Personality: Rei is a person who largely lacks a sense of self, being unsure of who she really is or who she wants to be. For much of her life her personality has been molded around the expectations of others and how she perceives others would wish her to be. Because of this her personality would tend to vary from person to person, more outgoing with those who are quieter or more reserved with those who seek to be in control for example. Simply stated, the personality others would see is built upon a tightly woven fabric of lies and deception.
Behind the mask of expectations and ideals placed on her is a long brewing frustration and unease caused by the way she has lived her life since a young age. Though she may not realize it the constant facade she holds has begun to wear on both nerves and mind, a problem which has only begun to worsen as she grows older.
Background: Rei was the first child born into the Nozomi family who, at the time were an average, happy upper middle class family. When her mother learned she was pregnant with their daughter the parents agreed she would withdraw from work to take care of the soon to be new born they would be responsible for. Her father, a software designer was certainly well enough off to provide for the family and would do so gladly. The first two years after the birth of their child would be happy and about as smooth as things could be expected to go, but things began to grow rocky within the third year.
The problems began with the company the girls father worked for began to lose clients and profits from ever growing competition in the market. Her father soon began to worry about how he would provide for the family if things continued this way which began to create a bit of tension in the household due to mounting stress. Finally after months of struggling to keep up, Hosei Industries would be shut down leaving its workers jobless. The Nozomi family would then be left with only savings to live on for the time being. The father would begin frantically searching for new jobs while taking freelance work on the side while the mother would begin watching the children of friends and acquaintances in effort to scrape together what little funds they could.
However over the following months the families situation would only grow gradually worse. With tensions and worry piling atop eachother causing the two parents to begin fighting often. Eventually at the climax of the now stress addled relationship, the father would walk out, accusing his wife who still could not work due to the need to take care of their young daughter of merely leeching off his efforts. Rei's mother would begin looking for work of her own to support herself and her daughter but would struggle to find much of anything due to her years spent off the work force and not having funds to pay for her daughter to be taken care of while she would be away.
Soon the rent on their apartment would be too far gone and the mother and daughter would be forced to seek help from friends, often moving from house to house depending on whoever could spare a room for the night. This continued until Rei was old enough to enter schooling and her mother could search for work once more. However it soon became apparent that the girls mother was suffering from depression, once again making it difficult to find work. Instead the woman would spend much of her time in gambling, attempting to get ahead but inevitably digging the family further into poverty. She would end up in a minimum wage job after sometime and purchase a small run down apartment for the two but things would still be far from present.
As Rei grew up in this environment with little contact with her father many responsibilities unfit for a child would be placed on her by her mother. Cooking, cleaning, on top of school work would all be tasks she would have to deal with on her own. With her father remaining distant and her mother sank deep into depression the burden of pulling the family out from poverty would be placed squarely on the girls shoulders, even as impossible as such a thing was. Still she wanted to see her mother happy and proud and to perhaps even bring her father back so she would be the one to sacrifice, burying herself into study and taking small jobs from teachers or the parents of friends to help out, all while putting on the face of a responsible eager student.
Life would continue this way until Rei was around 11 years old when her mother would stumble home from one of her fairly frequent nights of gambling and drinking. While the scene had become normal, a few days later it would become apparent that it was not quite normal. She would learn that her mother was pregnant, the father since forgotten in a drunken daze. Despite barely being able to keep food on the table for herself and her eldest daughter, the second child would be born nine months later. This would cause Rei to further sink into her roll of striving to do what she could to pull the family up but she would now have to play the roll of the caring elder sister.
With each year Rei gained she would take on more responsibilities while putting on the face each person would most wish to see from her. A responsible diligent daughter for her mother, a supportive caring sibling for her younger sister, a fun and enthusiastic girl for acquaintances at school, a bright promising student for teachers and instructors. During her highschool years she would begin taking on part time jobs after school and would tend to be the one to attend things such as conferences and field trips for her younger sister when needed. She is currently enrolled in West Kokusai Highschool and holding two part time jobs, a convenience store during the week and a small book store on weekends.
