Morgan's anxiety dissipated little over the next few seconds. The close call with the infected when the speakers had sounded would have been enough to damage her calm for quite a while. But now...she glanced up for the briefest of seconds. Now, she was stuck in a room with two people she didn't know. And no matter how hard she tried to convince herself that she might be safe with them, she couldn't bring herself to accept it as truth.
She tuned Casey's voice out carefully as he spoke. He wasn't speaking to her specifically, therefore what he was saying was not of immediate importance to her. Instead of paying attention to him, she continued breathing in and out, staring at that single point on the ground. Slowly, her tense muscles relaxed. Not a lot, but enough to make some slight difference.
At that moment, the Asian girl who had beckoned them into the room entered Morgan's field of vision. Any calmness she had managed to attain was immediately gone. She introduced herself as Lian. I should answer her. I should say my name, Morgan thought to herself. My name is Morgan. Say it. But whatever pathway of nerves was responsible for transmitting messages from her brain to her mouth had ceased to function. She could only listen to Lian speak and dodge her attempts to make eye contact. "This is the first time you've been alone for a while, isn't it? I'm sorry."
Morgan chewed her lip, and reluctantly nodded in confirmation. Before now, she'd always had Daniel around. He was the only one she had spoken to in weeks.
Finally, she seemed to find her voice. Though Lian had already turned back towards Casey, Morgan took the chance to speak. She didn't look up, and it looked as though she was speaking more to herself than to the others. "M-m-m-m...m-my na-ame is Mo-or-org-gan," she said, stammering so badly that her face immediately turned red from embarrassment.
