons from the world; without them eventually all their defenses would fail. Unable to part with his best warriors due to weakening barriers, Lord Shima gathered you all as a last resort. None of you are the heroes of the clan, but each for tasked with a mission worthy of one: Gather allies for the crisis ahead and return the relics any way you can.

The War for Baji is an adventure roleplay set in a japan inspired fantasy setting with some sci fi/steampunk elements. It follows a group of people on a journey for their clan that sends them across islands and has them getting both directly and indirectly involved in the massive war going on. While their is a general framework to start how the roleplay goes depends on what the characters themselves do. The friends and enemies you make will help shape the future of not just Shima but the region as a whole. The current balance of power is very unstable and the smallest thing could tip the scales in someone's favor, for better or for worse.

Affiliations: (factions or other groups) Zhu Government all sects. Council of Interstellar races (Associate, non member)

Appearance:

Personality: Li Hua is considered by many to be the ultimate product of the Zhuni culture, the ideal example of a Zhuni woman. Throughout all of the kingdoms she presides over many women and girls have begun to imitate her as she continues to be seen as more than just their leader but a representation of their entire way of life.

She holds a very high view of herself in both ability and appearance, everything about the way she talks and moves conveys this feeling. Her clothing shows skin and highlights her form, her walk emphasizes her curves to any watching her, her very smile and speech is meant to enthrall others in the allure. She is a vain woman who makes no attempt to hide it, speaking of her beauty in casual conversation and remarking on others lack of or what they need to do to look better. Beauty is very important to her, to such a degree that she takes care of herself to ensure she always looks her best, whether it be to ride into battle or to simply walk down the hall. Regardless of whether your covered in blood and mud she expects you to look good, for beauty of body is the first step to beauty of the mind and spirit. She extends this view to others as well always openly commenting on how others look and offering advice to look better, sometimes even sending people to give makeovers or trainings to help with fitness if she is feeling charitable. She wants everything to look good no matter what her connection to it or her is (although the closer ones are obviously more urgent)

The woman who rules the Zhu Empire is no longer the playful princess obsessed with only having a good time instead becoming a strong and dignified ruler. Her arrogance and sexuality remained largely unchanged but she became much more serious and devoted to things she believed in. Weather a policy or an enemy, if it's for the good of her people or she thinks its right to do she will take it on with an unwavering confidence of success. She shows no fear and is uncompromising when it comes to her ethics and ideals. She will not hesitate to fight to kill for both her nation and the people she cares about, stand against her and she'll put every ounce of her being into taking you down and anyone or anything that stands between her and that goal.

Her personal life is heavily mixed with her life as an Empress and her closest friends are her adviser and her patron Magi. She spends most of her free time hanging out with them and family and often training with them both since she can never know when something will happen. .

Personal Philosophy summed up in 1-2 sentences: I follow my own path and heart. I will not blindly follow those of my ancestors.

Training:(if any): While she was never a slouch in the combat department she didn't start to truly take it seriously until after her parents died. Absorbing her mother's essence gave her the raw material to work with, and her grandmother's extensive training gave her discipline to put it to use. The results were a warrior on a level rarely seen among her people. She has studied and mastered several martial arts styles specializing in the more aggressive ones, her favorite being Imar's Claw: A highly offense oriented style where the user turns their finger tips and nails into deadly claws to rip, tear, grasp, and shred the enemy. She has fought thousands of other fighters since her return and has only lost a few times and even then she often had proved she was the more skilled and dangerous combatant. Any world or realm that knows of her empire fears or respects her as a Master of Martial arts and force to be reckoned with in personal combat.

Magical proficiency: She has latent magical ability, but no formal training.

Chi proficiency and Techniques: Like all Zhuni her powers are a result of chi manipulation and physical fitness, with her limits depending on how much chi she focuses into any one thing. At her absolute base, with only enough chi to live she can outrun a car and toss a pickup truck with one hand. At her best she's collapsing mountains with palm strikes, splitting space ships with kicks, moving at re-entry speeds, and sinking small landmasses. Regardless of how much energy she is using she almost always has a skin tight barrier of chi around her person allowing her to take attacks of all kinds without actually taking damage as the force is deflected or absorbed before it reaches her, unless the field is broken through first.

Her personal mastery of her chi gives her various abilities and techniques utilizing it most importantly being the fact that she can absorb energy in all of its forms. She has shown no hard limit to how much she can contain but more toxic energies tend to make her sick afterwards if absorbed in massive quantities (such as powerful nukes). Beyond that she can use her chi to heal herself and others from otherwise fatal wounds, charge objects with it, form simple constructs such as claws and some not so simple and rather complex such as extra fully functional limbs if the need arises.

Weapons/GearNone normally, though she has a very large weapon collection in her Palace.

Skills: A master of several martial arts styles and chi techniques.

She's also known for being a very good singer, her voice holding a softness and grace that matches her beauty.

She has galactic renown for her skills in the bedroom. Her skills at pleasing men being widely considered comparable to her skill with killing them.
Other abilities: None that aren't a result of her chi powers.

Weaknesses: She can get more emotional than some people would like, her judgment as Empress easily being tainted by her personal views. As such she can be goaded into rash decisions and very harsh punishments for things that may otherwise be minor.

Back story: The Fearsome and legendary might of the Zhu empire is controlled by one equally feared woman, Li Hua Qiao. 18 years ago both of her parents were killed in an attack by what seemed to be the demon-god Kirai, an attack that would have left her dead as well if her father didn't make the ultimate sacrifice. That event and the promise she made with it changed her life and way of thinking considerably. Gone was the happy party girl that the teenage Li Hua was, instead she began to train with her grandmother constantly as focused her physical and mental strength. She spent the next several years traveling all across her Empire; learning about the people, their ways, their problems, their lives. She gained many followers but also many enemies and the fights were frequent but she beat them all, proving without a doubt that she deserved to be their ruler to the vast majority of people. When she officially took the throne she was beloved by all of the empire as both their leader and who many thought would be the one to bring their Goddess back to them. She's lead them through various things over the years, from war campaigns to disasters, no matter what the situation or who she had to go through they all could count on the fact that she would do what she felt in her heart was right for her people and her legacy. She represents a balance between the traditional and the new, the might of their Goddess but also the mind and heart. She is the daughter of Honorable Ling Yun and the Great Lao Hu, the granddaughter of the Legendary Xing Yi, Master of Imar's Claw, The Destroyer of Kravatika, and the Savior of Miha Village. She is the Zhu Empress, Li Hua and all bow before her.

Other: Since Li Hua became Empress she has been a strong proponent for large scale cultural changes and overall change in how the Empire runs itself. For the past 12 years she has been changing law/policy as well as spending time trying to change people's minds and ideas about the way things have been going. She has an idea on where society should head and is doing all she can to make that a reality, to make her Empire one worthy of Zhu's legacy.
