Pokémon Species: Golett
Nickname (if applicable): “Clay", although "Golett" serves him just fine given there aren't any other ones around.
Type(s): Ghost/Ground/Math/Punching/Building
Desired Rank: Beginner
Personality: Whether it’s lifting something heavy or sorting out the team’s gear and finances, Clay prefers to always be working. Since he doesn’t need to eat, sleep or breathe, he often finds himself up late at night taking care of little tasks here and there that the rest of the squad might have missed. Most don’t notice the work that Clay does correcting small details, but he doesn’t seem to mind much. Getting Clay to open up is as simple as asking him about some task or interest that’s been preoccupying him as of late; getting him to stop raving and ranting about something he’s fascinated with is more difficult. Clay might take longer than most to complete simple tasks, but rest assured that given time, they
will get done.
Some find the robotic nature in which Clay moves and works to be a bit unsettling. Clay, for his part, doesn’t seem to care.
History: Clay was found half-embedded in a wall several floors deep into a dank, dark dungeon. When he was discovered, the Explorers’ Guild initially believed he was a statue and displayed him in their front hall. It took a great deal of study before anyone at the guild realized that Clay was in fact a Pokemon, and even more to figure out how to reactivate him. Since his reactivation, Clay has helped construct new buildings, hauling boulders to and fro while keeping track of the Guild’s finances.
Clay has worked in the Guild a bit longer than some “beginners'', but has never actually been on a fully-fledged adventure. Until recently, he has been content to do work in the town around the guild hall. Lately though, Clay has begun to wonder about his origins, and seeks to delve into dangerous dungeons in hopes of unearthing the truth about his creation. He is about to sign up for his first adventure alongside the Pokemon he’s worked with for almost a year, and he could not be more excited.
Distinguishing Features: Clay wears a yellow hardhat and carries his tools using the strap which secures the seal on his chest, though they often get stuck in the soft clay which comprises his body. He has no problem expelling foreign material, but often forgets it’s there. Some of the more mischievous adventurers have started playing the
“hilarious” prank of jamming small objects into his back and seeing how long it takes for him to notice. Clay isn’t fond of that.
Favourite Moves: Brick Break, Bulldoze, Dig, Shadow Punch, Protect
Strengths: Clay is a strong, sturdy individual with a mind for mathematics and an impeccable memory. As a result, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better builder in the Explorers’ Guild. Clay relishes every opportunity to solve a problem, whether it be with complex algorithms or brute force. Tirelessly carrying around boulders and bricks is just another day for Clay.
Although Clay can’t move particularly fast, he fights with patient endurance, blocking blows with his bulky forearms as he waits for the perfect moment to strike. While his techniques are mostly limited to punches of various stripes, they do pack quite a wallop, though perhaps less than that of more experienced guild members. Clay’s immunity to Normal- and Fighting-type attacks, along with his corporeal form and defensive prowess, also make him well-suited to being a training dummy for the Guild’s many close-range brawlers, and he’s usually up for sparring.
Weaknesses: With his stubby little legs, Clay isn’t a particularly fast runner. While he is a patient individual who takes his time, he often finds himself left in the dust of his faster, longer-limbed peers. This sadly applies to social situations as well: Clay takes far longer with the simplest of tasks than some consider reasonable, and struggles to keep up with the schedules of his swifter teammates. Not for lack of trying, of course; even if it takes him considerably more effort, Clay will try his best to participate in as many Explorers’ Guild activities as he is reasonably able.
There’s also the fact that, quite frankly, Clay can’t dodge attacks or catch up to more mobile opponents. He’ll block, Protect and counterattack for as long as he can, but anyone that Clay can’t catch has essentially nothing to worry about from him. If you want to defeat Clay, the easiest way to do so is simply... staying away from him. Sure, he can try to catch up by using Rollout, but that tends to have... let’s say
unpredictable results.
Clay can be a bit insecure about his (relatively) diminutive size. Thankfully, he mostly interacts with other even smaller creatures, so this rarely comes up. He also despises spending time in or around water, often muttering about erosion and “flooding his components”, whatever that means.
Lastly, Clay has trouble thinking “outside-the-box”. He is a calculator, not an artist, and despite his technical skill, a lack of intuition and creativity has prevented Clay from ranking up in the Guild. If asked to perform a complex task without a specific set of instructions, the inflexible golem will spend more time trying to figure out the most by-the-book way to accomplish it than actually completing said task.
Greatest Fear: Clay doesn’t really know what he is. He’s never met another Golett or Golurk before. He lacks a sense of purpose, and because of that, he’s worried that if the Explorers’ Guild no longer finds him useful, they’ll shove him back in the hole in the wall where they found him...
