I definitely like him! But he’s missing something. ;) Read the OOC again.

With these edits in place, Chris is good to go.

Only 2 more character spots left, guys.

You’ve been working with me on this in private so you know that it’s approved. Just keep in mind I do still have reservations about some of her powerset and reserve the right to nerf or defeat her at any point I think something could be getting out of hand.

@ProPro
hey look it's edited woo

Addressed this in the Discord server.

Overall a great application, with just a few minor issues. A single sentence appearance isn’t enough detail. Also the other section is missing an important detail I’ve hidden in the OOC to make sure people are paying attention.

hey look i did it i posted in the ooc woo

It’s fun to see Carnation again. That said, this world and the world of Hellpact are very different, and her backstory needs to reflect that. Just carrying her over as she was and adding the fighting style section doesn’t make her a viable character. Her magic powers would need to be showcased in her special and supers. Things like the taking of souls and whatnot could happen, but it’ll need to be as a super art (and survivable, so it only takes the soul of the target dies). Otherwise, it’s not something she’ll be able to do. In Hellpact spirits and demons operated very specifically, but this world is more open. Actual Loki or Norse mythology wasn’t a dealer in souls, not all that bad a guy (setting aside the Ragnarok story, which was only believed by one subset of the Norse and adopted by Christians to showcase a “Satan figure” to the Norse to help with conversions). His trickery was, usually, mostly benign and used to teach the lesson that “sometimes shit just happens.” If you want to have Carnation as his champion and channel him, you’ll probably want to make her less murder-happy. So to make her viable, you’ll need to edit her history, make sure all abilities described in her history match her techniques, and possibly refine the champion aspect.

Also, her current super art as is, needs to be changed. A permanent summon with its own health bar isn’t feasible, as a super art should only function for a single post of combat. Change that bit and it’s a fine super art.
Edited in a link to the discord server.

Introduction

Do you like fighting? Do you like old school arcade games? Do you like magic powers, cyborgs, and throwing fireballs as a martial art? Then look no further. Fighting King is inspired by both old school beat’em ups a la Final Fight or Double Dragon, and by classic fighting games such as Street Fighter and Tekken. In this game you’ll take the role of a fighter of fame (or perhaps infamy) in whatever styling you like as you beat down punks and rival fighters. Want to unleash waves of chi as a Ryu/Ken clone? Go for it. Terrify the competition as a member of the undead? You’ve got it. Mow down your enemies with the superior firepower of a cyborg/android? The option is open to you. What about serving some old school street justice with nothing but your wits and your fists? Well of course! We’ll be looking for 4-6 players who will more or less form a team starting out, but there will be plenty of branching out once we get started.

Setting

While this game is inspired by classic beat’em ups and arcade fighters, it does not take place in any of their universes. Rather, this world is one where elements of any of these games could appear, but is itself an original creation. From a glance it appears to be indistinguishable from our own world: perfectly normal and mundane. However, once you go through it with a fine tooth comb, you’ll start to see more elements of fantasy and sci-fi. Fighters capable of manipulating their chi for specialized techniques. Magical witches and sorcerers. Psychics. Mutants. Scientists capable of creating androids, or fusing flesh with metal to make cybernetic weapons. Zombies, vampires, and whatever else have you. These things do exist in the world, and they are known to exist, but they are rare enough that nobody expects to actually run into this sort of thing in their lifetime. As far as NPCs are concerned, most will be normal humans, while every once in a while you’ll encounter one of the more off the wall aspects of the world. But as far as the players go, well, feel free to get as creative and crazy (or mundane) as you want.

Story

The game begins in the large city of New Carona, Maryland, USA. The street gangs run this town. They know it, the cops know it, everybody knows it. You don’t make a living in this city without giving someone else a cut to make sure your doors get to stay open, and not blasted off the hinges. One woman has had enough. Eve Roulette, wealthy business mogul and former underground fighting champion, has returned to her hometown with a mission. If the police can’t do anything about the thugs in the streets, then she will. To that end, Roulette has her people track down multiple fighters from around the world, the player characters, and offers them a job to clean up the streets the good old fashioned way. For whatever reason, be it the money, the challenge, a sense of morality, or whatever it may be, you’ve accepted the proposal and made your way to New Carona. From there the story will branch out, open some new paths and options, but at the start of things you’re here to kick butt and take names.

Gameplay

In keeping with the inspiration theme, gameplay will largely be among three distinct formats: Standard roleplay, crowd battles, and ring battles. At the end of each of these scenarios, you’ll get to earn Exp, which can be used to improve your character!

Standard Roleplay: Basically the normal thing you do everywhere all the time in all other RPs. This covers basic actions, dialogue, interactions, etc. Basically everything that’s going on when you aren’t fighting. But this is a fighter, so of course the focus is more on the next two.

Crowd Battles: These are the sections inspired by the beat’em ups like your Double Dragon, your Turtles in Time, etc. The best way to describe these segments would be “beating up waves of mooks.” When you’ve got to give a large crowd a beat down as you make your way toward your next goal, I as the GM will describe the general makeup of the crowd assaulting you, including weapons, tactics, etc., and you’re free to go ham on them. Most of the time they’ll consist of waves of inconsequential fighters who pose little threat to you, though occasionally a “mini-boss” will appear that puts up more of a fight. During Crowd Battles, you’re free to control the actions of your opponents and the world around you to really put on a stylish, longer post showing off just how cool and awesome a fighter you are.

Ring Battles: Despite the name, Ring Battles usually won’t occur in an actual ring (though they might!). These engage as soon as you meet with a dangerous opponent, a fighter of your own caliber, or at least in the same league as you. These are your 1v1s, or your tag team fights, inspired by classic fighting games like Street Fighter and Fatal Fury. These tough cookies aren’t getting tossed around like rag dolls and definitely pose a threat. During a ring battle, you cannot control your opponents or the world, that is exclusively my realm as the GM to determine how effective your attacks are on them, and vice versa. Also during a Ring Battle, you are limited to only 1 use of a Super Art, and 3 uses of a Special Technique, total.

Exp Costs:
  • New Fighting Style (comes with 3 Special Techniques, 1 Super Art, and 2 Weaknesses) - 20 Exp
  • New Skill - 3 Exp
  • New Special Technique - 5 Exp
  • New Super Art - 10 Exp
  • Up Max Use of S. Technique/Fight - 4 Exp
  • Up Max Use of S. Art/Fight - 8 Exp

Rules and Expectations

Alright, so let’s be real here. We all know the important rules, both set down by the Guild and just as common courtesy. So I’m not going to bother listing those sorts of things out. What I will do, is just set my expectations of players in this game, and let you know what you can expect from me. This game was literally created on a whim from a brief moment of inspiration in a morning daydream, and I do have other games I’m more focused on. Because of that, this will be a more lax game in terms of progression and posting speed. Normally I have a one post a week minimum in games I run, but not this time. While I would prefer that sort of pace, especially with the combat areas where things don’t need to be all that detailed or dramatic, this’ll be more of a “post at your convenience” and I’ll update it as I have free time, when I feel appropriate. If you haven’t posted by then, you may run the risk of getting left behind, but there won’t usually be any major consequences to it. In the other section of your CS list your favorite classic arcade game so I know you’ve been paying attention. Now, I’m only looking for 4-6 players for this game. I might expand that to be a larger group at a later time, but I’m not sure that’ll ever really be necessary. Each player only gets 1 character, so make them count. Themes can definitely get to be 18+, but in the spirit of the source material let’s try to keep swearing to be mostly minor and avoid anything overtly sexual. If things do go that way for one reason or another, fade to black or PMs please. All in all, as you can see from things this will be a pretty casual experience, which I feel is best when the main draw is all about knocking heads and kicking butt.

For everyone interested, I have an ongoing Discord server for all my games and general friend community. If you want to join it for this game, follow this link and just tell whoever is online at the time that you're there for Fighting King: discord.gg/SMaaC6p

I'm in the process of getting the OOC ready and ironing out some of the specific details. Feel free to join the discussion.
@ProPro Before I get started I wanted to know how wacky or fantastical the characters/rp will be? Like will the rp be like Final Fight? I wanted to make a grounded straight woman type character since you brought up TMNT.

It'll be mostly grounded in terms of the world around you with the occasional cyborg or mutant (like Blanka) or sorcerer coming out of the woodworks once in a while. That's just the world, however, as the players are welcome to go just about as balls to the wall as they like. Basically, all kinds of wacky and over the top things exist in the world, and they're known to exist, but they're rare/uncommon enough that at a glance it looks the same as our own world. That answer your question?
