I shook my head. "Nope, I didn't see them. I was knocked out. When I woke up, I was in the cell." I admitted. "They might be Jaxlor's for all we know. If they saw you, they would've said something in there... Right?" I crossed my arms over my chest. "I feel bad leaving them. I really do. But I don't know what else to do."
"I'm glad you guys are okay." Nina said into the shoulder of Em. They were all hugging and checking each other over to make sure they were good. It was actually really sweet. Their little moment reminded me of my siblings and I before our brother passed.
"That was a close one." I breathed out as the girl named Em finally made it back to her siblings. "Now that we're all here. What's the plan?" I looked over to Sam and waited for him to reply. "Should we just book it now, or what? Cause I'm ready to get the heck out of here."
I nodded. "Alright." I looked at him one last time before following Nina and the others. Once I reached them, I turned my attention to the doorway, waiting on Sam to make his way out.
"You guys ok?" I heard Joe ask. Nina and I nodded. "Where's Sam?" He asked.
"He's coming. He's just got to be careful." I kept my eyes glued on the doorway, waiting to see him come out so we could make a run for it.
"Mm'kay." I nodded. "Since you guys have mapped this whole thing out. One of you should go first. We'll follow. I'm not good with the whole 'following directions' thing. Never quite stuck with me. I get confused, yada yada yada...." I trailed off. "So one of you lead the way. I'll follow. Then we go from there. Is that ok?" I asked, looking from Joe to Spencer, to Sam.
"Who is Em?" I asked curiously as I followed them out. "And how are we going to sneak out of here without being caught? It was easy for me because I was alone. But now there's a group of us." I stopped. "And what about the rest of them? We're just gonna let them sit in there until they're on the front lines tomorrow?" I asked, waiting on an answer from any one of them.
I think we were all a little shocked that Sam's lock picking actually worked. No one was really expecting that lock to click but it did. I stepped aside as her brother, Spencer, ran and hugged her. "I missed you too, kid." She smiled. I guessed he was the youngest of the trio.
While they caught up, I rushed out of the cell, happy I wasn't trapped anymore. "Hey, thanks for saving us." I gave Sam a quick hug and smiled. "But we should really get out of here. I can barely breathe." My smile faded. "Got a plan?" I asked.
"Pssh, yeah." Nina reached in her curls and pulled out a hair pin. "Don't even know why I bother with those things anymore. I'm the only one that got stuck with this ridiculously curly hair." She handed the pin to Sam through the bars. "Good luck with that. I don't think it's going to work though. This isn't some movie."
"It'll work. Sam's smart, he knows what he's doing." I smiled. "Do your thing, get us out of here."
"Sam?" I stepped up, peering through the bars. "Oh my gosh, it is you! Sam, you gotta get us outta here." I pleaded. "They've locked us all up. That's why the camp is-" I paused, taking a deep breath. "Quiet." I finished."
"How are you going to get us out?" Nina asked, looking to who I assumed to be her brothers, then at Sam. "Just shoot the lock off. It'll be quick and easy." She suggested.
"Spencer!? Is that you?" She shouted. "Spencer! Oh, thank God!" Nina laughed. She couldn't believe someone had actually made it in here to break her out. "I knew I heard something!" She spun around, a big smile plastered on her face. I stood up, walking over to the bars that kept us locked in here.
"He came to get you! That means I'm out of here too." I smiled, glad someone came. "How'd he know to look here though?" I asked. Nina shrugged. She didn't care. She was just happy we'd found a way out of here. Now all I had to do was get to Sam and tell him what was going on. Then get another inhaler.
"Did you hear that?" Nina asked me. I looked up, shaking my head 'no'. I was consumed in my thoughts and had totally tuned everything out.
"What'd you hear?" I asked curiously. "All I hear is people talking." I tried to focus on what other sounds she could've heard.
"I thought I heard-- Oh, never mind." She shooed her hand and stood up, walking towards the jail cell bars and peeking through them. While she did that, I closed my eyes again and tried to relax. If we were going on the front lines tomorrow, I at least wanted to have one last good sleep.
