"Have you no conception of the dangers inherent in this virus?"

"Power calls to power, and sorrow to sorrow." He gave Fortunato the barest of smiles. "We have all lost something precious to us in this battle against horror. But still we must go on, go on and turn back the darkness. If we can.”: Dr Tachyon.

What would happen if super powered beings existed in the “real” world? Well you’d get something similar to the Wild Card Universe, a series of mosaic novels written by several different writers and collected and edited by George R.R. Martin (yes, THAT G.R.R. Martin) that revolve around a world where super powered beings exist. Originally based off a long-running roleplay (irony) run by Martin in his youth, the series has run for more than 2 decades with over 20 different books.
The series’ subject matter differs from traditional superhero comics of the time in that it was more “realistic” (again, irony). In the series, there are no “big superhero teams” or “supervillians”, at least not in the comic-established sense. Many times, these “supervillians” are part of criminal organisations such as the Mafia or extremists such as the Islamic Nur sect.
It is this Universe we will be exploring and making our own from a point in time. The established events after this point in time will be changed, reimagined or completely forgotten as we begin taking over this huge world.

Brief History of the Wild Card Event:
In 1946, an alien named Prince Tisianne (or Dr Tachyon as he is now known) landed on Earth the same day as a virus, engineered by the House IIkazam, was sent to the planet in order to evaluate the virus on a large scale test. The virus crashed on Earth and was hijacked by one Dr. Tod. Using the virus, Tod threatened to release it over New York City, not knowing the full effects of the virus on humans.
On Sept. 15 1946, the genetically engineered Xenovirus Takis-A, also known as the Wild Card Virus in later years, was released over New York City. It was then that full effects of the virus were witnessed. As the virus rained down upon the unsuspecting public below, the changes began to show.
Of the estimated 25,000 infected, 90% became “black queens”, dying in gruesome ways, melting, burning, exploding, while the remaining 10% mutated. Every death was different, sending the city into a panic. Bridges were closed, people urged to stay in their homes. As the death toll rose, a pattern emerged. While 9 out of the 10 survivors of the virus mutated, becoming hideously deformed “jokers”, the lucky remaining 1% were gifted with miraculous physical or mental powers, becoming “aces”.
Since “Wild Card Day”, Earth has changed dramatically, encountering alien civilisations, inter-dimensional beings and global disasters. Certain historical elements more or less followed a similar path, with some obvious changes of the inclusion of superhuman presence.

The virus can be identified using a blood test, even if that person is Latent. The virus does not affect animals or other aliens as it is genetically coded for Takis (and, as a result of the identical genetics between races, humans)

It is from this point in time (1986 for those who didn’t read the Timeline) that the normal timeline may/will diverge. Anyone taking over established characters must review their characters history. Anyone who is creating new characters should take these past events into account if they affect your character in anyway. I would ask that if you are creating a character based around a certain ability or deformity that you check and see if there isn’t already a highly established character that has your ability/deformity of choice. I say “highly” as in they have been given backstory and/or have been established. A list of different characters/power-based categories can be found here: Wild Card Characters

Now time for everyone’s favourite section- Da Rulez!

1] Have fun. We’re all here because we love writing and/or imagine intricate stories, settings and characters and, while I (and I assume many others) are open to constructive criticism, we’re not here to beat down others on their creations, we’re here to add to already rich and imaginative world. So have some fun with it. THAT’S AN ORDER!

2] If you’ve never read these books, that is alright. The whole point is that we’re starting anew from a point in time and constructing our own stories. However, 2 common themes all these books (and hopefully this RP) have are realism (what would happen if you put super powered beings in the “real” world) and graphic, gritty imagery and situations. What do I mean by that? 2 simple words: anal necrophilia. Yes. That actually happens in one book.
However, that will not be happening here or at least, not to that degree. Everyone will follow the sites rules regarding sexual content and graphic violence. Anything graphical should only be hinted at or faded to black in regards sex and the explicit language and violence should not be overused just for the “shock factor”.

3] Pick a character that you A) think you can develop or construct a character that you think you can get some decent stories out of B) have decently researched or put time into creating yourself. Don’t just pick one because their “powers are cool” or “they’re badass”. Think long term. Also don’t be afraid to pick a Nat or Deuce if you think you effectively develop a good story or character out of them. Also try and be realistic in your appearance for your character, particularly the Aces. Not all Aces are beautiful, stone-chiselled models, some can be just ordinary people with extraordinary powers.

4] Pick your powers/deformities wisely. Obviously I can’t tell someone how to play their characters but I would ask that if you are choosing certain abilities that you consider how they’ll affect your stories and your character’s life overall. I would ask that people limit their choices away from the god-like powers, time travel and so forth and if you do choose these powers, that you impose a weakness or limitation as to their usage. In saying that, don’t be afraid to use your imagination. This world contains humanoid androids, sexually-powered magicians, Shakespearian-dressed telepathic aliens and much, much more.

5] Everyone is allowed, at most, 2 characters at any one time. However, due to the rarity of Aces in the world, if you pick an Ace as your 1st character, then you will only have the choices of Jokers, Deuces or Nats. This also goes for ace-jokers. No one can have 2 Ace-style characters at one time. This is to keep things fair and balanced and to stop try and stop the entire RP from being filled with nothing but Aces. All other combinations are available, joker-joker, deuce-joker etc.

6] You may notice that the previous rule has the phrase “at any one time”. That is because no one’s character is above dying. However this will only happen IF the character’s player allows it. Other characters may simply just run out of steam story wise and be retired. Others may transcend the physical plane, travel back in time etc. Point is, is that characters in this will come and go.

7] No Godmoding or Metagaming to an extreme degree. For anyone unfamiliar with these terms, Metagaming is playing your character using/having knowledge that could only be obtained by either reading it in the OOC or by reading another poster’s entries. Big no-no. Godmoding, in this case, is trying over-exert too much control over situations or other characters. This also carries over to describing actions of other player’s characters in-game without their prior consent. A very big no-no.

As this is an Int Ch for the moment, there are bits missing, mostly about other important characters. This is mainly to prevent an overload of information. However, if you have a genuine interest in it, then I suggest reading the Wikia for any information you may want to find between now and when/if the OOC goes up and if you’re just interested in the overall premise, I highly recommend you find a copy of the 1st Wild Cards novel and read it.

Also you need not post up an actual filled CS just yet, this is merely to garner some interest and see how things follow from here.

And can I ask what the Bell Keeper's covenant is supposed to be, I've never heard of this...

It is one of the new Covenants in DSII. It allows me access to the spell Hidden Weapon and another couple of perks.....
Throwing my (Big) hat into the ring for a sorcerer

Name: Lordric
Gender: Male
Class: Sorcerer
Covenant: Bell Keepers
Appearance: The appearance of Lordric, Hollowed or not, is hidden beneath the long, crimson robes. When asked, he claims to have long forgotten when he got these garments or where. Whether that’s really true however….

Equipment: Lordric carries with him a normal catalyst for spells and a small Mail Breaker sword. He also carries around two books with him, one large unintelligible one and another smaller one, which he is often seen scribbling in. He currently knows these spells:
Cast Light
Soul Arrow
Hidden Weapon
Remedy
Dead Again (Hex)
Personality:
Lordric is arrogant, sarcastic and defeatist. He does not see the best qualities in Man, least of all himself. He is suspicious of new people, which has served him well so far considering anyone could turn on their colleagues at any moment. Lordric believes that his reading and writing keeps him sane, which is why at any point of rest, one will see him with his head buried in his books.
.....So I'll just kick back in the lobby I guess,

*opens a crappy mag*
Anybody? Nobody? Not even a whiff?

lol well Tony Stark is...busy...

Well Tony can take his time as long as the lobby has refreshments

Very nice post, Nightraider. Bishop knows where Fury is located, or no?

He knows where he'll be executed and what date but as of now, he has no idea where he is.

Not to break up the flow of the narrative, but the 1st Bishop intro is posted, after god knows how long. :P
Bishop stepped solemnly off the boat, nodding to the captain as he made his way down the busy dock. Most of the workers paid him no attention, while others merely chanced a glance. It wasn’t surprising. Most people wanted to get out of Cuba, almost no one ever wanted to be smuggled in. But that was exactly the situation Lucas Bishop found himself in. It didn’t bother him as much, finding himself in this strange land. Hell, it was all strange to him, the land, the people, the time, merely being able to walk where he wanted, do as he wanted. It was exhilarating. But he hadn’t lost sight of what was important, his mission. The Mission, and now that he was here, he felt something he didn’t think he’d feel. He felt calm.

Striding down the dock, Bishop felt the high Cuban sun beat down against his neck and face. He pulled open and pushed up the sleeves on his worn black-grey hoodie, revealing his black tank-top. He stopped for a moment, just a moment to take it all in. He felt his skin soaking up the sun’s rays and, more importantly, the solar energy being stored up in his system. He hadn’t used his powers much since arriving, not wanting to draw attention to himself or disrupt the natural flow of time by changing things too early. Not that it would matter soon. He was about to make the biggest impact on the time flow he could possibly make and he hoped to God, Osiris and Thor that it would shift everything for the better.

He made his way off the dock and into the streets of the city, his eyes wandering over everything they could see. The lights, the colours, the people. It was hard to believe that this would all be turned into a prison island for high level mutants by the Sentinels. According to the Elders, the natives had been shipped off to other countries or given free housing in the States in exchange for employment in the factories. The old images of those daunting buildings flared in Bishop’s mind’s eye, the red eyes in the distance of the huge behemoths. Then Bishop began wondering of his evaluation of the thoughts. They were old for him, but a possible future for those around them. They may even soon be nothing more than a figment of Bishop’s imagination, never to be experienced by anyone. Bishop smirked, despite the nature of the grim thoughts. Temporal causality messed with his head sometimes. He continued on toward his destination.

A short time later…..
Bishop stood at the end of the road, surveying the wreckage. The beachside house had been completely demolished, with police, firefighters and construction workers all present. Some of the local media was around, trying to get the scoop on what had happened. A younger officer was near Bishop, about a head smaller than the massive 6’11’’ mutant. He gingerly approached the suspicious officer.
“Perdone, ¿qué ha pasado aquí?” (Excuse me, what happened here?) Bishop had learned Spanish in the camps as a kid, seeing as he lived near the Latino quarter of the camp and many of his “childhood” friends had been Latinos.

“Fuga de gas. Eso es todo lo que estamos dispuestos a decir, señor.” (Gas leak. That's all we're willing to say, Sir.) The officer put his hand up and beckoned him away.

“El propietario?” (The owner?) Bishop asked, beginning to make his exit.

“Tony Stark.” The officer shrugged, indicating he did not know his whereabouts.

Bishop smiled a thank you and made his way back down the drive, his face now one of pure worry. He didn’t believe for one moment that it had been an accident. This was not supposed to have happened. In preparation for the jump back, Bishop had gone on a fact finding mission around the camp to find out all he could about the events of the past. One old man he’d found knew the details very well, knowing names, places, dates, everything Bishop needed. It was all too good to be true. When pressed as to how he knew, he’d merely waved away the questions, simply telling the younger mutant to trust him. He’d described the events leading up to the execution of Fury vividly, including where the Avengers and other heroes would meet before for the rescue. This house, Tony Stark’s house. But the old man had not said anything about there being an attack. Why wouldn’t he have? He’d been right about other events so far. What was different now?

It hit Bishop as he reached the main road. He was different. His presence in the past had shifted things just enough that things were beginning to occur slightly differently than the past had recorded. It was like he was a stone dropped in a still pool. Even though it was but one action, his jump back, it was enough to cause ripples along the timeline. That’s why he had stayed hidden until now. He couldn’t risk causing further changes until the lynch point, Fury’s death. He hurried into town, now on the trail of the hero, The Iron Man Tony Stark.

It didn’t take long to find out. While asking in a souvenir shop, he’d overheard a couple saying that the famous Tony Stark had come in and bought up their hotel to another vendor. They couldn’t believe it was really him. He casually asked them where it was as he was a big Stark fan. They pointed him to the large beachfront hotel and Bishop made a beeline for it. A few moments later, he stepped into the lobby area, the other tourists coming and going on their holiday, unconcerned by Bishop’s presence. A maître di stepped up to Bishop and politely quipped,

“Is there something I can do for you, Sir?”

Bishop sized up the smaller gentleman and was bemused at being called Sir twice in one day. He looked down at the smartly dressed man and urgently as he could, requested,

“I’d like to see Tony Stark, if he’s in. I’ve got a future investment that he may be interested in…”

Daytime Anguish
Downtown Queens
The screams of anguish and rage echoed throughout the apartment. The cheers of glee overpowered them at times as the anger boiled over from the torment and anguish. Deadpool leaned forward, relishing the torture of the victims as they screamed in agony. Deadpool grinned from ear to ear.

“Told you he wasn’t the Daddy! Jerry, Jerry, Jerry!”

Deadpool laid panned out on the couch, in nothing but his underwear, hip holster and mask, which was pulled up above his mouth so he could stuff another handful of cheeseballs into it, the orange dust covering the edges of his lips and the tips of his fingers. Some leftover orange crumbs covered the scarred chest of the Merc as the next set of guests on the daytime TV show stepped up.

*You claim to be the world’s best mercenary, yet here you are, watching daytime trash TV while we have a high paying job sitting in front of us, literally!*

A small stack of files sat on the coffee table, a couple of photos sticking out of the cardboard covers that showed people, places and strange looking equipment. The thickest lay at the bottom, several papers rifled through from being shifted through several times.

“Also one of the most dangerous, I mean S.H.I.E.L.D.? I need to focus, collect my thoughts….”

The self-argument came to an end as the apartment loft’s door opened wide and a figure stepped through into the loft. Years of intense training snapped into place as Deadpool drew his S&W from the holster at his hip, the barrel snapping to the target and the finger hovering over the trigger. The laser-point on the barrel’s end hovering over the entrant’s eye….or at least where the eye should be. The left patch covered the left eye area, the young girl stepped in to see the weapon pointed in her direction, only to sigh.

“D, didn’t I say that I would be back soon? I just went to get groceries.” She shifted her arms, the brown paper bags ruffling in her arms.

Deadpool shrugged, “One has to always be careful when you’re as dangerous as me, Al.” It would have sounded more impressive if his mouth was not spluttering chewed orange cheeseballs all over his semi-naked body as the handgun is slid back into its holster.

Al shook her head and marched into the kitchen area of the loft. Alexander Althea had known Deadpool for the past several months and had gotten used to some of his stranger quirks, she had to, considering he was giving her room and board in exchange for her services. Nothing sexual, Al would never sink that low, but Deadpool never seemed to show that kind of interest so she was content with the affiliation so far.

Al met Deadpool in a homeless shelter after the Merc had come recruiting, looking for his “Alfred” as he put it. None met Deadpool’s odd standards until Alexander stepped up. Wade told her if she could break down and reassemble the .45 ACP pistol, he’d take her in for free, chores included. Not only did she do just that, she did it in a very respectable time, under 5 minutes. This intrigued Deadpool and he took the young 20 year old into his loft apartment, informing her of her duties. She also didn’t ask why Deadpool wore his costume and he didn’t ask about her missing left eye.

It was then she began noticing Wade’s stranger quirks, such as taking to calling her “Blind Al”, despite the fact she had full vision in her right eye. When she finally asked him why, he merely shrugged and stated that “you remind me of someone I used to know.” Deadpool refused to comment further and, once when she’d pissed him off about it, he locked her in a room he called the “Box”, a room filled with sharp objects. She was thoroughly confused now, seeing as the room was lit and she could clearly see all of the obstacles.

Al sat the bags on the counter top and opened one of the overhead cabinets. A bunch of soft bags fell on Al’s head as she groaned, turning one of the bright bags over to read the front of the bag.

“Captian Carl’s CheesyBalls? How many did you buy, D?”

She answered her own question when she opened the other cabinets, finding more bags stuffed inside. She pressed her fingers into her eyes, calling out to Deadpool.

“D, I thought we discussed this. You bring in the money, I do the shopping and we don’t ask questions about what the other does.”

“But they were on sale! And we’ll be bringing in some big bucks soon.”

“What, the S.H.I.E.L.D. job?” Al bit her lip as she spoke too soon, realizing her slip.

“You’ve been reading my files again, Al? Didn’t we discuss that as well?”

“It was just sitting there wide open, you were out….. So it looks like it would be smart to do some of the other jobs first. Especially that HAMMER tech one……” She poked the conversation forward, hopping D would forget her infraction if he concentrated on the job.

Deadpool nodded in silent agreement. He’d been looking over the equipment that X wanted him to steal and he’s figured that taking some of the smaller companies would do first before going up against S.H.I.E.L.D. The HAMMER job looked the most promising, with the development of some new teleport tech that was still in the trial stages, giving the user only short range capabilities, but, with the layout to the Helicarrier in his possession from the mysterious voice on the other end of the phone, it would mean that none of the locked doors would be a problem. Deadpool stood up, the crumbs falling from his scarred chest as he struck a valiant pose for his one audience member.

“Time to go to work! Now, Al, fetch me my pants!”
