Grace nodded slightly at the boy's words. "I think we can always learn new things." She mused aloud, perhaps not entirely on topic. "Trying to improve yourself is a good goal in life. It's something you can always be striving towards. Whether you want to be stronger or better informed or even just more confident in yourself." That last part was probably something she had to strive towards herself. She could imagine though, that the pressure for Kyle to be able to confidently control his powers was a little more necessary as his powers had the potential to be more destructive if left untamed.

She doubted anything like what happened in her younger years would happen again, she had felt a lot more confident in herself back then, and her powers had been stronger as a result. However as Kyle mentioned he was also open to making friends she smiled. "Honestly, I didn't think I'd make any friends this year." She admitted quietly. "I had kind of resigned myself to a year of quiet isolation." It was a little depressing to say aloud, but it was a truth she was not ashamed of. Truth be told over the years she'd developed the ability to be fairly happy on her own. In saying that thigh it was a lot nicer to have someone to talk to.
“I just… everyone was watching me.” She whispered back softly, letting her head fall slightly, her hair falling over her face. “I can’t control my powers when I’m nervous.” She knew her emotions often got the better of her, and that her ability to control her powers went out the window when she couldn’t keep her emotions in check. It was probably from being so used to trying to hide her powers in public. Had it just been her, then she would have been fine… maybe. It was still an application of her power she had never tried before.

Maybe Kyle was right. It was only day one. Maybe she just needed to practice. Maybe she’d be able to do it if it was just the teacher watching… but she didn’t know. She wasn’t even sure if she’d be alright with Kyle watching, before school she hadn’t thought he’d been able to see her. “You did so well though. Your dad did a really good job helping you learn to control your powers. It kind of made her wish her mother had been more proactive about helping her gain control over her powers, rather than just how to hide and suppress them.
Grace stood there nervously as others went, though she was mostly uninterested. Her powers were something she had, but she didn’t really like defining herself by them. As such she had never been interested in developing them that much, though her mother often said it was just because she was afraid of failure, which was also true. Until Kyle went up, that was. Upon hearing his surname called out she perked up slightly, eager to see how he handled himself. The fact that he removed his glasses got her curious to see why, especially since he kept his eyes closed.

Watching him was really… something. The way he moved… it was like he could see like everyone else. Though it just made her more confused, she knew he could see auras but she hadn’t though non-living things had auras too. When he was done, acting as if the impressive display had been nothing at all. She almost felt like clapping, even as he moved off to the other side. Another few students had their turn, and the groups were starting to get smaller when Grace heard the words she had been dreading. “Miss… Whyte?”

Anxiously Grace walked up to the court, even if people weren’t watching her, she felt her face growing red as the machines began wiring up. When the first ball fired at her she made a small noise of alarm as she quickly moved out of the way, nothing like the graceful movements Kyle had done. A few more shots and once again she dodged them, this time finding it a bit easier though she made no real attempt to use her powers. After another few Mr Steele paused the exercise to look at her. “Grace is it?” He asked uncertainly, looking at his clipboard. “You know you’re supposed to be trying to use your powers don’t you?”

“Well sir… it’s just… water… it doesn’t waste energy beating against things in its way. It just… moves around them…”

She was certain Mr Steele would have slapped himself in the face if he could. However he showed a great deal of restraint and simply told her to just attempt to use her powers, if she was able, for the exercise. Despite her own reluctance Grace tried to do the exercise the way she was supposed to. However with all the eyes on her it was just too hard to concentrate. She wasn’t the best at controlling her powers unless she wasn’t trying. So this was just too much pressure for her.

She did manage to create a few water streams that got in the balls way, however the ball sailed right through her shield attempts, usually hitting her shortly after. After a few rounds of that Mr Steele let her go and the girl quickly moved off the court, her face still red with embarrassment. And the best part was she had a whole year of this to look forward to.
Grace looked over as Kyle tapped her foot and spoke softly to her and she nodded slightly. “I wasn’t paying attention.” She whispered softly back. “And ‘practical application’ has never been my strong suit.” She quickly turned her attention back towards the front as Mr. Steele began speaking again.

“First off we’ll be splitting you guys into groups. From my experience, elementals are usually one of two classes, we have creators and manipulators. Creators can produce their element as will, but their control of it once produced is minimal. Manipulators are the opposite; they usually have control over their element, but are reliant on an existing source. Now, some of you fit into both of these categories, which is fine too. Some of you might find that as the year progresses you’ll begin to develop your abilities in the other category. So, for starters we’ll get you guys to group up. Creators here, manipulators there, anyone feeling like they fit into both over there.”

Grace gave Kyle a smile as she moved off into the manipulation group as Mr Steele went into an explanation of the next exercise. “See those machines down the other end of the court? We’re going to be using those to shoot tennis balls at you. The aim is to simply use your powers, however you see fit, to stop them from hitting you. Before we begin, are there any manipulators who we may have trouble finding materials for you to use?” Grace looked around and then shook her head slowly, noticing everyone else was doing the same.
“As much as I get the sibling rivalry thing, I’d prefer not to get my butt kicked too hard.” North said as they moved off into the training room. He wasn’t saying his hand to hand was bad… everyone here was selected because they were the best of the best; against any other soldier he’d feel fine. But Wash was known for his hand to hand; whilst he knew it was one of his personal weaknesses. Then again maybe stuff like that ran in the family. He knew South was a natural with a sniper, even if she was reluctant to use one.

Maybe hand to hand was the same with these two and he was making a horrible mistake. However when he got to the floor and found out Iowa had set up a draw all he could do was shrug. Ideally he would have liked to be paired with Alaska, and that was not because he thought he had any advantage over her in any way, especially not because she was a girl. It was just that she had been the one he’d come here with, he hadn’t even expected the other two to be here. As it were luck was not on his side and he drew Iowa.

Holding up the card he glanced over to the man and shrugged slightly with a small smile as he moved off to one side of the room, leaving the siblings to fight it out.
North looked up curiously when Cal mentioned he was going to look for South to see if he could help her. He hadn’t really thought that the man was into that kind of stuff, but then again his words made sense. However she had asked not to be disturbed, and he knew how she could get when she was focused on her computer stuff, sometimes she spent days locked away, barely eating or sleeping. It was almost like she was in a trance sometimes. He was about to advise Cal against it when he brought up the reason he hadn’t slept well.

Instantly his face flushed a slight red and his mouth, which had been open to speak a moment ago, closed quickly in a small grimace and he simply turned to look at his food, taking a few, unenthusiastic bites as Cal spoke to Alaska before wheeling off. Eventually he looked up to Alaska and offered her a small, shy smile, still feeling the redness in his cheeks cased by Cal so boldly stating why he was off his game. “He’s not wrong.” He eventually said, trying to shrug it off now that it was just Alaska and himself. It was just her, he supposed, Alaska always seemed very in control of everything.

She rarely had a moment that he’d noticed where she’d lost her cool and did anything other than what a good soldier should do. It put him off a little, because she did intimidate him slightly if he was being honest, especially since Cal had just outed why he hadn't slept well. He doubted Alaska would have been affected by such a thing. “Feel like joining me for a bit of training?” North eventually offered, giving her a careless and easy smile now. “I could probably brush up on my close combat if you’re keen?”
North smiled at Cal, though he wasn’t sure what the point was, the man could see right through the forced action and he knew it. Maybe it was more of a sign of ‘I’m alright’. However Alaska called him right out on it and he simply gave her the same attempt at a smile. “I just didn’t sleep well.” He assured her, answering both their questions at the same time. He decided not to go into detail on the answer though, since he thought the others would think he was being stupid if he told them that he couldn’t sleep because of South’s absence.

Somehow ‘the room was too quiet’ or ‘it had a different feeling’ just didn’t sound like answers that he should be giving. Alaska may understand, but then again her and her brother had been separated a lot longer than he and South had, and it wasn’t fair comparing because both sets of siblings had drastically different dynamics and relationships. So instead he decided to focus on the other topic he had quick access to. “Clearly Cal had a good night’s sleep, I might need to borrow some of the drugs they gave you.” He said with a small chuckle.

“Seriously though it’s nice to see you… half way up? Too soon? Are you sure you should be up and about all ready?” He was sure the doctors, not to mention Iowa, would probably disagree with the move. But at the same time he understood what it was like to want to get out of a hospital as soon as possible. So long as Cal wasn’t doing any more damage to himself North really had no objections to it. Cal was a good guy, he knew his limits better than anyone else so North was sure he would be fine.
North wasn’t so much eating his breakfast, as he was pushing it around with the fork in his hands, his appetite unusually absent. He didn’t eat as much as his sister, but he liked to have regular meal times. He hadn't slept well the night before, which is what he put down to the odd lack of hunger. It had been too quiet. It was odd how accustomed he’d become to the sound of someone sleeping in the same room as him. And so to have that presence gone made for an unsettling silence that had him up for a majority of the night.

He had considered going to check on Cal but it was still a little early and he figured that he could use the rest. He hoped the others would be up soon, it was always a more calming environment when they were all together, even though that usually only happened around meals and missions, one of which was not a very settling experience at all. Cal’s still whispered quietly in his head, giving North some unsettling shivers. The idea that there were ulterior motives behind all of this brought up too many questions that he was willing to admit he was worried about finding out the answers to. What had he and his sister really gotten themselves into?
That's fine :) My net should be getting fixed soon so I'll reply then
-I may also be interested in doing OC pairings if you're not comfortable with canon if the idea is good ^_^
