No problem....done deal.
You have my attention.

I'm considering The Atom...but with a couple of variances from the classic character. Nothing major (Gender and Ethnicity Changes).
Interesting.
Bud parked his 1971 Chrysler Sheriff's car at the Sheriff's office and walked about a block up the street to Celia's Diner. It was a typical eating place for the area, everyone knew everyone, there was a radio playing country and western in the background, florescent lights and some tables scattered around with a eating bar and a few booths. It wasn't anything fancy but it was the only game in town, but Miss Celia made sure that the food was good enough to keep the competition away.

Bud walked into the diner and there was the usual assortment of characters. Mostly blue collar types on their way to work, or some of the farmers gathered in the corner talking about the news of the day. The topic of the day was President Nixon and how he was the right man to turn Vietnam around. There were a couple of people who called out to Bud, and he politely replied, "Mornin' all."

Bud sat an open table and within a few seconds Arlene his usually waitress walked over wearing a brown t-shirt and blue jeans. The red haired beauty asked while giving Bud a copy of the morning paper, "Hey there Bud. Your usual?"

Bud nodded taking the paper and saying, "You got it young lady and thank you very much."

She gave a quick wink and said, "I'll be back with your coffee."

Bud gave another nod and replied, "Ahh nothing better than a cup from here." Arlene walked away and Bud opened up the paper. It wasn't a local paper because the town wasn't big enough for a local paper. It was from Siler City about 25 miles away but they had been known to write about O'Connor County from time to time. Bud started skimming through the paper when one of the patrons asked, "Hey Bud, your boy gonna lead us to one more State Title run before he goes off to college?"

Looking up from his paper Bud thought for a moment and replied, "I like to think so. It's gonna take a huge effort though from the secondary. Lonnie Jenkins and Andy Polly are two huge losses to overcome." There were a couple of nods as Arlene came back with his coffee and said, "Breakfast will be coming up in just a bit Bud."

Bud replied, "Thank you Arlene." Taking a sip of his coffee, which had two sugars and a tablespoon of cream, Bud was a bit lost in thought about Eddie's last year. He had two scholarship offers on the table. One from Mississippi State University and the other from the University of Georgia. He and El were hoping for MSU because it was close by, but Eddie was leaning towards Georgia. He was longing for adventure in the big city, and the Dawgs were coming off of an 11-1 record while MSU was struggling. Bud and El told Eddie that the decision was his to make and they would support him, but Bud knew watching his son leave was going to hurt him. It was going to hurt him more than he could ever admit even to El. Eddie was his first born son, and it was another sign that things were about to change. He loved Ruth-Ann and was proud of her. Bud knew that his one regret so far, in terms of his plan, was that he would probably not be there to walk her down the aisle. That hurt him as well but he knew what needed to be done.

Just then one of his deputies Leroy Biggs and his wife Janet walked into the diner. Arlene walked over and greeted them and ushered them to a table. Janet was about eight months along as Leroy helped guide her to table. Leroy looked over and saw Bud there he said, "Mornin'."

Bud raised his cup and said, "Hey there Leroy. Mornin' Janet. How are things coming along?"

Janet replied, "About another three weeks. Doc Leonard says everything looks just fine."

Bud gave a nod and said, "Great to hear." Leroy said, "I'll be over to the office as soon as I can." Bud shook his head once and raised a hand slightly said, "Don't worry about it. When the new boss in your life shows up in about three weeks chances for you and Janet to get out will be very slim. Take your time I think we can hold things down for a couple of hours without you." He shot a wink to Janet as Arlene came over with a plate of four pancakes, three strips of bacon, and two slices of toast. She said, "Here you go Bud." Bud looked up at Arlene and said, "Thank you very much dear."

As Bud began to eat he glanced over at Leroy one more time and then concentrated on his food. Leroy was one of three African-American deputies on the force. He brought Leroy on about a year ago while Trace Sanders and Brian Watson right after he was elected. Bud felt an enormous sense of gratitude to the African-Americans in the town especially the Sanders family. During a bad rain storm in 1962 the river threatened to flood the town, and everyone was pitching to reinforce the levy with sandbags. Bud's father John fell in the river and almost drowned. Until Emmett Sanders jumped in and saved John's life. From that moment on Bud vowed he would help the African-Americans in anyway he could. He had it set up that when he met his "untimely demise" Trace would takeover as acting Sheriff.

After he finished his meal Bud walked towards the cash register. He looked over at Leroy and said, "See you in a couple of hours." He replied, "Yes sir Sheriff Dawkins." Bud looked at him almost disapprovingly and said, "It's Bud remember that please." He looked at Janet and said, "You need anything give us a call." She replied, "Thank you Sheriff."

Bud smiled as he turned back to the register. Celia Tyner walked over and said, "Hey there Bud nice to see you as always." Bud replied, "Likewise Celia." Celia leaned in and said, "Clem wanted me to tell you that he found the varnish for the rocking chair for Janet. It'll be ready next week."

Bud nodded as he glanced over to the Biggs' table and then back to Celia and said, "Great to hear. I know Clem doesn't do much wood working anymore, but there's no one else I trust for this job except for him. Thank you Celia." Bud pulled out two fifties he said, "One is a little extra for the work Clem has done for me, and the other should cover my bill and anything that Leroy and Janet want. It's on me." Celia, with her mouth open, said, "Bud you don't have to do that for us." Bud nodded and replied, "Oh yes I do. Now take it or I'll have you arrested for annoying the Sheriff." Celia took the money and said, "Well I can't have that."

With a quick wink and a smirk Bud replied, "That's more like it." He gave a nod and walked out of the diner and onto the office.

Rhiannon Palmer stood off to the side of the conference room in Hollester Hall glancing out the window at the campus. It was one of those "joyous" campus occasions she "lived" for called the welcoming mixer. This one was a bit different in that they were not only welcoming a new faculty members, but also one who also was the new department chair. Getting to hire astronomer Dr. Kent Nelson from FSU was a huge deal, but it came at the expense of Rhiannon not getting the position of department chair. A position that many in the department thought, not only was a shoo-in, but she deserved it. She sipped on a bottle of water very slowly as her friend Dr. Celia Becker walked over to her carrying a glass of white zin.

Celia said, "Well at least with this being in the middle of the day there is a bright side."

Rhiannon took a sip and and asked, "And that is?"

Celia replied, "With this being in the middle of the day classes aren't being held. We do a little bit of the schmoozing and then we cut out of here and head off to 'Charley's Place' and do Tequila shooters until we pass out."

Chuckling a bit Rhiannon said, "I forgot sometimes which one of us is the bad influence again? You know I can't drink in case I get a phone call, but I will gorge myself on some cheese fries while you get boiled." Not only was it because of her family situation that Rhiannon didn't drink, but one time she had a couple of drinks and then changed into The Atom. When that happened her body hadn't finished processing the alcohol. Which meant not only was she six-inches tall but she was falling down drunk. She was so drunk she didn't have the ability to focus to turn back into Rhiannon Palmer for almost two hours.

Celia said with a smile, "That's my girl my favorite designated driver." Celia took a sip of her wine and then asked, "How is your dad?"

Rhiannon looked at Celia for a second and composed herself. She said looking out the window again, "He's still alive, and that's about all I can say C. Metropolis plays Central City on Thanksgiving night. It's a prime-time game and so the Stallions are going to retire his number officially that night. Which will probably be his last public appearance according to mom." Rhiannon shook her head slowly and said, "More than likely he'll be gone before the Super Bowl."

Celia put her hand on Rhiannon's shoulder and said, "I'm sorry Ray." Rhiannon looked over at Celia and replied, "Thanks C." Turning back to the window Rhiannon asked, "So have you met our Lord and Savior Dr. Kent Nelson yet?"

Just then Rhiannon heard a different voice reply, "Oh no need for such lofty titles Dr. Palmer. When I'm here you can just call me Dr. Nelson." Rhiannon felt her eyes grow wide as she saw her career going down in flames. She turned to see Dr. Kent Nelson with a cup of coffee standing behind her and Celia as she said, "Oh my Lord." Nelson responded, "Again Dr. Palmer just call me Dr. Nelson." He turned to Celia and said, "Dr. Becker a pleasure to meet you as well." She replied, "Likewise my Lord I mean Dr. Nelson. Would you two excuse me I think I saw them getting ready to bring out the buffet."

Celia quickly left and Rhiannon looked at Dr. Nelson and said, "I am so sorry Dr. Nelson. I didn't mean to disparage you or to imply anything."

Nelson nodded and replied, "It's all right Dr. Palmer. You're the first honest person I've met since I got here. Everyone has been kissing my ass and, to borrow from you, expecting me to walk on water. Not to mention that there are many here who felt you should be in this position. So they look at me like I just nuked Disneyland and canceled Christmas."

Rhiannon said, "Well again I'm sorry Dr. Nelson for what I said you've earned your place in the scientific community and we're lucky to have you. If there's anything I can do to help you please let me know."

Nelson replied taking a sip, "It's Kent and I could use a tour guide around here. This place isn't exactly Tallahassee, and afterwards I could make us dinner I make a mean steak sandwich."

Rhiannon said, "Well I'm kind of busy with my dad, the semester just getting underway, and I got this other group I volunteer to help out with, but I think I can..."

Just then her earrings began to vibrate very slowly. That could only mean one thing...

Rhiannon quickly grabbed her cell phone and looked at it as if it was the cause of her distraction. She said, "Uh-oh it's an emergency."

Nelson asked, "Your family?" Rhiannon looked a little surprised for a moment and then Nelson replied, "I make it my business to know as much as I can about my colleagues, and I'm sorry to hear about your dad."

Rhiannon said, "Thank you Kent, and yeah it's a family issue. I was supposed to make a couple of remarks welcoming you to the department though but this..." Rhiannon looked pained and torn.

Nelson replied, "I'll explain it to President Winters don't worry go take care of your family Dr. Palmer."

Rhiannon said somewhat relieved, "Thank you Kent." As she turned to leave she looked back and said, "Oh by the way it's Rhiannon." She smiled and Kent gave a nod and replied, "A pleasure Rhiannon."

Quickly Rhiannon left the room and looked around. Seeing no one nearby she tapped her earrings twice and heard...

PRIORITY ALERT
UNKNOWN ASSAILANTS IN S.T.A.R. LABS, TOKYO
MULTIPLE CIVILIAN FATALITIES
PLEASE RESPOND

She shook her head and said, "Duty calls." Rhiannon sprinted back to her office and closed the door. She quickly pulled up the name of a restaurant near S.T.A.R Labs and said, "That'll work." Rhiannon closed the blinds and said, "Showtime." Rhiannon closed her eyes, concentrated, and within seconds she could feel herself getting smaller. Rhiannon opened her eyes and saw that she was wearing the familiar costume of The Atom. Quickly she floated up to her desk and dialed the number of the restaurant. Once she heard an answer Atom shrunk to microscopic size and rode the phone signal all the way to Tokyo.

THE ATOM

RHIANNON PALMER ♦ PROFESSOR ♦ GOTHAM CITY UNIVERSITY ♦ JUSTICE LEAGUE
C H A R A C T E R C O N C E P T:

"If good things come in small packages I'm the best there is."

Rhiannon Palmer was born and raised in Metropolis. Her father Thomas was the QB for the Metropolis Stallions, a four time Super Bowl Champion and four time league MVP while her mother Alice was an author. In Metropolis the family was royalty and life was a sweet as it could get for Rhiannon. However Rhiannon hated the limelight and didn't like that people wanted to get to know her because of who her family was and not who she was. Although she shunned the limelight and longed for privacy Rhiannon loved her parents and had a good home life.

When she graduated high-school Rhiannon went to Gotham City University so she could make her name on her terms. Rhiannon graduated with her PHD in molecular biology and was hired by the CDC and was sent to work their facility in Central City. Rhiannon was one of the brightest and best scientists in the CDC, and she loved what she did until one day changed everything.

A meteorite pulsating with unknown and unparalleled energy crashed outside of Central City and the CDC was called to investigate. Rhiannon was the lead investigator and she ordered the meteorite to be taken to their facility. Once it arrived the meteorite was placed in a secured room under the highest security protocols for testing. Rhiannon carried the meteorite into the testing chamber. As they were getting ready to run their tests there was a power surge that managed to knock the security measures off line which meant the protective shielding was starting to collapse as well. Unfortunately the door closed and locked trapping Rhiannon in the room with the meteorite and when the protective shielding collapsed it exposed her to the full energy for over five minutes. Even in her isolation suit there was no promises that Rhiannon wasn't going to be affected somehow. The crew managed to finally retrieve the unconscious Rhiannon and get her to the isolation ward.

After two weeks in isolation and a seemingly endless array of tests being run it was determined that Rhiannon was unaffected, but she knew something was wrong with her. While she was on medical leave Rhiannon was at her apartment cleaning up when she noticed an earring had fallen into a vent. Rhiannon concentrated on trying to reach the earring, and then suddenly she noticed the earring was getting closer and bigger. The next thing Rhiannon knew the earring was the size of a mountain. Rhiannon at first was terrified to find that she had shrunk and was wondering if it was permanent. Rhiannon concentrated and returned to normal size. She went down to the CDC and ran some more in-depth tests in herself. Rhiannon discovered that the energy from the meteorite had mutated her pituitary gland. It was a gradual process and on such a small scale that the original tests missed it. Rhiannon discovered through her testing that she had the ability to shrink down to microscopic size, and the ability to shift her weight so even at (for example) six inches tall she can have weight and strength as though she were her normal size. Can also shift her weight so that she can float on air currents and travel along cell-phone signals.

Rhiannon kept this discovery to herself but knew she had been given these powers for a reason and decided it was time to use them in the fight for justice. She stayed many late nights at the CDC "borrowing" certain materials to make her costume. Rhiannon decided to leave the CDC because she didn't want to stay too much longer in case questions would be raised.

Rhiannon decided to move to Gotham where she is currently a Professor at Gotham City University. She has a name picked out for her crime fighting alter-ego; "The Atom."

C H A R A C T E R M O T I V A T I O N S & G O A L S:

Out of all the characters I have ever played this one is my favorite. I know this character better than any other character I've ever played in all my years. I like that with this one I can have her take out a team of thugs, and then the next minute Rhiannon realizes that she is standing in a wad of gum and knows that it'll take her a good ten minutes to get out of it. I want to people to realize that while her powers may not seem imposing she makes tremendous use of them, and she is an effective crime fighter.

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:

1) Her parents live in Metropolis and her father is dying from cancer. 2) She was pregnant while in college, but lost the baby when she was in a car accident 2 months away from delivery.
