Elva leaned back, pondering on his answer. That it had been Kire's idea was interesting, given how embarrassed she usually was when talking about her own love life or lack thereof. She raised a brow at his assertion that the arrangement would be over, as well as at good reluctance to talk about it. Two peas in a pod, those two, she thought, somehow doubting that what he said would come to pass. "Fair enough," she said nevertheless, continuing her smoking.

His next question though-- specifically, the assertion he made that came with the query-- made her sit up straighter. "Your world?" She frowned. That was disturbing. She listed off the ingredients and explained each, including those that Gavin had added to the mix. "What kind of sick bastards in your world would come up with this? Assassins?" She huffed. "I've seen a lot of things throughout my practice as a healer. Different kinds of pain. This poison is one of the crueler ones. Kire is lucky to survive it. How did you encounter it before?"

--

Gavin followed into the Tower, then gagged immediately at the smells. Daryll and Ed coughed, with Ed swearing at Daryll in Taakalon. "I wasn't exactly here for the clean up," he muttered back before hurrying upstairs. When they finally did reach the chamber, Gavin gaped. This wasn't at all what he had expected.

Kire squared her shoulders. "Well, only one way to find out, yes?" She gestured for them to step back, then, slowly, she reached out to touch the window--

--immediately getting sucked into the portal. It was so instantaneous, she barely felt it. But as soon as she stepped out, she knew exactly where she was. "Envy?"

“Hmm.” Elva was silent, except for the occasional question to Ruli as she looked him over. She waved off his apology. “I’m sure she will appreciate it. I told her to take the day to rest. But do know that you can’t be responsible for your actions under the influence of a deadly and excruciating poison,” she said, then smirked. “We’ve dealt with difficult patients before—Kire being one of them, in fact— though not ones with teeth as sharp as yours, mind.” She nodded, satisfied when he said he felt sore and heavy. It was what was expected in the aftermath of the cure. “But, in future, perhaps a warning about the disappearing? If you’d ended up outside and we didn’t find you, you’d be a frozen sorcerer by morning. Some things I can’t cure.”

She lectured him a little more about caution and taking care of himself—though not to same extent she would Kire or her cousins. Afterwards, satisfied with the rest of the results of her examination of him, Elva called for someone to bring him food, something easy for him to consume. Some soup arrived later, along with tea, and some bread and cheese. A servant brought her a bowl of fruit just as she took out her pipe to light. Sitting opposite him, she started smoking, pausing now and then to nibble on fruit.

“If they all move back to the Capital, it’s going to be awfully quiet in here again,” she murmured to herself chuckling as she shook her head, sinking into a few moments of contemplative silence as she let Ruli eat. “You’ve done so much for our family. For her. You might be tired to hear it, and I’m sure Kire is grateful, but—thank you. At this rate, Kire should put you on the royal payroll, what with all the heavy lifting you had to do on her behalf,” she said with a smirk, taking out her pipe to light. A servant brought her a bowl of fruit to nibble on, and she leaned back on her chair, taking small bites as she smoked. “I hope you don’t mind if I’m feeling chatty. Lots of emotions going around lately, as you can imagine. The way you disappeared yesterday reminded me a little of Kire during her worst times. Though you can be forgiven, you weren’t exactly lucid. But she used to be so terrible at showing weakness, even if it tore her apart inside, even if she actually wanted to be comforted. What could you expect from an orphan who got thrust upon a throne, after all.”

She blew out smoke, reminiscing. “I mean she can still be insufferably stubborn, of course, but she’s gotten better about asking for help over time. Gods know she’ll be vulnerable only with the people who matter. Which, I guess, brings me to a question I’ve been meaning to ask, and again, do forgive me for springing this on someone who had just recovered from poison, seeing as you’re rather a captive listener at the moment.” She blew out a ring of smoke, then turned her gaze on him. “Is there anything between you and Kire, besides the occasional romp in bed? No judgment on the answer, I’ve had my own dalliances here and there. But as the unwitting hostess of your trysts, I do have a little bit of a right to my curiosity.” She tapped the stem of the pipe against her lip absentmindedly as she waited for his answer.

--

Kire shook her head at her cousin and Ysayrn. “You two will have plenty of time to ‘spar’ all night later,” she commented. Gavin wrinkled his nose, looking between the two of them, while Daryll’s brow creased in confusion. “As for tasks, I only have one for you, and we’ll be doing that together: getting rid of the rune circles around the Palace and the Red Tower.”
Daryll nodded. “I assume we’ll leave the negation wards for last, in case any other magical boobytraps spring themselves on us?” He looked to Gavin, who nodded in assent.
“Besides Kire herself and the gate—or whatever that was that we summoned—everything else should still be contained by the wards we set,” the young Gemini said.
“Palace first, then,” Kire said, leading them in.

The Palace still looked eerie to her this way. In shambles, with signs of violence everywhere. The Great Hall used to be so resplendent, with stained glass windows and the portraits of her predecessors lining the walls. Banners from all the noble houses would have hung in between the columns that lined the aisle. She assumed the Gemini had either destroyed them, or perhaps made coin from them, but didn’t keep them. It wouldn’t have hurt as much if they could have at least left the portrait of her parents alone, but she knew it was folly to think they’d spare that for any reason. Sighing, Kire gave the floor to Gavin and Daryll, who gave everyone else instructions for how to scratch out or deface the rune circles. Once the Great Hall was done, Kire led them to the end of the hall, where two grand doors led into the Throne Room itself.
Gavin gaped. A great marble dais—white flecked with gold-- rose from the floor at the far end, with a red canopy trimmed with gold thread hanging over the throne itself. An amber rose window shone above the whole affair. The ceiling rose into a dome above the dais, and on it Gavin could see what looked like a painting of gods and goddesses. The throne itself, however, looked like it had been carved from a massive block of dark green jade. It was a squarish affair, almost too simple for the trappings it was surrounded with, yet it was the simple design that made it look all the more intimidating. To Gavin, it almost looked too huge for Kire to sit on. “Holy shit,” the murmured—a little too loudly, his curse echoing in the room.
“Tradition says the Jade Throne was carved from the petrified remains of a dragon,” Ed said. Kire was silent as she went up the steps of the dais. She couldn’t feel anything from it, so no traps at the moment. She stood before the jade throne upon which she had presided over banquets, made royal declarations, pronounced death sentences, and governed her lands, the way her ancestors had, the way her father had. So much blood… Her fingertips brushed the cold armrest. Did they ever sit on this? Did they think of destroying it, the way they destroyed the portraits of my sires?

Daryll and Ed looked at each other, then at Kire, letting her have this moment in silence. Gavin, too, looked at a loss for words inside this room, the weight of its history sinking into him. After a silence, he cleared his throat softly. “There’s fewer to erase here, we’d be done in no time.” Kire nodded, turning away from the throne to continue the work.

After they were done, the Palace grounds were next. It tore at Kire to see the state of the orchards, with trees felled or defaced. Those with runes etched into their bark too deeply had to be cut down, too. “You don’t have to go to the crypts,” Ed said, when they took a break after completing their sweep of the orchards.
Kire shook her head. “I’m seeing that through.”
The entrance to the Wyvern crypts weren’t far from the orchards themselves. But where once there stood marble statues of dragons guarding the entrance, there was now just broken stone. The gates had been forced open. Kire’s hands curled into fists. “You don’t have to,” Ed pressed. Kire rubbed her face and nodded silently. Ed looked at Gavin, Daryll, and Ysaryn. “Let’s make it quick.” Down below, the carven likenesses of Wyvern emperors and empresses had been defaced. Gavin coughed; it looked like the mages, in their search for any part of a Wyvern they could use for their rituals, had scoured these crypts for material. After searching, however, Gavin shook his head at Ed. No runes here. When they went back up to meet Kire, they said as much.
“Most likely, they took whatever little they could from here and took it back up to where they’d laid their circles,” Daryll explained.

Which only left the Tower now. Daryll and Gavin, not having seen its current state before, both drew a deep breath at the crystallized mages. Beneath the mages were remnants of the runes. Some of them already looked scratched out. “Fuck…” the lad said.
“You got that right,” Kire muttered. “But that concerns me more,” she said, pointing to the still-faintly glowing windows above them.
Daryll, unable to help his morbid curiosity, stepped closer to one of the crystal ‘statues’, both awed and chilled by how much of the features had been preserved. “What do we do with these?” Ed asked, not liking the idea of even being in their presence.
“Smash ‘em seems most appropriate,” Gavin suggested.
“Before that, I’m going up to the Seer’s Chamber. My hunch is, the world gate’s somehow in there,” Kire said. “I’ll go in first—yes, Daryll, that means you stay out here. Your alchemy chamber can wait for you another hour or two.” Daryll looked completely deflated by her cutting him off before he could even voice out the desire. “When I tell you all it’s safe, come in.”

The Tower, as she had expected, was untouched. Even after all this time, its strange magic only allowed Kire, her family, and whoever they trusted inside. Dusty, or at least much dustier than when Daryll was in charge of it. A smell she’d rather not identify wafted up from the alchemy chamber, perhaps from all his stale ingredients. She climbed up, past the living quarters, Daryll’s room and library, up and up until she pushed open the door that led into the Seer’s Chamber. Eight windows circled the chamber, and right across from her was a door that led nowhere. It was through there that the Seer had stepped out to meet her and give her the Ring.
But this time, one of the windows was glowing blue. The halo of light looked like a smaller version of her portal, which puzzled her. Cautiously, she stepped close enough to peer at it without touching it. In the middle of the light was an image. Caves? Kire squinted at it, the image looking familiar somehow, before she gasped. She went to another window to lean out and call down to them. “Hey, come up!”

Well, he seems more like his usual self now. Kire sighed. She wanted to ask about that ‘something else’ he had brought up, but clearly he didn’t want to talk about it. Not yet, anyway. “Alright. Take the day to rest. Though you should probably use your bed upstairs. Elva will most likely tell a better account of what happened while you were being treated.” She looked at him, sitting cross-legged in front of him, pondering on which questions were safe to bring up. “I know you want to forget everything, but—the poison. If the Gemini had it, but you remember experiencing something like it, did they get it from your world, or vice versa? You don’t have to tell me everything about it, but if assassins are going around with that kind of toxin in their arsenal, it might be important to talk about. Not now though,” she clarified as she stood up. “When you’re feeling better. You need to eat though,” she said firmly, pointing at him. “When you’re well and able, go upstairs so Elva can give you a proper dressing-down.” She turned to leave, then stopped to look back at him again. “I’m glad you’re alive.” As she walked away, she absentmindedly rubbed the fingers of her right hand together, still feeling the way he gripped them in his desperation.

Upstairs, Kire saw that Gavin was already awake at the banquet table, wolfing down a big breakfast—or lunch, as Kire noted it was already noon. Daryll was sitting opposite him, with the two girls sitting on either side of him. Elva was seated at the head of the table, and it looked as if the mood around the table was generally more upbeat than yesterday.

“The lad had told me everything,” Daryll said, unable to help the wide grin on his face, and forgetting that the younger cousins could hear. “You did it! Not that I didn’t think you could, of course,” he clarified.
“How is he?” Elva asked.
“Much better,” Kire said, holding up her hands to Etta and Pres to stop them from hugging her. “I’m still dirty,” she said, grinning. “I’ll freshen up and join you. That’s looking good,” she remarked, pointing at the food Gavin was shovelling in his mouth. He grunted in response, raising his thumb before returning to his task.

Once Ruli had left the hot springs, Kire went down for a quick bath, returning to the dining hall at the tail end of everybody’s meal. “What comes next, then?” Gavin asked, not quite willing to leave the dining table yet.
“I was about bring that up,” Kire said. “Adult talk, kids, sorry.”
“Aw.” Etta pouted. “But can Ruli make us a celebratory cake?”
“Mm. He’s tired and injured, love,” Elva put in, “if you want to ask him, you will have to wait.” Etta conceded, and she and Precy hugged Kire each, then together, before going off to another part of the manor.

“Now, to business: I will inspect the Tower today, as well as find a way to get rid of all traces of runes or Gemini magic around the Palace. We’ll need to undo all the wards,” she said to Gavin and Daryll. “If you’re not up for it yet, Gavin, you can keep resting here. Daryll could take over. At the moment, it seems we don’t have to hurry, but within the week would be best.”
Gavin shook his head. “I’m good. Sooner the better, anyway. Just let us know when you’re ready to go.”
Daryll nodded. “Likewise.”

After her meal, Kire put on the same set of armor she had worn yesterday, her sword by her side, and went to look for Ysaryn to tell her they were ready to go. They emerged just outside of camp, and immediately the guards escorted them back inside. Ed and Narda were conferring in a tent, and just as she had noticed an overall better mood back at Elva’s manor, she could tell today everyone was in good spirits, despite her calling a mourning period for the week.

“How is he?” Ed asked, though his eyes went briefly to Ysaryn’s, his attention on her for a few moments before he turned them to Kire.
“Better. And how were things around here?”
“Expecting us to run the camp to the ground overnight?” Narda answered with a smirk. Kire grinned and patted her on the back. “You, lad. You did really well,” she said to Gavin, thumping him mightily on the back. Gavin almost coughed up his lunch, but he grinned up at the giantess, finally feeling that she had accepted him fully.

You’ve rested well, I hope?” Ed told Ysaryn, a sly grin on his face. “Saving your energy for some sparring tonight?
“Good gods,” Kire said, rolling her eyes. “It’s barely afternoon.”
Daryll looked around, clueless, but shrugged, deciding he didn’t need the details.

Kire raised her brows at his first words. Well, with teeth like his, she didn’t envy the poor healer or attendant who had been at the receiving end of that. But given that Elva didn’t seem overly alarmed by this, she assumed it wasn’t overly serious. Elva had had her share of unruly or deranged patients over the years. So she said nothing yet to this confession, nodding in understanding when he told her that he wasn’t feeling as much pain as he did yesterday. That was good, at least.

When he sat himself up, she did the same, to stretch and also to see if he needed help. When he didn’t, she allowed herself to relax a bit, covering her mouth as she yawned and stretched. He turned to her and asked with surprise that she had stayed, Kire shrugged. “I made a promise. I kept it. Consider it working towards my debt to you.” She figured he may not remember asking her to do so last night and let it pass. “I don’t know if you remember, but you asked me to take you home yesterday. I’m returning with Ysaryn to camp later, but if you don’t want to wait too long and Gavin is ready, I can portal you back within the day.”

Kire had intended to stay awake at least long enough to make sure he was able to sleep, but tired from the battle and from the gate ritual she ended up drifting in and out of sleep repeatedly. Still, every time she managed to keep her eyes open, she gently stroked his back, the way she would before for her younger cousins whenever they had nightmares. She was only vaguely aware of Ysaryn coming in with a blanket and pillows, pulling one towards her to rest her head before she finally dozed off properly, still clutching him softly. When she did finally stir again, it was already morning, though she couldn't tell down there. The temperature inside woke her up, then Ysaryn's presence got her to move, though only slightly, not wanting to wake him.

"Mm. I bet," she murmured sleepily. She observed him for a few moments. He seemed better. "Thank you for the warning. Please let her know we'll be up later. He hadn't dozed off immediately, I think. He needs a bit longer." She paused, then smirked at her. "I'm sure Ed is eager, too. We'll go back to camp later."

After Ysaryn left, Kire slowly sat up and drank a little of the water, Ruli's arm across her lap. She stayed that way, observing him as she waited to see if he would wake. When he didn't, she lay back down, attempting to go back to sleep. She woke again, just before noon. Softly, she touched his cheek. "Hey," she whispered. "Ruli? Thirsty? There's water here." She paused, waiting for him to wake properly. "How are you feeling?"

He said it felt familiar. And that last time he had been alone. Kire's brow furrowed. How did he know how this felt? Did they have this poison in his world? Who poisoned him? But for now, she focused on him, his grip on her hand, his request. She nodded, and when he tried to pull her close she moved toward him.

As carefully as she could, she drew him close, one arm wrapped around him. "I won't leave," she assured him. "I'll keep you safe."

Kire pursed her lips, not sure how much detail he could absorb at the moment. "Poison," she answered. She could see the cut on his skin where the hostage had presumably introduced it into his system. "Elva says it's a stronger version of one they had tried on me before. She mentioned Gavin helped with the antidote. Maybe they can tell you more about it, after you've rested more."

He was in no condition to be thinking about that or anything else. "Just try to sleep it off tonight. I'll stay here, if you need me to."
In Wanderers 4 yrs ago Forum: 1x1 Roleplay
Kire waited to see if he regained more clarity, watching as he observed her, then her hand. He spoke, sounding like the events prior to tonight were only just dawning on him. She nodded, affirming his first statement, then paused, wondering what he meant by them taking something. She looked him over; he was armorless now, and the pouch that carried her blood was gone. Was that how the Gemini had activated the gate?

To his question she nodded again, a small smile on her face. "We did. With your help. And Gavin, and Ysaryn. I'll forever be thankful." And in return, you get pain and fear. Her smile disappeared, remorse stabbing at her. She studied him as he kept his eyes closed. "I owe you my life," she murmured. "I don't know how to repay you."

Elva had told her he had been confused, so Kire waited to see if he recognized her, or even knew or understood what she had said. When he snapped, she almost thought he had meant it for her, but then she felt Ysaryn briefly behind her before the elf walked away. Kire expected him to tell her the same.

Instead, he extended his hand to her, and pleaded. His words stung; she didn't know how to help him, even though she wanted so badly to take his pain and confusion away. He was almost like a child in this state, fearful, alone, needing comfort. With a sigh she stood and walked over closer to him, then, after a pause to think it over, carefully lay down, pressing her cheek against the stone floor, facing him. She took his hand in her scarred one, squeezing gently.

"I'm here," she murmured. Gods, she could feel how badly his body trembled. She wasn't sure what else to say, if explaining where he was or who she was would only confuse him. All she could do was offer comfort.
In Wanderers 4 yrs ago Forum: 1x1 Roleplay
While Ysaryn went off, Kire entered the infirmary. A few healers milled about, waiting for any instructions from their mistress. Gavin was asleep, Elva was nearby, still watching Ruli like a hawk. Spotting Kire, she put a finger to her lips, then gestured for her to step closer. "Talk later," the healer whispered as she pulled Kire into an embrace, afterwards explaining the state of Ruli.

Kire looked down at him, and at once guilt got to her. He was trembling so much. She had had a taste of this poison before, and it had been hell. To know that he was feeling worse now tore at her. She was about to ask Elva to let her sleep nearby when Ruli opened his eyes, looking at her with red eyes. "I can't take you home yet, I'm sorry," she answered, even as she mentally calculated how soon she could muster a portal. Maybe if she napped for a couple of hours, she could manage at least one.

Before she could voice this, however, Ruli disappeared. "Oh, fuck!" Elva cursed. Nearby, Gavin woke with a start.
"Whuzzat?" He asked, bleary-eyed. "Oh, Kire! Wussrong?"
Shit, Kire muttered under her breath as Elva gave instructions to search for him.
"Where would he go?" The healer demanded from Kire and Gavin. "He's still too weak to be just mucking about! And it's too cold outside! He didn't go to his world, did he?"
"No--ah shit, he Walked," Gavin said, finally realizing, rubbing his face in frustration. "Alright, let me get up, I'll help."
"I'll find him, give me a blanket?" Kire asked.

She paced the manor for a few moments, centering herself, until at last she caught the signature. Huh. Kire tilted her head down. "Well?" Elva called.
Kire nodded. "Let me handle it." She was about to move when she paused, looking down at her dirty, bloody armor, the swords she was carrying. The way she looked now wasn't exactly a calming image. She unbuckled her belt, then took off the armor, before following the trail.

He was in the hot springs below. Kire paused, cautious, afraid she night spook him. "Ruli?" She called. Kire took a few, tentative steps, then stopped a couple of yards away. "Look, just listen for a bit," she said in as calm a voice as she could. "You need to recover a bit more. Even if I could, sending you through a portal might make you feel worse. And I've used up all my energy for portals. The most I can promise is to wait a few hours for me to recover my strength."

She sighed, then sat down cross-legged. "I'm sorry. That you have to through this. And for bringing you into this fight." She watched him, his body curled like that of a frightened, wounded animal. "Do you feel better here? If you promise to see Elva first thing tomorrow, I'll ask her to bring you pillows or something."
