Where should the crew members assemble? Are we all going into the Hall of the Void to meet with the Keepers?
Renin looked at the bald, dark-skinned prisoner they were tasked with escorting, wondering what made her suitable for a trip into the Void. He did not care overly much if she saw him staring at her for a moment, though it may be difficult for her to discern any more than a pair of faint green pinpricks under his hood. Even at mid-day, Myar's sky remained grey, and its land clothed in shadows. One reason among many that he sought to leave this world. The ranger did not necessarily object to a criminal accompanying the mission--though many of his fellows scoffed at it and muttered under their breath to each other, sometimes well within Loria's range of hearing, Renin remained silent.

He and she were outsiders both in this place. He had been more fortunate than her, perhaps, but he did not believe himself to be inherently superior. People did things to survive on this planet. Renin had done things in his time, before he came to these mountains, and if these folk knew of the things he'd done then, perhaps they would've imprisoned him as well. He was thus not swift to judge the crimes of others. What he had more trouble wresting with was exactly why this particular criminal was suited above all others, or why any criminal was being chosen at all. Did she possess some extraordinary hidden talent--or was she so dangerous that the Conclave simply wanted her off-planet?

Maybe he would find out soon.

"My name is Renin. We'll be crewmates soon--what's your name?" he asked Loria.

After collecting the prisoner, Renin's group had been assigned to grab a scientist who was running past schedule. Some had grumbled that they didn't see the use of a biologist who was too inept to even arrive at a proper time, but if they found a world that was even remotely habitable, the expedition absolutely needed his skills, at almost any cost. The mere inconvenience of delaying the launch proceedings wasn't that much of a price to pay if he was as knowledgeable as he was supposed to be.
I plan to post tomorrow!
i am excited for this to begin
Ivas Gainworth

Height: 5'9"
Weight: 170
Age: 24
Race/Species: Human

Tier/Influence: 1 (self); Physically fit but otherwise unremarkable. Remarkably hard-headed, perhaps, to the extent that simply not quitting is a skill or ability.

Group(s): ??? (Native to Ecetopia, the magic planet)

Appearance:

Personality: Excitable and boisterous, Ivas never says no to a good adventure. Raised with tales of grand heroes as the sole respite in an otherwise dull existence, Ivas never wanted anything else but to become such a hero himself, and when he stumbled upon his magical sword he got his chance. Unfortunately, he's overly naive, not very bright, and lacks any clear purpose beyond "doing cool stuff." He is capable of genuine bravery and altruism if the opportunity presents itself, though whether this is due to a truly exceptional spirit or because he is simply too stupid to understand the risks that he takes, it's hard to say.

Items:
(3) Edge -- Ancient masterwork longsword; ornate golden grip, blade inscribed with runes, shining orange pommelstone. Where the handle meets the blade, the shape of a dragon's head is carven into it, its jaws closed around the first few inches of the blade. The crossguard takes the shape of a dragon's wings wrapping around the wielder's hand. The blade is nigh-indestructible, never rusts, and never loses its edge; Ivas chose this word, Edge, as its name mainly because it seemed too cool not to name, but he also couldn't think of anything better at the time (or anytime since, for that matter).

The sword is enchanted with ancient magics which Ivas doesn't understand, although he's learned how to use them. It is bonded to him as its only valid wielder; he can draw it through the air to his hand, even over significant distances and without eyesight of it, but if any other picks the weapon up it becomes extremely heavy, weighing far more than its size would suggest, and the blade dulls to the point that it is little more than a blunt slab of steel. While holding the sword, Ivas can alter its size and shape at will, as well as throw it like a javelin or a dagger with pinpoint accuracy, despite the fact that it obviously should not possess the aerodynamic qualities of either.

Ivas is able to draw on the memories of whatever strange spirit or other magic inhabits the sword, giving him martial skills far beyond what he would have on his own. He is also occasionally able to draw knowledge about other subjects from it, though this information comes haphazardly at best, as if through a barely remembered dream. If he loses the weapon, his fighting skills (and skills in general) are.... rather lacking. After all, there's little need to train properly when one can merely borrow the talents of another.

History: The Gainworth family owned a farm in the countryside where they made their living working the land. They were never rich and they were sometimes poor, with none of their number having much to their name in terms of talent or special abilities, but they had a strong work ethic and strong family bonds to see them through tough times. The farm's secluded and unremarkable location kept it safe from the wars and magical disasters that often occurred around cities or more mystically active regions, but it also made life there repetitive and dull.

Ivas loved his family, and he still does, but he knew that he needed to see something else in the world before he was too old and set in his ways to make the change. He set off with high hopes and a head filled with tales of legendary adventures, sure that he would immediately discover his hidden potential as the chosen one of some long forgotten prophecy, embark on a quest to slay a great dragon or topple an evil empire, and have a beautiful princess swooning into his bed afterwards. Instead, he found that the reality was rather less fanciful; a simple farm boy, who had no magic and didn't even know how to swing a sword, could only find work as a manual laborer. Ivas was back to the mundane existence that he had hated so much before, only now without his family to help him bear it!

In spite of this rude awakening, he didn't become bitter or jaded, instead bouncing between locations in search of any whisper or hint of some exciting quest or another that never ended up working out. Adventure only found him when he wasn't looking for it--on a job excavating ancient ruins for an archaeological expedition, the laborers tunneled into a forbidden crypt and awakened a cursed beast set to guard the sarcophagus within. While the rest panicked, Ivas leapt at the chance for glory, expertly dodging around the monster to push open the sarcophagus and take the enchanted sword held by the corpse within (in reality, the monster kicked the lid aside as it jumped off the coffin as a springboard, and Ivas was only able to pass because it went after his meatier companions first).

Everyone else in the group was slaughtered horribly, but dumb luck was on Ivas's side. The sword, imbued with the lingering spirit of the warrior-king, was meant to pass on to whatever warrior was strong enough to defeat its guardian and claim its might.... but the ancient pharaoh had never considered that someone might get to it without actually killing its guardian, and so the sword had been made to bond with the first person to touch it, who happened to be Ivas. Unable to do any more than watch in exasperation from the afterlife, the pharaoh's spirit sighed in ethereal frustration as the simple farm boy used the sword's incredible powers to effortlessly eviscerate the monster, cheating his way through the sacred trial without ever properly understanding what had happened.

Ivas didn't need to know any of those pesky details anyways. He had finally earned his legacy as a great hero, and with Edge at his side, adventure would be his!

Seems pretty good my dude. Plenty for me to work with between survivors guilt and sort-of PTSD.

Be aware that an outsider being let into the hermit communities would be a pretty big deal, so that may have some contribution on your characters routine and socual status. You may have even helped the ranging party that recovered the ship, which would make you privy to a thing or two early. To that end, would you be able to expand on why your character was put forward for the Path of the Void? A few ideas might be: their prowess in hostile enviorments and loyalty to kin may have made them an easy pick for the hand of his community, or maybe the hand wanted to just get rid of an "outsider".

I imagine he still feels like an outsider to an extent which informs his tendency for social isolation. This would in turn be part of his motivation to volunteer for the mission, he doesn't have a family or any close relations that he is parting with, and he knows there are some who would be happy to see him gone. Plus there is part of him that would legitimately rather go into space, where he might find something better, than to go into the wastes again.
Alrighty, posted my char. Hope the submission looks good.
Character name:
Renin of the Rangers

Character age:
27

Physical information:

Tall and reed-like, Renin is as swift as a hawk, with senses nearly as keen, or so it is said. However, like the hollow-boned bird, he is fragile if trouble catches up to him. He relies on his speed, agility and endurance, as well as his sharp scouting skills, to keep him out of trouble. If he does find himself in a physical confrontation, he is overpowered by mostly anything more dangerous than the average human, although he does carry a hunting knife as a last resort. Renin prefers to use his trusty composite bow or a long-range rifle before things can get close enough for that.

Though he would be called beautiful in another place, in another time, in Myar Renin prefers to hide his pristine features beneath his hood--some consider him un-manly, even cowardly, for his ability to keep himself whole and unmarred despite numerous expeditions into the wastes. More than one fellow ranger resents him for the times when they had to confront threats more directly while Renin was able to flee or keep his distance and thus avoid injury. Yet there is also a grudging acknowledgment that he is a solid addition to any ranging party.

Psychological information:
Renin is known to be solitary and withdrawn, not necessarily anti-social, but rarely seeking out more company than comes to him by circumstance. He is calm, ruthless, and calculated in the field.... so long as the situation remains under control. The things he has seen in the wastes have stuck with him, and while they remain suppressed normally, extreme scenarios can bring those memories to the fore and cause Renin to panic, which usually results in him fleeing with abandon. Fortunately for him, all such incidents so far have been horror scenes from which none could blame him for escaping from, so he has never been disciplined for merely preserving his own life, but he lives with survivor's guilt all the same.

Biography:
Renin came to the hermit communities five years ago, remaining tight-lipped about his background other than to simply say that he was "from the wastes," that he had "seen things," and that he "was a survivor." He met and assisted a ranging party who were far from the mountains and running out of food, showing them how to flush out scrabble-legged waste moles to live on until they could make it back home. In exchange for his aid and in recognition of his talents, he was granted entrance and citizenship, upon which he immediately undertook the Path of the Ranger to which he was so clearly suited. Though he is not a great leader or a mighty warrior, Renin has always been a loyal ranger, and none have yet had any reason to doubt him despite his origins as an outsider.

Renin still feels like an outsider to an extent which informs his tendency for social isolation. This was in turn be part of his motivation to volunteer for the mission, as he doesn't have a family or any close relations that he is parting with, and he knows there are some who would be happy to see him gone. Plus there is part of him that would legitimately rather go into space, where he might find something better, than to go into the wastes again.

Sure. If we get enough interest I'll tag you in the OOC once it comes up.

To answer your questions:

1. I'm planning for some vague fantasy elements, yeah. Magic "exists" but is really vague and abstract, to the style of Game of Thrones even. For example, the Lorekeepers are mages. I'm currently kicking around a "Voidtouched" concept that's effectively when someone goes into space and between them leaving and coming back, something happened to give them supposed visions, make their eyes a sheer black, and some other traits. The lorekeepers would all be voidtouched who didn't go insane. If it interests you, you're definitely welcome to play one.

2. Myar itself is a desolate wasteland below the mountains. More or less on the money with Fallout, if not more desolate and unforgiving. The mountains are the most hospitable places on the planet, hence why the hermit communities have set up and walled up there. It'll likely be a profession among the mountain hermit communities to explore beyond the walls, Path of the Ranger or something like that. It'll be Rangers who found the new ship.

3. Definitely multiple planets, yeah, and I'll admit they'll be made up as we go lmao. What'll be there, though.. who knows? Spooky cataclysms dude.

Great, I like the sounds of this. I think it's a good thing to make up lore as we go along, that's part of the fun. Is any of this lore pre-existing? If not, maybe we can make a brief catalogue in the OOC. After the RP gets off the ground, of course.

Also, please ignore Dead and badguy. I'll PM a mod about them shortly.

They ain't bothering me any <__>

I'm obviously quite new to the site so I'm not familiar with the culture here yet--I guess posts like theirs are considered spam?
