I laughed. "Nope, the only flying I've ever done was on my way out of town to training camp, when I left home. Before being drafted, I'd never been out of my town, let alone any states." I told her, adjusting the headset over my ears.
Hopefully we'd never have to go back to that place, I knew we would, after all, the orders we'd just been given were quite clear, but I still hoped. "Ever been in a helicopter before?" I said leaning closer to Daisy so she could hear me.
Clambering into the helicopter behind Daisy, I dumped my backpack in front of me as I sat down, clicking my seatbelt in place. The man by the door, counted heads and nodded to the driver before sliding the helicopter door shut. After he shut the door he turned to us and motioned for us to put on the headsets that had been allocated to us. "This flight will take about an hour to two hours tops. Hope no one needs to pee." He said once we all had them on, and then gave us a thumbs up.
I cleared my throat and laughed nervously. "Uh, yes, Sir. Thank you, Sir, thanks." I said with a small smile before quickly returning to my seat. General Jones laughed again and shook his head. "Now, I'm counting on you kids, so you come back with my men and you'll be rewarded. Every single one of you. Hear me?" We all nodded as he waited for a response. "Good, now get out of here and get going. I'll see you soon."
I listened intently. The tropics. Okay, that's one place away from here, but I just had one issue. "Sir." I stood up, stopping General Jones from leaving. He turned to look at me with a raised eyebrow. "Uh, General Jones, sir. If this is a rescue mission, how do we return home once we have found the soldiers? Sir..." I continued suddenly nervous under his gaze.
"Neither do I. Not in this aspect." I said as we turned the corner of the street that the hall was on. "They don't know any of us, what strengths we have. They've probably just randomly selected us out. They probably don't know what to expect with us, but I doubt that'll stop them."
I smiled and led the way to the door of our cabin. Opening it up, I let Daisy through first before following her out. The hall was only around the corner, so would take less than five minutes to get there. "A mission huh? That was fast." I looked at Daisy as I spoke, sliding my hands in to my pockets.
I stared at the woman in the doorway, not sure if I had heard her correctly. A mission... Now? We had just arrived, this was ridiculous. With an annoyed sigh, I looked around me, taking my orders, 'Gather your things'... Standing up, I pulled my dirty jacket from the end of my bed and slouched into it. "Right" I said and turned to face Daisy. "Ready to get out of here?"
I looked at Daisy, thinking over the words she just said. "I agree. If we do some digging I'm sure we could figure a lot of things out. For one, do you even know why the war started, because I don't. What are we even supposed to be fighting for?" I asked dropping my eyes to my knees. I felt useless here, I wanted to good, just like Daisy said. Make a difference.
I sighed, annoyed that we lost our base and wound up here. "Why? You know, why did they attack? Of all bases, ours. Why?" I asked running my hands through my short hair, there was nothing special at our base, no one special. Was it just a blitz attack? Like the one Daisy performed a few months ago, but on a larger scale. Maybe it was just some random soldier who wanted to start something, make a mess somewhere.
