Calvin paid little attention to the sorting ceremony, just peering across the hall as the whole thing passed. He didn't care in the slightest. Sure, he'd been a little curious as to where he'd have his dorm room and what colour of robe he'd have, but the whole separation of the different houses was a pretty stupid idea to him, it just encouraged bullying and anti-social behaviour. Luckily, he and his friends had broken that wall and been able to treat eachother like human beings regardless of which house they were from, in fact Calvin had, in the past, forgotten that they were even in separate houses. It made little difference to him.
Calvin had noticed Adrianne, Adelie's sister, sit down beside him. He didn't acknowledge her at first as he knew that she liked to cause trouble and spent a lot of her time actively trying to make her sister's life harder. He didn't get it. He too had a brother who he wasn't exactly best friends with, but he couldn't understand why siblings would want to make eachothers lives hell. He had never tried to get on Miles' nerves, at least, not without a good reason. He looked away, ignoring whatever it was she was doing - because chances were, it wasn't something positive. At that exact time, a piece of enchanted paper flew towards him and landed in front of him. It was written in quite an elegant manner and read 'Do you guys want to meet up tonight somewhere private?'. He recognised it as Adelie's handwriting. He glanced her way and nodded, before sending the letter Zef's way.
Adrienne made her way over to the Ravenclaw table and was about to sit with her friends towards one end where most of the 5th years were congregating. She glanced further down however, and saw Calvin, making her smirk. She motioned for her friends to follow her before silently taking a seat next to the older guy, smiling at him even though he seemed to be awfully distracted by the ceremony taking place. Or he was simply ignoring her. Though that thought didn't cross her mind.
Over summer break, Adrienne had done some sneaking in Adelie's room, and found a journal. Shed begun flipping through it, seeing notes and marks about different subjects. Boring, boring boring. She almost set the writing aside, when Calvin's name jumped out at her from one of the pages. Hesitating and looking around to make sure her sister was nowhere near, Adrienne read about a little confession Adelie had written in the pages about a dream involving her oldest friend. Adrienne had laughed and decided to keep the story she
d just read stored in her memory to use against her sister as soon as possible.
When Adrienne had seen the empty seat next to Calvin then, she simply had to take it. She was constantly trying to out do her sister and if she could win over Adelie's crush well, it would be her best victory over her sister yet. Long blonde hair rest on her shoulders, and curious blue eyes glancing over at the piece of paper Cal had in front of him, Adrienne managed to see the word private written in Adelie's script. Scoffing under her breath, she watched the boy nod to her sister, while Adrienne simply grinned deviously at her.
"Calvin..." Adrienne said in a smooth tone, lacking the accent her sister had so thickly.
Glancing Adrienne's way as she greeted him and deciding to try his hardest not to be rude and appear as if he did not know she was a pain, Calvin pretended as if he had not seen her when she had first arrived. "Oh, hey Adrienne," he nodded. He had hoped that she would not talk to him, but then again - why else would she be here? "What's up?" He asked calmly.
Adrienne smiled, and to most it would appear friendly and perky. To Adelie or anyone that knew Adrienne, it was the smile she wore when she was being a shark, and everyone else was bleeding fish. "I was curious about something... Do you, well, you know, have a girl?" she asked, forcing a light blush to her cheeks that bespoke innocence.
Calvin inwardly rolled his eyes. Here we go again. As if he couldn't see this coming. He knew that there was some sort of plot behind her questions. He didn't for a moment believe here pseudo blush nor her reluctance to ask the question. He decided to pretend not to know, just for everyone's sake. "I don't really think that it's your business," he sighed. He knew that she wanted an answer and would continue to bite for it, so he shook his head. "But no."
Adrienne watched Calvin's expression and raised an eyebrow when he determined his relationship status was none of her business. But, he soon produced an answer that returned the smile to her face. "Good. Wouldn't want anyone getting jealous of my new study partner now would we?" she said softly, so those around them couldnt hear if they tried. "After all, a good, 7th year Ravenclaw should have no problem helping out a fellow Housemate and 5th year. You've already taken all my classes..." she said, bringing a more casual look to her face.
Calvin smirked for a moment. He could see what was happening now. Adrienne was obviously trying to make a rift between he and Adelie, to stop their friendship. That would make Adrienne's day, to see her sister lose a good friend of hers. Unfortunately, her plan wasn't going to work. He shook his head, faking reluctance. "I'm sorry, but I don't think that I'm the right person to be asking for this. My grades kinda' speak for themselves. If you want some real advice, maybe speak to a prefect. Sorry."
Adrienne smirked. Well, loyal, wasn't he? Plan B then. "Well, that is a shame." She sighed, looking around them for a brief second before directing her eyes to Cal alone now and looking no longer shy and sweet. "I don't know if you're aware, but I can make Adelies life hell. And I will. If you dont agree to pretend to tutor me at least twice a week for the rest of the semester. Whenever I say. If you don't well, then Adelie will probably worse off than if you just do it," she hissed, eyes seeming to have flames flickering in them.
Jesus. The truth was coming out, huh. Calvin had seen her play a lot of snide tricks over the years but this one was just cruel. To be fair, it was sort of foolproof, too. He didn't know a way around it. He could tell Adelie that she had brought this up, but then Adrienne would probably find out and follow up on her threat. He remained silent for a moment, his face without emotion. He glanced away, peering over at the front of the hall as he spoke. "I mean, if I have to, I'll do it, but let me ask you one thing..." He sighed. "Why? Why do you do this to your sister? Do you think it makes you better than her? To me it just makes you worse."
Adrienne saw defeat in his countenance and felt victory already. And it was sweet. "I do it because to see the look on her face when I walk away with you. To see her whispering worriedly to her friends over at the Gryffindor table this moment. To get her to realize I get everything she wants till she gives up and realizes she's not as great as she thinks she is. Oh, and for the record, I really don't care what you think of me," she said with some finality, like the end of a contract.
Calvin really felt like speaking his mind and spitting some venom back at Adrienne after experiencing the venom she just spat at him, but he knew that it would be fruitless. She was probably telling the truth when she said that she didn't care what he thought of her. It was good because the feeling was mutual - but the power she had was not mutual. He wouldn't let this ruin his friendship with Adelie, though. He'd find a way around it. He just frowned and let the conversation-come-argument lie. Retaliating would probably only make it worse. She'd won, plain and simple. It was then that the hope of a bright and enjoyable final year that had been revitalized on the train was once again crushed. It was going to be another tough year.
The rest of the feast was unremarkable. Nothing of note happened other than some kid on the Hufflepuff table fell off of his bench and spilt soup all over himself. Calvin didn't really eat anything other than a little bit of chicken and some bread, as, despite the fact he had been incredibly hungry for the past couple of hours, his conversation with Adrienne had completely turned his stomach. He just sat and waited for it all to be done with. After a while the Headmaster announced everyone was now free to leave the hall, noting that everyone should be in the dorm room within the next hour. That gave Calvin and his friends some time to talk, as he had agreed to before. He didn't really feel like talking right now, he didn't know what to say. Instead, as everyone was clearing out of the halls, he approached Zef. "I'm feeling kind of sick. Can you tell the others that I've gone back to my dorm?" He gave a weak smile before heading up to the Ravenclaw tower.
He instantly felt bad about skipping having some time with his friends but he just felt pissed off and some sleep would probably do him good. As he entered the common room he heard one of his fellow 7th years calling his name. He peered over and saw it was someone he shared a room with. "Mate, I'm just not feeling too good, think I'm going to go and get an early night." The guy laughed, as if Calvin was joking, but Calvin went up to the room nonetheless, changed and got in to bed. He would probably have disturbed sleep like every night and he doubted he'd get more than a couple of hours shut-eye, but he tried to drift off anyway.
