So much nothing...Where is the sun?

lol sometimes npc's can help to significantly move a plot along. They can also make for great scenery. At some point, aren't we going to hit a reality that has people in it? Those townsfolk are npc's. If we kill one of them, they might not notice for a while. If we do it in public, we could potentially have a riot on our hands. If we make friends with them, we might gain knowledge of an artifact or an anomaly. Maybe a place to stay like an inn or tavern. Maybe a thief takes something of ours and we hunt him down. You can kill and npc thief. So on etc.
This place...I can't see an easy way out...where are we?
*It didn't take long for Ritter to begin assessing the state of the reality around them. It was twisted and strange, as if it wasn't really reality. Yet it was as palpable as the real thing.*
Obviously someone has to play them. We cant install a automated reply sytem. I'm thinking more along the lines of non player characters. Characters that don't really belong to one player. Their more like an extension of the player characters, allowing them to further explore their personalty and develop their character as a whole. (Like showing off the more lethal abilities of all these op characters since you naturally cant auto hit or kill anyone.) Also, because of this fact, their disposable.

*Ritter pauses, looking around as if it see's something. But there's nothing but sandy dunes and emptiness.*

It's basically just a character one of us makes(usually the thread gm) which we fight for an unknown amount of time and eventually kill.
lol like fights with temporary characters. Say we encounter a flock of evil gargoils or a giant shark bear or something. That would be an npc.
Then I don't know....get it?
