As she brought in another arm full of wood, she placed it by the fire.
The thunk of a melon hitting the stone and then the swearing, made Cilia giggle a little. It wasn't that she found it funny, well she did a little. But it expressed most effectively the best description of the day. It was a rich person swearing, not quite as vulgar as what she was use to. No one was doing things to sheep or goats or cats.

"Let me look at your head," she said to Fergus as she came close to him. In a tone that indicated this was an order and not a option and staring off his masculine pride protests. She made sure he was okay then she sat down in a way that he could use her lap as a pillow if he wanted. She was alone in a new way. A way she had never known. She needed contact from another living being. She motion to Axley that she could use her as a pillow too, if she wanted. She started to hum, as is the way of women.

The loss of things wasn't pleasing to her. She thought about the loss of the shopkeep that chased her away with a broom in the morning, but left her food when he closed the shop. The wash women that would "loose" some clothing when the seasons were changing to keep her warm. The healer that would send her to pick things when she or the dogs were sick. She thought of the baker that would have her help in the coldest parts of winter so she could sleep near a hearth. She even missed the trader that always said the stuff she found was worthless and placed it in his shop window for ten times what he paid her. She missed the boys that Snow had teaching to watch over the neighborhood, the ones that always let Snow know when she or one of the other girls were in trouble. She really missed sitting in the class with the children as they were learning their letters and listening to stories. She missed her stray dogs. They were all gone and so was her tears.

Magics, the undead, machines that fired shells like they experienced were just stories parents told their children to get them to behave and to keep them away from girls like her. They weren't real and now they were.

Cilia crushed some wild lavender and mint to keep the bugs away. Then she undid the braids of her long hair and rubbed the oils into it to protect them from the flying insects.
Bubba

Bubba was enjoying the Brazilian life. Warm beaches, beautiful woman, cheap drinks, and good food. Things started to change when he got the phone call. The Feds had raided their offices and there was a warrant for their arrest. It appears since the wells were not producing, some Joe IQ in blue figured they had stolen the oil from someplace and someone else. He had two brief cases of money, so he had his father could live well for a while.

The young woman rolled over and wrapped her arms around him and kissed him.
She said, "What's the matter?"
Bubba smiled, knowing she had heard the whole thing. "Someone thinks I am a criminal, but I didn't do anything illegal," he said.

As he tried to change the subject to something more about her, she threw a leg over him and trapped him in the bed till he gave her an honest answer. So he showed her by making a glass of water appear and then disappear, then with beer, and then with oil.

She asked if he could do that with any liquid, he explained any that he understood. She bounced on him with excitement speaking in Portuguese nearly knocking the breath out of him. She started talking about drug shortages and how he hospital needed... For multiple reasons the bouncing made him loose his train of thought.

Later in the day, he found himself in hospital scrubs in the lab looking through a microscope at different liquids. With some effort he was able to produce them. The hardest was blood, it took him twenty tries. But her excitement kept him trying as he worked at it.
Father Thomas

When Thomas made it back to his apartment, he found a hand written note from the Bishop. It basically told him that he had till Sunday to find a new place to stay. A committee of the largest donors from across the state was threatening to with hold their money from the church if anyone who had disappeared and came back were found to be working in the church. They deemed that it was not Biblical or natural for a person to have powers like what was being seen. The Bishop had tried to negotiate on the basis of human dignity and they countered with the power of the purse. With the attack on the monastery, the police station, the amount of people being robbed or hurt the argument of dignity fell flat.

His superior knocked on the door with street clothes in his size, there are very few secrets in a religious order. Thomas handed over his cassock. His worldly possessions fit into one duffle bag. They held a service of sending where the brothers prayed for him. He was given money to find a place to stay and for food for a couple weeks. His superior gave him a wonderful letter of recommendation. There were hugs and a promise that when things settled down, he would be welcomed back. Then he was shown the curb.

A couple phone calls, and he was going to be allowed to stay at the junk yard. There was an old shop near the crusher that had lights, heat, and a shower. He could warm things up on the hot plate in the guard’s shack. A ride service driver picked him up, drove him to Walmart.

As he was coming out the alarm went off. He had bought a new phone, sheets, blankets, pillow, and a cot. An African American woman said to her husband, “You can’t trust a white man. They shoplift.” Her husband was an off duty police detective who waved to a patrol car who hit its lights and Thomas was detained. He gave the officer money to pay the driver while he sat in the security office waiting for everyone to show up so they could see the security footage to determine if he had shoplifted or not. An hour later, the officers drove him to the junk yard and let him and his stuff out of the back of the car.

After another phone call, the building was unlocked for him. It was a mess, dusty and full of this and that. An old front loader was stored in there, its engine was in pieces. Thomas figured he could fix it to get out of there. Upstairs was a little office which would become Thomas’ apartment. It had a little porch that looked out at the front gate. Off the back was a half-star hotel where well, he did not want to think about what happened there. A couple bullet holes in the rear wall gave him and indication it wasn’t good though.

After being shown baby pictures and congratulating the guard. Thomas did his best Mickey Mouse, impression making an old broom and clothes start to move. He put fan in the window, the barring had frozen and Thomas put his powers to work as he turned the blade breaking the rust. With a little effort the fan turned freely. When he got it in the window, he put his attention to making it spin. At first he blew air into the building. Then he reversed it making the seals on the door whistle as he blew dust and dirt out the window. For his effort, he got to clean up the office. He organized the papers as best he could then filed them. They hadn’t been looked at for years, since the new office was in use. He would see if they could be moved over there.

Sheets were placed on the windows. As he laid on the cot, he thought about the marionettes that he saw made on the Youtube videos. He thought about each part that needed to be made. The body parts he imagined being made in glass. The first few were hard to make. As the day went along they became easier and he could form them with one thought. He found he could make them move easier than creating them. When a bullet bounced off the back of the building, he decided that he should put some armor back there to deflect the bullets. He spent the two days getting settled into the place, working the guard shack, watching how it is made type videos and cleaning.

When the owner came to check on him, he hit him up for paint for the walls. He also was shown a backroom that had a safe that weighed enough that it couldn’t be moved without the forklift. It was the owner’s fathers and the combination was lost with his dad. Thomas asked if he could try to open it for him. He would work on that.
Ally Olsen

Ally had just made it to Atlanta and checked into the university housing. She had an exciting day planned of sitting in line at the DMV and opening a checking account. Then with any luck hitting the Atlanta club scene to maybe find this rapper that was disrupting things in a major way.

Her forged documents were good, her identity was good. A plan in the Department of Health and Human Services had placed her birth certificate into the system. She died from a heart condition shortly afterwards. Ally’s cover story was that she was born in a village in a very remote part of Alaska that was settled by Russian immigrants. She had been home schooled and had gotten in trouble for under age drinking when she was twelve and sixteen. There was a picture of her as a child with a bear she had shot. Her people had even constructed a Facebook and pinterest identities for her. She had hated making the duck face poses, but the sexy clothes and beach pictures were all right.

It was suggested that she get a touring bike as she was going to adventure ride across the US and Canada. She bought a black crotch rocket with motorcycle luggage that strapped on the back and a black leather book bag. What twenty-something would take a slower heavy bike over a lighter faster one. Her black leathers were reinforces with Kevlar and her helmet had technology stolen from Japan. Nice heads up display, Bluetooth speakers. In her bag was the rest of the tech for the bike. A good camera that would allow her to see heat signatures at night, don’t want to hit a deer and cameras to allow her to see behind her in the blind spots.

A second bag contained her laptop, her side arm and ammo, two tasers, and some tools of her trade. She repacked them when she got out of town.

Her mission was to disrupt the political scene. She was mostly on her own. She knew she was not the only agent in the U.S.A. There were two in Las Angeles, one in Chicago, two in New York, and she got Atlanta. Mainly because her father was there, she did not know the man.

On the morning news, it appeared that her job was going to be easy. The bombing of a police station, attacks on a church and monastery in Savannah, a woman that changed size and crushed cars, and a couple attacks on people that were believed to be “enhanced.” To make matters more interesting, hospitals refusing to treat people they believed to be “enhanced.”

She pulled on a thin white blouse to wear under her leather jacket with a leather skirt. She tucked a taser in her coat pocket and she was ready to go.

Governor Ivy

Ivy had been down to Savanna while the flames were still burning in the church. She got her camera appearance and told people to call and put pressure on the legislators to pass the registration bill. On her way back she was informed of some hospitals not treating people believed and schools districts taking actions on their own against students that were rumored to be Enhanced.

Ivy informed her Attorney General to put pressure on those where not following the rule of law and give people due process. Schools, hospitals, any that were not following the law would be dealt with by the courts. She asked her Chief of Staff to look into finding a hospital that would treat the enhanced; she suggested that the state take control of Southwest Atlanta Hospital which has been closed for over ten years. It was a small hospital of around 200 beds. But it had an emergency room, operating rooms and could be secured. She had reported on it when it was closed. It was in a rough African American neighborhood. The crazy thought of maybe that rapper could help get people to help protect the hospital, she thought for a moment and realized it would be political suicide.

When word came to her that the legislature could not get the votes needed and the police station blew up. Ivy did some public and private things. The first was to declare a state of emergency and establish a rapid response force of officer and National Guard forces to deal with the enhanced individuals. She also authorized the purchase of non-lethal equipment that would immobilize enhanced people that were acting criminally. The military had sonic weapons, gel rounds, gas grenades, foam hardening shells, pepper spray, and other things that could used to take down the strongest and toughest criminals they were facing. If needed, tradition lethal force could be used as a last resort in order to protect lives. She wanted the enhanced alive so they could figure out what happened to make them this way.

Publicly she announced the creation of a rapid response force that was not going to be under the command of the State Police. It was going to be under the National Guard and establishing a civilian task force to study the best ways to deal with the different powers as they encountered them. Doctors, law enforcement, scientists, engineers, and of course a couple lawyers were to make up the team. John Brown was going to be given a lead role, as her Chief of Staff was going to be busy with other matters. She was also activating elements of the guard to serve in this role. Others would be mobilized to help with the recovery efforts in Atlanta and Savannah (meaning they were not going to be policing). They would be called on to help keep the mobs from rioting.

Ivy started to spin the people against the Bomber. She read the names of the officers, staff, the inmates, and the children that were killed or injured in the building. She showed pictures of the families that were hurt by the action. She also made a point that who ever did this killed and hurt many poorer African-American families in that neighborhood as family members would never becoming home. Children would have one less parent or two. She let people know that if they found children that were in need to contact their church, the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, or the Salvation Army. She knew that telling them to call social services was not going to go over well.
John Brown

At 3 am, John got a phone call from one of his informants in the state police. John had greased the wheels for a an equipment request. It made it through a bill on a rider, hidden from sight for most people. This is how John worked, quietly pulling the strings behind the scenes.

“Hey, John just wanted to give you a heads up. There was an attack on the Benedictine Monastery down in Savannah. The Church and the Monastery are both burning and a mob has formed after. They believe it was an attack by “enhanced” individuals,” the officer said. After the conversation, John called his boss and Ivy to let them know what was going on and to get Ivy down to Savanah to get in front of the cameras while there were still flames coming from the building.

On the television, a report came in that the rouge scientist had been found dead near the Baltimore Harbor. Not much more detail was given, just that the man hunt was over.
Father Thomas

Thomas had watched enough YouTube Videos and TLC episodes of How thing are made. to make one crazy. He had started to nod off. Dressed in a cassock with a security hat and florescent orange vest, he headed out armed with a stick, a dog treat, a couple bolts and a washer, and of course the maglight flashlight - one of the five battery models, big enough to crack a skull. Thomas headed to check out the large crash that had woke him.

The first thing he did was what any respectable person would do, he got backup. He took with him the one dog that liked him in the yard. She was a tough junk yard dog, so tough that she might lick you to death. "Okay, we've got to check this out. If someone is stealing stuff, we call the cops. No hero stuff," he said to the dog. If his last name was O'flannery or McMullen, he would go bust some heads with his Irish temper. But he had none of that in him. One of the strippers said that he reminded her of the Priest from the Thorn Birds to another one of the ladies. "That would make him a lover, not a fighter," he thought then told himself to worry about the intruder.

The last time that he had really tried to sneak was when he and a couple of his buddies snuck into the girls locker room, they didn't see anything. But they were there. Again he reminded himself, to worry about the intruder and not his "glory days."

He started praying to the Blessed Mother, Saint Eligius of Noyon, Michael the Archangel, and Saint Mathew as he waked. The dog was to his right side and walked with the flashlight turned off in his left.

He walked down the center of the isles of cars. Confident as a man with a two in bolt and a dog that would lick the intruder to death. He came a cross a man that appeared to be moving cars. Thomas lifted the flashlight up above his left shoulder about eye level and clicked it on. Bathing the gentleman in the bright white light of high powered LED's. In his best impression of Isabella from Phineaus and Ferb he asked the question, "What ya' doing?" trying to seem non-threatening after realizing he left his phone in the office.
Sorry! It was a mistake
John Brown

John sat at his desk watching his four monitors and two televisions. He had set a webcam up in his outer office that pointed down the hall to the governor’s office. A stack of semi-important papers sat on the corner of his desk if he needed to intervene. Ivy was soft as a politician goes, she believed in the ideals of government for the people. On his wall was a picture of Ivy with former President Carter, proof to him that they could get her into the White House. He had waited a long time to find someone like her. Idealistic, charismatic, articulate, able to think on her feet, and looked good on camera. It did not hurt that she was constantly reading and following the news and current events. She was a fairly quick study at the political game. As far as he was concerned, the only problem she had was she believed that the system works. Money and power were what drove the system.

Two envelopes of pictures came in from a detective. Blackmail pictures. He would deliver two more yes votes.
