Lord Green drummed his fingers on the table as he waited for the rest of the council to speak their piece, once they were done, he spoke up: "If necessary Madame Greywind, I will chip in for the utility bills. *cough* Someone has to do it."

Well, I'm sort of waiting.

Yeah, I get ya. I just PMed CorinTraven, basically saying if he's too busy to post we should try and work something out. Unless if you are waiting on something else.

Lord Green calmly listened to Lord Pentaphraxis's proposal, and once everyone else was done talking, he said his piece: "Lord Jarvis, using the word 'slave-driver' may have cost you this vote. However, I am under the impression that since each part of the management requires support from their underlings, the 'drivers' will not mistreat their workers. You have my support."

On the flip side, his people can't really do anything on land.Though I do find it kinda strange that it's been so long and they've never met a single person from the surface. I mean, I'm certain people have been fishing in their waters for centuries.EDIT: Wait... What are those spears made of? I can't see the people having invented metal forging and I can't see a bunch of bone/stone spears managing to tear sizable holes in a ship's hull that easily.

Alright, maybe this is due to my failure to explain the nature of the merfolk through my IC posts, but there are quite a few reasons as to why merfolk aren't familiar with the surface world. First and foremost is that the ocean is a very much 3-dimensional territory. In the ocean, one can go several miles above or below someone else without noticing the other. And since the merfolk have problems seeing in sunlight, they would rather remain deeper in the ocean. Only the truly desperate go to look for fish near the surface. So as nations prosper and fish more, there is less fish to go around, and thus more merfolk get more desperate to get closer to the surface of the ocean.

Secondly, the racial memory of the merfolk is astoundingly low. Since this race is meant to more resemble fish than mammals, the maximum lifespan of a merfolk is 20 years. The oldest Merfolk would barely remember the Clinton Presidency, whereas the oldest humans can remember F.D.R's term of office and even earlier than that. Considering the fact the only way for these people to even remember the extremely rare ship encounters is written records (which in this time period, few could read and write) combined with the fact these people have never been unified until extremely recently, one can assume that no organized effort was taken against ships until now. While a few broods may have sunk a ship at one point, the broods historically don't last very long, a few years at most, thus losing a lot of records of what even happened. Those on the surface attributed lost ships to storms and pirates, both were common for the time period.

Alright, if we compound the fact that ship-encounters are rare, with the fact that most encounters are forgotten to the race at large due to: illiteracy, lack of government, and short life-spans then it seems quite reasonable that until now that ships were relatively unknown.

Also, about the spears. They are bone yes, but in all honesty bone is stronger than wood. I did double-check to make sure, and bone surprisingly does have a higher ultimate tensile strength than wood. If you account for the fact that these guys charged at the ship from below, it is not too unreasonable that they were able to break the hull. I don't think they would be able to if they didn't charge, and besides a few guys with buckets can handle the leaking of the ship for now.
Aight, I'd like to explain my reasoning for going after Sara's ship in particular. For one, I wanted to do something interesting, I.E not just sink some random merchant vessel. Secondly, Naaru influence does not end at their borders. While that may mark the end of where they live, just like all of your nations, one can send out scouting parties beyond one's borders. Even the waters of North Eastern Fristreek aren't terribly far away, but few would have reason to go that far. Since the leader of the scouting party seeks a really impressive ship to sink, it would be reasonable that they would go out farther than they normally would. So even if the ship was not circumnavigating the globe, it would make sense for the ship to be attacked. What wouldn't make sense is me claiming its under the Naaru Dominion under the second heading. I'll change it (or not) whenever Fiegling makes a decision if this is just the old world or not.
~Naaru Dominion, Deephome~

Within the waters of Deephome, Danassa sat on her throne of whale-bone. Another, younger and far poorer, mermaid was infront of her, clutching several engraved tablets of stone. The High-Mother broke the silence: "[Speak scribe, and do not attempt to deceive me with fanciful tales.]" She gripped a spear of bone with her webbed hands while glaring at the commoner before her.

The scribe nervously smiled with her pointed teeth and said: "[Uhm, but of course High-Mother. We have come to the conclusion that these 'skimmers' are not beasts, but constructions of intelligent races. We als-]"

"[I thought I had told you not to deceive me with fanciful tales.]"

The scribe cringed at the accusation: "[I haven't been! Look!]" The scribe began to frantically show the high-mother of several carvings of ships, humans, and satyrs on hunks of stone. "[All of these drawings are done by different scribes, do you truly believe that one such as me would be able to convince so many to undertake such a lie?]" The scribe pointed to a carving of a ship: "[These things are not... natural to say the least, what else but intelligent beings could construct such a device?]"

The High-Mother relaxed the grip of her spear: "[Perhaps... you are right.]" She paused for a brief moment then continued, "[However, I still want to know more about these beings and these ships before I take great action. You may go, scribe.]" Never had someone left Danassa's chamber so quickly. Afterwards, she looked over the several carvings of the ships and its inhabitants for several hours. Finally she came to a decision, and called her son Aeo to her chambers. The dutiful Aeo arrived within minutes and quickly prostrated himself before Danassa. She simply said: "[Rise, my son Aeo.]"

Aeo, a young merman covered with the bones of slain merfolk, did as he was bid: "[Yes, High Mother?]"

In Danassa's heart she felt a great pride for this son, but she betrayed none of these feelings outwardly as she decreed: "[Aeo, you are to sink one of these... skimmers, and bring one to me for further study. Is this understood?]"

Aeo who so desired to please Danassa replied: "[Yes, Great High Mother, I will not fail you.]"

"[Then go, take as many Naaru as you need. The future of our race may hang in the balance.]"

~Naaru Dominion, off the coast of Fristreek~

Some time later, after Aeo had gathered a school of fifty Naaru, he had found a target. Off of the coast of Fristreek, there was a ship sailing towards the Kingdom of Marmon for the high feast. Perhaps out of some unfortunate twist of fate, Aeo had targeted the ship of Lady Sara. In all honesty however, it was quite deliberate. Aeo had passed several opportunities to seize a ship, for who sought to please the High-Mother, wanted to seize the grandest ship he could. And what was more grand than a ship of a great noble? Not that he knew that it possessed anyone of importance, he simply recognized the ship for being as impressive as it was.

And thus, under a full moon, Aeo began his assault of the vessel. Well trained and disciplined, Aeo commanded that his men do not speak before they strike, remain in formation, and never breach the surface of the water. The school dived deep into the ocean, and rose directly under the vessel. In one swift charge their spears were driven into the wood with an audible crunch, and water began to flow into the ship. Those asleep aboard the ship had a rude awakening, the battle had begun.

Lord Green was the first to speak after Lord Jarvis: "I agree with Lord Pentaphraxis in this regard, I would advise all of you to focus more heavily on the survival of our glorious Dahken."

He paused for a brief moment while fumbling for his data-pad, and after finally pulling it out of his suit jacket he continued:

"As you will soon see, if you had not already known, the greatest problem that faces our city is the hunger of our people, and the lack of work."

He pushed a few buttons on his datapad and it was linked to the hologram system of the council chamber, and several graphs appeared with titles such as: Percent of Dahken's population that has gone without consuming a proper meal or Dahken's unemployment rate. After a brief coughing fit, the old man continued: "As you all can see, the greatest problems our city faces are hunger and unemployment. While some of you might believe that these problems can be brushed aside, I would advise you to think differently. Out of desperation crime is born, and our city may face greater civil unrest should we not solve these problems. We have a paltry military as it is, and it would cost more to keep the increased unrest in check. We must feed our people now before this situation spirals out of control. And, that doesn't take into account the opportunistic Prospero who is already sowing the seeds of discord with our citizenry."

He pauses for a short time, looking about the room, then continues:

"Now, I believe I have a solution to this problem. Should we legislate that all factory owners decrease the hours of the workers of our factories from 10 to 12 hours a day, to 8 hours a day, as I have done, then more workers will be required to do the same amount of labor. Since this is the case, many of our unemployed would cease to be such, and have the means to provide themselves with food. Now, I know that some of you are loathe to decrease the productivity of your factories, and thus I would argue that the increased wealth amongst the common man would lead to them purchasing more goods produced by Dahken's industry, and this in turn increases the demand for labor in Dahken. Within this cycle of wealth, all would prosper. Eventually, our production of assets would exceed our current amount. Perhaps in a year or so, perhaps more, but eventually this plan will bring us all prosperity. What say all of you to this plan?"

Tap, tap, tap went Lord Green's cane as he strode through the citadel. He wore a simple suit, nothing too garish, with a fedora that had the logo of Green Enterprises strewn across the top. He had in his suit jacket a small datapad that held everything he needed to know at his fingertips. He walked into the council chambers, with an air of confidence about him. The old man noticed Lanc had several papers with him, and had arrived before anyone else. Lord Green called out to Master Lanc as he took a seat: "Greetings Master Lanc, I see you have made quite a few plans."
I'm not sure if its just me, or does everyone seem to be really passive-aggressive in OOC chat?

Audio Log 001:

With the whirr of the audio log starting up, one can hear an old hoarse voice:
I've decided to keep an audio log of my going's on in the high council. I believe I will be taking on a far more difficult undertaking than I ever did as the CEO of Green Enterprises. A man was giving a speech today who was already criticizing*the log in interrupted by a fit of coughing* What was I saying? Oh right. A man was giving a speech today who was already criticizing us, even though none of us had actually had enough time to alleviate *cough* the problems of this city. Praise be to the honorable knight who defended the high-council. I have decided that I will thank him for this service. I have also received messages from Master Lanz and Lord Jarvis requesting my presence for a meeting. I will shortly send my approval of such an idea. *Green's calm tone is overtaken by anger* There is evil within the heart of at least one of our council members... Lady Greywind proposes we solve Dahken's problems by pressing the poor into service! She suggests such an outrageous act, then demands that she be made Minister of State! She can*Green is interrupted by a fit of coughing, and calms down by the end of it* In conclusion of this audio-log, I believe I will contact the steward for the possibility of donating food to the poor. Perhaps many such acts of kindness will wipe clean the darkness of my soul. *more coughing can be heard as he fumbles for the end recording button, and the audio log ends with a click.*
